Rovers boss in call to get tough
7:45am Monday 21st January 2013 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
A FRUSTRATED Michael Appleton has demanded more “bravery” and “commitment” from his Blackburn Rovers side – after challenging them to cope with the Ewood Park factor.
Appleton’s first game in charge of Rovers ended in a 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, leaving him to question his players’ mentality when playing in front of an expectant home crowd.
The Ewood atmosphere was not helped by the presence of owners Venky’s, with co-owner Anuradha Desai making just her second visit, who received a hostile welcome.
Sections of Rovers supporters chanted for “Venky’s out” for large parts before the family left 25 minutes before the end.
Appleton described the atmosphere as “strange” but insists his players have to be professional enough to cope.
He said: “It was strange. I think we are going to have to get used to creating our own atmosphere. That was the message I was saying to the players.
“There are players in there capable of lifting things. I am going to be looking to some of the experienced players in the coming weeks to bring a few of the younger players on.
“You have to be brave. I could go on that pitch and my pass percentage could have been around the 90 per cent mark but all I probably would have done is go square and backwards to make that happen.
“You have to be brave to move the ball forward quickly and limit our touches on the ball. It is always an indication when someone is taking too many touches on the ball that they are trying to chase their form or chase a poor decision they have made previously.
“Without a shadow of a doubt it is about mentality.”
A crowd of 13,647 was quiet for large spells on Saturday as Rovers struggled to get them off their seats.
And, with the final whistle greeted by jeers, Appleton has stressed the importance of the players taking responsibility.
He said: “I am sure the supporters just want to see a committed performance from the players, they huffed and puffed but I’m not sure how committed they were when they conceded the second goal, which is disappointing.
“Frustrated is the word I would use more than anything. I certainly expected more. I think the atmosphere in the stadium was a strange one. So they have to deal with that.
“They are certainly a big fish in a smaller pond to what they were in last year. There is added pressure that goes with that, they have to deal with and they are going to have to cope with it.
“They have three home games in quick succession and it is going to be a challenge for them, it is going to be a challenge for everyone.”

At least he sounds like he is shipping some out and preparing to bring in some new (much needed) fresh faces.

A gut that does not want the day to day running of a club but still wants to be involved and has the experience to help you , you have worked under good managers before ,and nearly all older guys ,the older guy the Fergusons, Wengers, Hodgsons ,Benitez,Jol, Redknapps, are all working but there is tons of older guys you could bring in that have a wealth of untapped experience on man management ,helping you get the best out of what you have, and the older guys do have football nous.
You`re 37 a young manager and lets be very honest with very little experience at management , you would still be the manager the older guy would be your assistant /advisor.
YOU do not need any more management nearly same age as the players.

If they wanted to give the crowd a lift then they should have shown the footage of mrs d's husband getting a snowball in the mush on the big screen. That certainly gave me a lift!

I have been saying for ages now, some of these players are not committed and are going through the motions, and they need to be sold. They are like a cancer on the field. You should not be giving up against a mediocre side like Charlton when 2-1 down at home.

Dreadful display on Saturday. Atmosphere irrelevent.
His substitutions were garbage, MGP when we needed some bite and threat up front.
Still I shall continue to hope he may just be able to turn us around, but I doubt it.

The first provincial team to win the Association Cup, in 1883, beating the Old Etonians 2 - 1, after an extra half hour, Mr. T. Hacking, who kept goal for them in that celebrated contest, again donned the jersey at Ewood Park in March, 1892, giving an exhibition that was a revelation to those who had not previously seen him in action.
At one time football partisans whose real zeal outran their discretion were in the habit of relieving their feelings bu pelting opponents with stones and mud. It was great sport while it lasted, though those foolish enough to indulge in it had scant regard for the trouble it might cause. For example, when Burnley were here in December, 1892, they complained of the liveliness of their journey to the railway station. They had lost an exciting match by 2-0. In the last few minutes the referee had found it necessary to order a player on each side to leave the field. Rightly or wrongly, a section of the crowd believed that the visitors were to blame for what had happened. As a sequel, Burnley alleged that they were bombarded with missiles as they drove in a wagonette along Bolton Road. Jack Hillman, their goalkeeper was reported to have been struck in the face by a stone, and the players generally were said to have had narrow escapes from injury.
When the matter was investigated by a commission of the Football Association the Rovers club put in affidavits to the effect that there was no stone-throwing within at least 200 yards of Ewood Park, and as far as they knew nothing of the kind took place at that distance. The club were honorably acquitted, the commission dismissing the appeal and holding that no blame attached to the Rovers committee. They suggested, however, that it would have been more prudent if protection had been provided for the Burnley team until they reached the town. As the complainants had asked not for a penalty, but for a ruling on the subject, they were equally satisfied with the decision.

Also, contrary to some opionion on here, I don't thinnk it's a good sign that a new manager goes public with criticism of players. By all means ball out the lazy overpaid underachievers in private, but telling the press is to please the Venkys and the fans.

Appleton has some of Kean's garbage to dispose of and reallity is 10 points to catch up to the play-off spot seems thin, hope he can sign someone with skill and passion
We need wins quickly or it's another season of trying to get out of this league

Venky's have done a lot wrong but now seem to be trying to put things right by giving the control back to the manager and allowing a normal structure to be put inplace in order that we may compete with other clubs on a like to like basis. The fact that they all came to see for themselves the problems they have caused is good and they need to come more often. But the booing needs to stop NOW and give Appleton the chance he deserves. Throwing snowballs at Venky's on Saturday will achieve nothing Now they seem to be acting properly give them a chance to put things right as we will know in a few Months time. BRAG needs to disband as they are out of touch and their timing is way out and will cause more damage than good.
