Blackburn Rovers have window of opportunity
11:30am Saturday 22nd December 2012 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers prepare for the final home game of 2012 struggling in the Championship table and wondering where their big summer plans went wrong.
Even a victory against Brighton this afternoon won’t be able to disguise the fact that Rovers need reinforcements in the January transfer window – but that will also surely mean departures as well.
Having committed to huge wages this summer for signings that have yet to work, Henning Berg will be preparing himself for a January balancing act as he looks to get the squad he needs.
Rovers signed 12 players in the January transfer window, of which one has so far proved a real success, and that disastrous few months of business is costing the club dear.
Without two new signings, at least, Rovers can forget any notion of challenging for a promotion spot but that is easier said than done having already stretched themselves financially to the limit.
GOALKEEPER Paul Robinson appears to be heading for the exit door in the January transfer window, leaving Blackburn with Jake Kean and Greg Sandomierski, who is a bit of an unknown quantity, while Kean has shown glimpses of real promise but, if Robinson leaves, Rovers surely need a new number one.
Brad Friedel would appear the perfect solution and, as well as being a solid first choice stopper, he could be a mentor for Kean and a future coach for the club.
DEFENCE A lot has been said about Rovers’ defensive inadequacies and there is no doubt at times this season individual performances have not been good enough.
A trio of Scott Dann, Grant Hanley and Gael Givet should be good enough for the Championship though, although there is the feeling they are one player light.
Portuguese defender Nuno Henrique was bizarrely brought to the club in the summer and has been nowhere near the first team squad.
Having him at Ewood Park and not involved is simply a waste of money and Rovers should look to take advantage of the interest there is in him, to free up space to bring in a no nonsense centre half.
Rovers are also short of a left back with Martin Olsson’s best position in left midfield. Gael Givet can play there but ideally a left back is needed in January.
Adam Henley has shown he is good enough at right back and, with Jason Lowe also more than capable there, Bradley Orr can be released from the wage bill permanently.
MIDFIELD BLACKBURN Rovers’ major weakness this season so far has been in the centre of midfield as they continue to lack a tough tackling, combative player.
Danny Murphy and Dickson Etuhu were brought in the summer, on big wages, and were heralded as the answer to the problems in the middle of the pitch.
As of yet neither have done anywhere near enough to suggest they can spearhead a promotion push but Rovers have very little option at the moment.
Jason Lowe is energetic enough in the centre but you get the feeling Rovers desperately need a tough-tackling midfielder quickly.
If Morten Gamst Pedersen is going to continue to be ignored he needs to be allowed to leave, while taking advantage of interest from abroad in Mauro Formica could also free up some funds next month.
Josh King could be the solution to the lack of a right winger, while the likes of Simon Vukcevic and the Olsson twins provide enough cover on the left.
STRIKER Jordan Rhodes will score goals in given the chance for Blackburn Rovers but at the moment the service from midfield is minimal.
Colin Kazim-Richards has shown in patches he could be a dangerous foil for Rhodes, but needs to be played in attack rather than wasted on the right wing.
David Goodwillie is available again in January and will get a chance but you get the feeling he is one player who needs to be released from the wage bill.
Leon Best is still waiting in the wings as he recovers from injury and could be a key player come February. The question is will it be too late?

Pitting that aside, best Christmas present we could wish for today is a convincing win for Rovers at Ewood and an equally convincing pasting at Birmingham for those old dingles.
Merry Christmas one and all and come in you blues

I want to ask Shebby this key question though, what business employs people who don't contribute to the running of its business - which as any business is success, be it financial or footballing success.
These Portuguese players that were brought in, may or may not be any good, but if we've got them on the books, why aren't we utilising any of them apart from Nunes??
They may not cost a lot in relative terms to say, Murphys wages, but they're still costing money??

There are lots of things going on that don't add up or make sense and I'm sure Venkys won't tell us. Personally , and I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting fed up of being treat like a Kshudra (lowest caste ) by them.

As for the buying of players well those that agreed the deals obviously had no idea about what the Championship is - quality comes after effort and application in this league and to survive you need a physical presence which Rovers dont have. You san understand now why Yakubu was desparate to leave he knew all about from his loan spell at Leicester
The merry go round of players in and out should be in full swing come January1st but I am not optimistic based on last 18 months ofplayer activity.
Berg deserves a chance but will he get one?

Agnew, Shaw and others are just sitting back, saying nothing and picking up big salaries whilst the club crumbles. Shame on them.

Is it contracts?
I mean, they're costing Venky's money that they could be pocketing if you believe the asset stripping theories.
Andy just said it was the Refs decision for the game being cancelled btw, Berg and management not happy.

I really want to see Berg turn this around but as the weeks go by, it's looking more and more like wishful thinking. If we are in this position by mid-February then he and some of the backroom staff have to be changed. Although, I don't think the best managers could get this lot pulling a promotion push. We need change.

The foreign players we have are more for the future and not for the current hard championship games. We require real British guts and thunder.
Alan shearer and David batty types of players....
The bare minimum....!!
We need to bring in at least 1 central defender and one central midfielder.
I would ask the manager to consider some experienced players and get them on loan or buy them outright.
e.g.
D:Richard Dunne at villa
D: Ron Vlaar at villa
what do you think...!!
maybe you know of others more capable..??
for midfield i would ask the rest of the fans f they know of any dynamic midfielder who is capable of ding the business at Ewood.
Hopefully you guys can come up with some good players in our football leagues that may be good for us and help us to turn around our fortunes.

According to the stats on the Rovers web site he has made just 6 appearances this season out of 24 league and cup games.
Given his large salary it is very poor value for money especially when he can only last 60 minutes.
He should have been released years ago and must be one of the first to go in any clearout.

The squad is so lacking in any true quality...but is that a confidence thing?....probably some part of it is, but there is also a lack of LEADERSHIP on and off the pitch. We are a club still floundering trying to find an identity and at the moment drifting into the lower reaches of this league....once in there as we oh too well know it is difficult to get out. So where do we go wrong in my opinion its at the back, but not helped by a weak centre both at the back and in midfield.
At Blackpool for the first 20mins we were good then with their first attack they score from a FREE HEADER in our box....how many times has this happened. I recall one of the major turning points in our relegation scrap last season was away at Bolton, we had just put a little run together and a result that day MAY and I do say MAY have seen us go on to stay up. What happened SCOTT BLOODY DANN happened in front of all us suffering away supporters.....a centre half for Bolton (Wheater I think) who had not scored for donkey's helped himself to two free headers supposedly marked by Scott BLLODY Dann and the rest is history. He is simply not reliable enough, nor is Hanley, unless we change these two and as has been said above put Givet to left back, we will continue to ship goals and lose games. You build victories on a sound and reliable defence we have neither of those and have not had since the departure of Samba and Nelson (anyone see that little feature on MOTD sat night?? not bad for a player we could not get fit! and that is a disgrace to whoever was behind that shambles). How we could do with a player of Nelson's quality or Berg for that matter?
Others not good enough include Formica, Lowe (possibly ok at right back but not good enough or strong enough in midfield), Henley (not sure yet), Etuhu (what a weak player for one built so strong) Murphy (past it), Pederson (legs gone).
Henning Berg has got one hell of a job to sort this inherited mess out.
Merry Christmas to all and lets hope for a slightly happier New Year god we deserve it for continuing to have to put up with this lot!!

I believe we fans should do everything possible especially in difficult times to bring the fans & BRFC together.
We need to be stronger, we need to show the world we can come together in times of need and this period is that occasion.
I believe in BRFC and Blackburn and would ask every fan and resident of the Lancashire area to get together and be positive. We shall not be allowed to be dragged to the bottom of everything.
We are a proud people of Lancashire a proud club and we should raise ourselves to where we belong to the upper echelons of English society and the the premiership again one day soon.
to the football......!!
I think we should raid clubs who are thinking of bringing in new players themselves.
e.g. QPR as it seems are a club waiting to make changes to their staff hence a good time to get some of their players.
I can think of some at QPR who could fit the bill.
what do you guys think..?
Givet is going in January.
Defenders needed and a midfielder.
