Blackburn Rovers defender believes in late play-off push
12:00pm Friday 1st February 2013 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
SCOTT Dann insists anything other than believing in Blackburn Rovers’ late Championship play-off push would be “wrong” after admitting they can’t afford to waste a single point.
Rovers’ centre back helped boss Michael Appleton to his first victory with a wonder strike in Saturday’s FA Cup win at Derby and now knows the importance of a winning run in the league.
With relegation favourites Bristol City up next at Ewood Park, followed by Ipswich Town, Rovers will know it is a case of now or never with regards launching their play-off challenge.
Appleton’s men have already lost six home league games this season, leaving them 15th in the Championship, and Dann knows that has to change.
He said: “We are 10 points off the play-offs but you never know in this league. That is what we will be aiming for but in the next couple of games we have to be picking up maximum points.
“If we are to have any chance of getting in the play-offs, every game and every three points is going to be valuable. We can’t go out and not be ready, we have to go out on the front foot and try and get the three points every game.
“It is a big ask but it is not undoable. We have to be striving to do that and if we were not we would be wrong.”
After a dismal defeat against Charlton in his first match as Rovers boss, Appleton has overseen encouraging performances against Brighton and Derby.
Dann believes the trouncing of the Rams could be a sign of things to come, but only if the work rate shown in recent matches continues.
“We have to carry it on,” he said. “It is a great win but that has gone now, we have to concentrate on the next game.
“We need to make sure we keep that energy and work rate up. If we work as hard as we did today we will start picking up more results.
“If we work hard as a team and work for each other more wins will come. We have got the quality and probably one of the better teams in the league in terms of quality but it is a tough league to get out of.
“We found that in the first half of the season and we need more points.”
Meanwhile left winger Markus Olsson is relishing the last few months of the campaign as he looks to continue the form he showed at Pride Park on Saturday, where he played in tandem with his brother Martin down the left hand side.
The Swede has struggled with injury this campaign but, now back to full fitness, he is determined to finally establish himself as a regular.
He said: “I was out a while, came back and had a good run and then was out again with injury.
“I am feeling good now, training and since the new gaffer has come the type of football he wants to play leaves me happy every day.
“I started well this season and mentally it has been difficult at times.
“When I got into the side last game I wanted to show I want to be in the team every week.
“I have to show the gaffer I want to play. He is telling me ‘be hungry, show energy’ and I am that type of player anyway.
“I am an energy player and when I focus 100 per cent I play well. That is what I am trying to do.
“We have new players and the competition is more than ever. Everybody wants to play and it feels like we can build from the last game.
“Everybody needs to be on their toes. Nobody can be comfortable and the main thing is getting everyone on their toes.”

Before we released Vukcevic and loaned Rosado, Formica and Rochina i though we had a outside chance under Appleton.
Now they have been allowed to go without so much as a replacement being signed i think our season is doomed to favour.
It could very well cost us Jordan Rhodes at the end of the season.

After the latest transfer window, we are short in quite a few areas. And I don't feel we yet have an identity as a team.
Maybe another year in the champ under a settled manager might actually be better in the long term.
I actually think its a decent league and from the point of view of pure spectacle, it's really not bad. We just need some more consistency so we know roughly what we'll get to see week in week out

The squad is not good enough, and as we have signed absolutely no one in the Jan window, a mid table finish is what we realistically will get

Als we in de play-offs - dan ben ik een Nederlander!
no chance! - i know that our players have to stay positive and believe - but does any supporter genuinely think we can make the play-offs? think if we had got some reinforcements last night we may have stood an outside chance with a strong wind behind us - but the squad - - as appleton has said himself is unbalanced a chelsea loanee for a month and a young everton striker does not solve the imbalance.
and the prospect of promotion with the current squad, frightens me
en het vooruitzicht van promotie met de huidige ploeg maakt me bang

To add, these 4 players playing 1 team, their passing is very good, they would have passed the ball round for fun, so they dont need to chase back as much (although I believe they do), players like Lowe/Murphy who would play behind them, are the ones who give the ball away and break up their style of play.
These 4 players are Barca type players, if Barca has Lowe and Murphy as their holding players, they would not function either.

Not really that interested in these stories want to know the truth about last night. My guess is whomever was doing all the paperwork last night his main instruction was to do all the paperwork for the people leaving 1st, leave the incoming players till last and hey presto we are now extremely lightweight. the 2 supposed players whom where going to sign would have give us much needed pace and skill and now we are left with nothng!!!!

As for the transfer fiasco, the departures of Formica, Rochina, Rosado and Vucevic just confirm to me that Appleton feels distinctly uncomfortable in the company of quality players and is much more at home surrounding himself with mediocre journeymen.
On the wider front, we all acknowledge that we needed to offload players during the transfer window but to let the brightest and best go, whilst retaining Shebby's nomarks says as much about Appleton and Shaw as we probably need to know.
On a brighter note, its look like being a nice day tomorrow so I will be on the golf course instead of the Ewood Assylum.
p.s. I am not depriving the club of income as I have a season ticket.

I agree with a fellow fan surely by now the LET should have asked the press spokesperson at Ewood what happened to both transfer targets and was it conditional on reducing our wage bill with Robinson and Givet syaying put?

They must of agreed the fee and signed that off before the players travelled up the M6! Late paperwork...maybe just left it to late!

if Andy Cryers tweet is to be believed one was either asking for or being offered £4.5 million for a three and a half year contract.
As I said on the other thread, nobody died last night but "tragedy" or "f*ck up"? come on guys get real.
Most clubs didn't sign anyone.
In the cold light of day we offloaded some bit part players who helped get us relegated last season and who haven't exactly set the Championship alight this season have they?
We have at least two other player we need to get off the books, Robbo is hanging on for his contract (I don't blame him) and Givet has been sulking all season because he had to take a pay cut.
Both appear to be on more at Rovers than they can get anywhere else, that's why they won't leave.
Now thinking about it who actually signed them up?

Maybe you can join him seeing you are so keen to use your bum also...especially as it is not relegation but the play-offs that are the most realistic and genuine prospect for the Rovers. The team looks revitalized under MA now that he is getting the team/squad sorted out. The two players who didn't get signed last night (due to an admin screw-up) will both be joining on loan next week so hardly a tragedy is it Stone.
Too many people are too quick to throw stones (or snowballs) at every little thing that happens, and which happen at every club. Loads of similar stories from other clubs on last nights silly season. Time they did away with the Jan window anyway, as it serves no real purpose.

What they simply need is out and out commitement from all players.....hoping Appleton as made it very clear that those that don,nt turn up on a Saturday with 100% determined effort are out......why was Dunn not off loaded, I ask....well, the answer to that is no club would be interested in his type, that bleed the club for all they can get (no matter what his history was...should never have been given a hree years contract two years ago).
Another as-been not up to the mark and will hang on to what they can get out of the club.....not good enough simply, not like Ryan Nelson who could at least make a go of it elsewhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let see these player show their metal on the Park and for them to only be heard after the season if they ever achieve anything for the club.

Just as some question the sanity of trying to keep hold of deadwood players, so should we question the idiocy of expecting fairweather fans to come back unless we get back into the premiership. I no longer care that the stands are half-empty on matchdays and doubt many that attend lose sleep over it either.
Play-offs should be every players aim, but as has been said here, its not a realistic expectation and MA should be looking to improve performances rather than promotion.
Bristol today, should be a telling match whether MA's influences have been stamped on the team or not. losing the VUK hit hard, he was s class act and would have gone on to be a Rover great I reckon, but it seemed blatantly obvious that he didn't fit into MA's style of play so not surprising he's gone, same as Rochina.
3 points and nothing else Appy. its a rare sunny day in Blackburn and looking forward to a great day at the park.

As for those people saying that they don't care what Dann has to say, they just want to know what happened on Thursday night, why bother reading an article that clearly states its content in the heading? I'm sure Cryer has asked what happened Thursday night but he can't write anything if the club won't tell him anything.
Personally, I'm glad that Dann and the boys are adopting a positive attitude or there'd be no point in them turning up. Some people should learn to take the positives when they can as they've not been too frequent over the last two years.
