Blackburn Rovers confirm Nelsen release

Blackburn Rovers have confirmed in a statement that Ryan Nelsen was released from his contract at the club last night.

Nelsen is now a free agent and will complete a deal to join Tottenham Hotspur after agreeing a six-month contract with the option for a further year.

The Rovers statement said: "Blackburn Rovers can confirm that club captain Ryan Nelsen was released last night after the player and club agreed the termination of the New Zealand defender's contract."

This was all about getting his wages off the books. Unlikely he'd ever hit the heights again at his age and with his tendency to knee injuries so for me not it was not bad business. We are clearly building a younger squad and if we can keep playing like we have in 4 of the last 5 games we will go up the league

A brilliant Blackburn servant Ryan, thanks for the good times, venkys out, I think kean himself is frustrated with the owners but obviously wont say anything, since boxing day the performances have been generally good, a must win tonight v a weakened Newcastle team,Samba if you somehow manage to read this comment supporters have been lied to by the owners as well but Blackburn fans will be spending their hard earned cash going to support the team and to help pay you a wage per week we wont earn in a year so stop your moaning and get to work and wear that blue and white shirt with pride.art et labore

Nelson has been a great player and ambassador for Rovers and I'm sad at the way he has been forced out of the club.

I would have thought his experience and influence would have been invaluable at this time when we are fighting a relegation battle.

Let's just hope that Samba can concentrate on his football now till the end of the season before he requests another transfer!

I dont understand what everyone is going on about here. As lets face it we all support Blackburn Rovers right? Ok we are going through a pooh time at the moment but how can you blame Kean for it all you cant at all. Look at the facts if some one offered you a premier leauge job wouldnt you say yes??? Well i know i would and yeah he did. The point is that he is a yes man for the Venkys it doesnt matter who we get they will always be a yes person to them. I dont get why we have kept Samba though as i dont think he will play again for us. All im saying is i want Venkeys out as much as the next person. But lets get behind Kean and the team. As in my eyes the players want to play for Kean but not for Venkys. Its a bad situation but lets just get behind the team. Look forward to your views

I do, however, feel that the time is right for Ryan to seek a new challenge as we can't keep injury prone players on what is a shrinking wage bill. I have no issue with that, in theory, just hope he got the praise he deserved when he left.

Would appear to me as though no a clueless manager when they see one. All of the experienced, senior players leaving/wanting to leave is not a good sign, with big Sam and Hughes players would never had said or done such things as now, they put their bodies on the line and conducted themselves in a professional manner. If we can stay up this year what the hell will happen in the summer I dread to think, I can't see samba, hoilett, nzonzi, robbo sticking around.

I would assume that as this was the name various players were texting to Samba after he handed in a transfer request during a relegation battle; the name was used somewhat tongue in cheek about Nelsen wanting his contract terminated during the same relegation battle. Just a guess though!

Absolute disgrace that you have to hide away in India and let Kean take all the flack. You deserve everything the Blackburn fans throw at you. Wonder if I will see you at the emirates stadium. I understand why he has left, it is another indication of the Rovers determination to reduce the wages bill. He may well have had a clause for a further contract if he had played.
But, I have to ask, why have we been repeatedly given the nonsence that he was injured and had broken down in training anf needed to go home to New Zealand? Why tell less than the truth, nobody would have bothered and at least we would have had a chance to say goodbye to a really outstanding man and wonderful player and representative of the club.
I for one will be sa to have missed the oportunity to say goodbye to him at his last apperance as we did for Emerton

Nelson injury prone, done a great job but past his best

Andrews goes because he is a target for the boo boys and can't be played.

Salgado is the worst full back in the premiership

Roberts, strong personality but doesn't score goals, another older player off the wage bill

Diouf was the most irritating player to both sets of fans, very glad to see the back of him.

Formica shows signs of being a good player but has missed some crucial chances, 3.5 million would have been good business

Robinson, see his interview on sky after the fulham game, sounded 100% behind the manager

Samba can't blame him, disappointed with the owners like the rest of us.

Hoillet looks like making a top player, not ready yet to move to a top team.

Looks like the manager was also misinformed about the Rovers, in the circumstances last 5 matches have been a minor miracle.

How will Sam cope with his 5-1 thrashing at Ipswich!

Ryan has been a terrific Blackburn Rover and is a huge asset for which ever team he plays for; he is also a credit to his country. Ryan has always played football the way it should be played, hard but fair and it is his presence in the New Zealand National Side which is one of the reasons they did do well in the last World Cup (unlike England).I think he is a terrific player and person and he would always be in my line up. Although I am very sad to see him leave; I wish Ryan the very best for the future and I am sure you will he will be an excellent acquisition for Spurs as Brad is.

A bolt from the blue. And what a curt and clinical statement. No reason, no tribute, no acknowledgement to a fantastic player and servant to this club. An insult.

Venky’s, Kean, ceo Paul Hunt, sporting director whatever-your-name – EXPLAIN.

Without a true explanation, we can only assume it was to get him off the wage bill. What a way to go after 5+ years as a model player at Ewood. A true gentleman, a born leader and a legend who will long be remembered. To be so cynically tipped overboard!

Was the termination mutual because of injury or was he terminated? Is he injured or is he not?

Why would Spurs jump in and sign him – and how did they know this was going to happen on deadline day? I would question that it is to play him. Do they want to use him as a defensive coach? Or is it to unlock the door to Samba?

Harry’s no fool. He says: “He’ll be good to have around.”

So he would. We can’t defend – no clean sheets in 25-ish matches. Why not keep him on as defensive coach? He is happy and was settled here and I am sure he would have jumped at that.

Hopefully some of these questions will be answered when Andy Cryer speaks to Ryan – though it does not appear that he has spoken to him today. Can’t think why not.

Realistically it may be that he has, sadly, come to the end of his playing days. But what a way for it to end. Thanks for the memory Ryan. And good luck.

Model pro, sad to see him go.
Not sure why people are surprised. ll of these players have been touted around for quite a while now and its driven from the balance sheet reduction exercise (managed by Karen Silk - hatchet girl?).
Anyone can do this, it does not take any skill to reduce a age bill.
What does take skill is reducing the bill whilst retaining capability, this is something the clowns that own us are totally inept at.
As for their 'style' or lack of. It is nothing more than I would expect from them - they have none.
It has come to something when the support are genuinely ashamed of admitting it is BRFC we support. That for me is the absolute pits.

No doubt about that. Most fans have accepted that Solgado & Roberts couldn't play due to contracts being extended. Nelson had the same sort of clause, but the fans would have gone mad had this been made common knowledge with Nelson.

Had he played again, it would have cost the club more big wages and a fee. The reason Spurs have signed him, is they know he is still fit enough to play and for no fee is is a no brainer.

Once again the fans have been sold up the river. I cast iron guarantee Nelson will play at least another season in the premier league.

Are the powers that be letting good players go to save money, and then get loan players in who aren't half as good. IT STINKS!!!
On another topic - why do Rovers play in black & yellow away from home when there is no clash of colours with their opponents?

I would be interested in a reply to that.
