Rovers land a trip to Derby
3:38pm Sunday 6th January 2013 in News
GARY Bowyer is relishing a return to where his coaching career started after Blackburn Rovers were drawn at Derby County in the FA Cup fourth round.
Rovers's comprehensive 2-0 third round win at home to Bristol City was rewarded with a trip to their Championship rivals, having drawn there earlier in the season.
Caretaker boss Bowyer is expected to still be in temporary charge, after the club announced he will be in the hot seat until the end of the month, and believes both sides will fancy their chances of progressing to the fifth round.
He said: “It is a good one for me because Derby is where I started out in coaching. I was coaching the under u12s under John Peacock.
“Their manager is Nigel Clough as well, so there is the Nottingham Forest link as well, and it should be a good game.
“Both teams will go into the match thinking there is a good chance of progressing to the fifth round.”
Bowyer was also full of praise for the Rovers fans who turned out for Saturday's third round triumph at Ewood Park.
The 5,504 attendance was Rovers' lowest home gate since August 1991 but Bowyer was quick to thank those who were there.
He said: “It is a difficult time of the year with three games in the Christmas period. I can't thank the supporters who came here enough.
“They were really vocal and to stay at the end and clap the boys off ,the lads were appreciative of.
Hopefully we will have a big following again against Wolves on Friday night.”
The tie will be played on the weekend of January 26.

I recall going to Derby for a 4th Round replay in 91 and Rovers won 5-2! Bent got a couple I think and Matt Jansen scored.
Also remember being beat at the Baseball ground 1-3 in a 5th Round tie in the late seventies. 30,000 on with a cracking Rovers following. It was so packed that when we were leaving the ground some Rovers fans were trapped/squashed against the tea and pie shack which came off its base and started moving along with crowd.....Derby had the likes of Colin Todd and McFarland, Hector and even Charlie George playing for them - so no disgrace to get beat that day. Great atmosphere even in defeat.

i am afraid my memory dims - but i recall going to baseball ground, when they were a terrific team and getting done 3-0? in a cup game probably 70s.
also remember going there unfer the kendall regime 80 or 81? and micky speight releasing a thunderbolt - i seem to recall it broke the net - hotshot hamish (them ginnels were a recipe for ambush by mad rams)
but surely the best bar none was the second leg of the semis in the play-offs.....MORAN!
!!!!! Great days indeed - that stand behind the goal was rocking (and i mean literally rocking that wonderful night)

He said he covered every blade of grass but I would ask why, did he not have a position to play in the game plan as we lacked width so often in the game. He is also so greedy and hardly ever plays for the team as he seeks the glory with ridiculous goal attempts when Rhodes has lost his marker and will finish the job with a goal if Richards and Rochina would pass rather that go for glory and think only of themselves. Their greed is just wasting the £8m investment in Rhodes who is so much better at finishing than any of them if given the pass an the chance and his frustration with the above is beginning to show on the pitch.
CKR and all the Portuguese players do not understand the work ethic required when we don't have the ball and do not work for th team, that puts great pressures on central midfield and defence. With the same starting line up as against Bristol we will be overrun by most Champoinship teams and would have no chance of the play offs.
This may seem negative but I want promotion this season and believe it may be our only chance of promotion and that will require players with passion and fight who work very hard to close down when the opposition have the ball and I challenge everyone to watch the workrate of any of the Portuguese players and CKR's workrate when we don't have the ball. Watch also how many times in a game these players give away possesion cheaply and how easily they are shrugged off the ball, always looking for free kicks when more strength and effort is what is actually required. Vukevic is class yet why is there such reluctance to play him from all managers. He should have played from the start against Bistol and should not have been subbed by Berg at Blackpool, but he is NOT a full back.
How some of the current players selected can keep Gomes and Vukevic out of the team is hard to understand for me as it will need experience to get us into the play offs.
I would also sell Ollsen if we get the chance, he is a very poor defender and overrated and his final pass or cross when he gets forward is almost always poor, overhit or misplaced. I believe he is a liability at full back and with around £3m we could do so much better and maybe bring in two players more suited to the Championship battle.
Having said all this, it is a game of opinions but after 46 years of home and away support I want us back where we belong regardless of the pathetic mess our so called management team are making of the job and which the Venky's have precided over. How can they create such confusion, why can they not give direction and very clear lines of responsibilities and power. How hav they managed to make a £1billion turnover accross 28 businesses when you look at their management of Rovers.

You see, strikers need to be greedy.
Rochina and Kaz might be a bit greedy but I want them to be a bit greedy as you will get more goals from shooting than passing.
3 wins in row. Rochina to get player of season, seems like he is running the show since Gary came in.

I also dislike Mick Phelan, but mainly because he now spends his time in a constant battle with Brian McClair trying to see who who can get farthest up Alex Fergusons ar5e. I actually thought he was a good player at Burnley so probably doesn't count.

The only criticism I would have is he allowed the guy who was (literally) marking him to wind him up and spent too much time looking for non existent fouls, and he was very lucky to get away with the elbow in the face in retaliation.

Not comparing like for like of course. but if you watched the united match this weekend, Giggs to RVP? sublime. Thats the kind of passing that Rhodes needs to bang in the goals early and make us less jumpy in our seats for 90 mins.
GB playing the Vukster makes me happy, he's an amazing versatile player who gives it his all for 90 mins. I think many people wonder the same, why he doesnt get picked over the other first team names. Hopefull GB will change all this.
You can see from the last three games, he is also trying to find his best team and that's the problem with too many management changes I guess.
GB will sort it.. Bring on the wolves!

have you spoke with the Dutch fella of late ? he back off to Texas soon.
Ribblesdale coaches I assume ? I'm a little sketchy of the early years , but I'm certain that was the game I was at that you speak of. Shad Centre mob wasn't it for these games ? The pre and post match stands out more than the actual game, I'm afraid such was the nature of looking out for your skin !
Most hated Bunley player ? The whole bunch of them non more so than the buffoon Ball ! I still believe that put Dunny in traction with his back ?
Great memories of the play off 2nd leg though. Didn't sleep for a day or two properly after that !

Alternatively, if the tea and pie shack has hung up it's boots it would be a better strategic thinker than The Global Adviser and should be appointed immediately as the new manager. It would probably find a 6 month contract attractive so that it would be left free for storing garening equipment during the summer and busy autumn periods.

The point is the spine of the team from that era seemed to be the same for years and years, Jones, Faz, Keeley, Metcalfe, Parkes, Garner.... I'll bet we used less players in that 10 years than we have in last two and a half.
I know its a different world now, but some of us still haven't got over the Vulcan being knocked down.
Maybe I will wake up and realise its all been a bad dream, that mosque in Little Harwood is still called Unit Four and I can go get a pair of baggies from Clobber on saturday morning !
