Berg eyes move for MacDonald
9:31am Monday 17th December 2012 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
HENNING Berg wants to bring former Aston Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald to Ewood Park in a bid to help arrest Blackburn Rovers’ Championship slump.
Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Blackpool was Rovers’ fourth loss in the last five games to leave them in 15th in the Championship, seven points adrift of the top six and 13 off the automatic promotion spots.
An under pressure Berg insisted no final decision had been made on the future of his current coaching staff last week when asked about potential imminent changes.
But the Lancashire Telegraph understands Berg’s bosses have reinforced their desire for change behind the scenes over the weekend, with assistant manager Eric Black and coach Iain Brunskill still believed to be in the firing line, as they desperately search for a solution to the club’s slide down the table.
Berg has identified 52-year-old MacDonald as a possible new assistant, with expected changes set to be finally executed in the coming days.
Former Leicester, Liverpool and Coventry midfielder MacDonald was on the coaching staff at Aston Villa between 1995 to 2012, where he enjoyed a number of roles including reserve team boss and caretaker manager.
He has also been caretaker manager at Leicester City and assistant manager at Republic of Ireland under Steve Staunton.
Berg has picked up just six points from a possible 27 since taking the reigns at Ewood Park as the frustration grows among the Ewood Park faithful.
Owners Venky’s, global advisor Shebby Singh, Berg and the players were all subjected to vocal criticism during Saturday’s defeat at Bloomfield Road – and Berg admits he understands their frustration.
He said: “I can understand the frustrations. The support from the fans before the game, in the first half and even at times in the second, they were supporting the team.
“These players are trying their best, sometimes it might not look like it, for these players to be the best they can be, they don’t get better by being booed or shouted at.
“I know it is easy for the fans to do that but these players don’t get better by that. To help the team, to help the players, get right behind them and as long as the game goes on push them, help them, do whatever you can and take your frustration out after the game.
“I understand the frustration and most of that we feel as well. The players, myself, the staff, we feel that frustration because no one is happy with the results we have had.
“At the same time we have to look at what we are doing on the pitch as well and at times some of what we are doing is quite good.”
Rovers spurned numerous opportunities as they enjoyed the better of the first half at Blackpool but a goal in each half from West Thomas and Kirk Broadfoot – and a dismal second half showing from the visitors – left Berg frustrated.
He said: “In terms of commitment and attitude, I think they are trying their best. I would have been even more disappointed if I felt the players weren’t trying.
“When you are on a bad run of course the confidence drops and then you get a little bit passive. You start doubting yourself, you don’t step forward, you step back and it looks as though you aren’t committed.
“All our players want to do the best they can every time they walk out on the pitch. I am not questioning the attitude.”

Some of those players are NOT fit to wear our shirt - they take huge wages and then consistantly UNDER PERFORM - that might be acceptable to you Henning but we have had 2 years of it and we are sick of it.
Those fans who went on Saturday and who sang those anti SS, Venky and player songs were RIGHT to do so - if you or they don't like it then get them to perform !!!
If Venkys or SS don't like then they can GIVE (yes GIVE) the club to the fans and walk away - the club is WORTHLESS now and they have not put 1 single penny into the club so I defy anyone to tell me how US, the fans can do any worse with no money then that shower who have put NO MONEY into the club.

When we start seeing some effort, passion, energy and common sense displayed by these overpaid individuals then we might have something to cheer about. At the moment our frustrations are simply due to the fact these players are lazy, don't seem to care less and are simply not good enough. Hope for this to all change on Saturday and I will then be cheering and enjoy my xmas turey..........but I won't hold my breath!!!!

There is no sense whatsoever submitting Berg to abuse, whatever misgivings there may be about him.The squad we have is what he has to work with, some "promising" players are just not going to make it -Rochina, Formica.
Some expensive players, Murphy, Etuhu, Dann were signed for agents' fee more than football ability. Olsen has lost heart, Hanley isn't even Championship class and Lowe will never be better than OK.
Let's see what Berg can do in January - whether he has a free hand to choose or whether we'll be dealing mainly for others to get their percentage, or whether Vnkys are going to spend any more remains in doubt. By now even the dimmest owners - eg Venkys - must have realised they don't have the dosh to cut it in the Premiership, and even worse don't have the management structure or players to get back into the Premeirship. Rovers cannot be made into the hatchery they might have wanted it to be, buy youngsters train them up and flog them. This hasn't worked, I presume Rochina dn Formica were prototypes of that failed plan.
So any stability let alone a return to the Premiership will have to depend on good old fashioned footie management, not unlike te job Souey did for us.
Whether Venkys have the guts or brains to realise that, I doubt. Certainly that loon they employ as a global adviser hasn't and unfortunately he probably has more sway with Venkys than Berg.
It's dire but howling abuse at the players and Berg does no good.

I can just see him now with his tracksuit on telling the players were they went wrong on Saturday. No wonder the players look like they aren't interested, they are being looked after and ridiculed by a buffoon!

The club is fubar'd. I'm almost relieved that I won't be able to make it to Ewood this weekend to watch them get turned over by Poyet's Brighton. This administration can't seriously expect that p!ss-poor performances typified by the Cardiff debacle, the insistence on playing Dann and Etuhu and pie-in-the-sky noises about promotion are going to get punters flooding back to Ewood.

For what it is worth, given the players now available at the club, my team would be. Robinson or Kean, Henley, Hanley, Givet, Olsson: Lowe, Rochina, Formica, CKR: Vetrcovic (not sure of spelling!), Rhodes. This is a 4 4 2 set up with CKR moving forward as necessary to become 4 3 3. We do not need either Dann or Etuhu, One makes too many errors, the other races around like a headless chicken, committing fouls, and most of his passes go to the opposition. One thing is certain, Rhodes needs help up front, because he is a fantastic striker, but cant do it on his own.
Shouting abuse at the players will make no difference and it does not help, and whether Venkys own the club, or if someone else does, that is for the long term and we need to get behind the players and manager now. They are trying to do their best in a situation not of their making.

In my view it is down to the manager to impose his ideas, motivate players, dictate tactics and win matches instead of trying to explain and excuse very poor performance both on and off the pitch.
And yes I do realise that perhaps he is not master of his and our destiny and if that is the case then it's time he said so and stopped taking the blame for you know who's shortcomings.
Time to man up and give us some honesty instead of the 'Kean speak'.

Answer - because he had been out of work for 12 months and didn't have any!
After his appontment I did ask the question on this forum why he had been out for so long and had been working as a TV football pundit.
The answer I got from one poster was that he had been simply waiting for the right opportunity to come along.
Trust me, if he had been any good a a manager in Norway someone would have appointed him as manager within weeks.
I am afraid that so far, Berg hasn't shown any leadership or tactical knowledge whatsoever - e.g. Rhodes continues to be completely isolated up front.
Remember, in Paul Ince's case - it was obvious to fans after a few weeks in charge that he was not the man.
Is Berg the right man - I doubt it.

Will P says...
Berg however, isn't the whole coaching staff. Berg doesn't represent whether a player is talented or not. His record so far has been poor, granted, but none of the players have an idea what's going on. Only a small minority play like they have something to go for, the rest seem to be waiting for a transfer.
Now to have that attitude, the people who you are learning from install that into them. You always learn more from someone inspiring or from someone who makes you try to bring the best out. That's what we need, coaches who will spur them on, and even if they aren't technically great, at least make them a trier. Look at Norwich, they just work hard for each other.
I don't like the formation either, I don't like 4-4-2, it's dull, predictable and most teams now can just change their style to take over the midfield. I'd go for 3-5-2 but we don't have good enough centre backs/a defensive midfielder/or midfielders to pull it off.
There aren't excuses either, if they can't find the players to bring in in january, then they are just lazy and idle. The players and coaches are out there, you can buy better players than we have even with a Venky's budget!
Where's a Qatari when we need one.

Whoever owns the club, it is only the players and manager that can change things. I reckon the manager should stop making press statements and concentrate on the team. As they say, actions speak louder than words, and that is where the fans want to see the improvemt. I personally do not care who owns the club and money is not always the answer.
Rangers appear to be using home grown players because they have no choice. Perhaps that is the route to take, have local players who want to play with pride for their own local team.

b) no box to box midfield player
c) no natural right sided forward player
d) no attacker who can hold the ball up (ok, we have to see Best yet)
e) a lot of old, very slow, immobile, ageing players susceptible to injury
f) no decent crosser of a ball / dead ball specialist (except Pedersen - see e above !)
Kean & Venky's between them systematically got rid of all the best players we had (too numerous to mention) and all our best backroom / admin staff in order to reduce the wage bill and satisfy their 'consultants'. All this with no experience or a clue how to run a football club.
I expected Rovers to struggle this season - I even contemplated a bet that we'd get relegated, - Berg has a big task. He must be given time. Write this season off, don't get relegated, and try to kick on next season.

Forget attractive football, build up the confidnce with a solid performance and clean sheet and in a few weks build from that - hopefully with a few stronger defenive players.

The whole club from fans, players to backroom staff have been poisoned by Venky's ineptitude and Kean's mismanagement over the last two years, yet still it goes on and on, and on.
In the transcript of Shebby's forum last week it is pretty clear, when talking about resolving financial issues it was "WE are sorting them out", yet when talking about potential new players it was "I am sorting them out".

I said at the time John Williams had his contract terminated - to satisfy the avarice of Agent Anderson who wanted him out of the way to fulfil his sinister plan - that Venky's would live to rue the day. That day is here.
My thoughts on what is wrong at Ewood are well documented and I have no reason to go through them all again. Suffice to say EVERYTHING is wrong from top to bottom. It is pointless calling for Venky’s to go, or for a new manager to be appointed. Where will we be then?
It appears Venky’s are here to stay – for the foreseeable future, anyway. Mrs Desai and the Rao brothers have that future, perhaps our very existence as we know it, in the palm of their hands and in my view they can make only one decision that will save us – reappoint John Williams and Tom Finn, whatever it takes to do it.
I know many will say ‘not a chance’. But they have GOT to make it happen. John knows this club inside out. He knows a lot of what has happened and what he doesn’t know he will quickly find out from past and present members of staff. And Venky’s will need to lay bare their souls, be open with him and fully explain why they have acted with such folly for so long.
If they cannot do it themselves, get someone to do it for them. Someone with heart and soul in the club who could sit down and tempt John and Tom back - on their terms. Maybe Robert Coar, ex-directors or chairmen, Ian Battersby, Wayne Wild, anyone who could broker it. Anyone.
John will know immediately what needs to be done. Venky’s must put their trust in him, back his decisions and give him complete authority to rebuild our once-proud club as fast as he can and restore the stability we once enjoyed.
That one decision – which would be their only correct one in two years of carnage – would set us on the road to recovery. I doubt anyone else could do it.
If Venky’s cannot pull it off, heaven help us.

One last thing. Gates at Ewood will only improve if and when the team start winning matches. Football fans in general are fickle and it is a matter of fact that gates go up when teams are winning games. Rovers have been losing far too many games for fans to come flocking back. A run of wins (joke) would go an awful long way to putting more bums on seats.

It is right through the team, including management,
when you look towards the bench and Berg, a lone figure in front of a clueless back room staff is still stood there without making a change, the clock ticking by at 2-0 down, the players going through the motions, still no change…and then Mr Berg you take of an attacking player who was the best player in the first half and leave Etuhu on his afternoon stroll!
Genius tactics Berg, really effective
That is why the fans get angry.. 2 years of dross and as for as I’m concerned football for fans is all about letting steam off and voicing their opinion, they pay their money to do so

At the end of the day what do you expect when you take a good premier league club, turn them into a team which tbh, I wouldnt fancy against a division 2 club and then say "how dare you complain, sit through the match and enjoy it, then vent your frustration when the players and manager have left the pitch". Dream world Berg. Either results improve or BRFC will be playing to 5k fans next year.

At least Man U got a couple of easy wins just in time to kick start their seasons as usual.

Nothing that has happened over the last couple of years is Bergs fault, and all he appears to be asking is for the fans to get behind the players while the game is being played.
Anyone who attended the games against Chelsea, West Brom and Bolton last season will have seen how badly the bile raining down from the stands affected the players.
In my honest opinion they never recovered from that and it played a part in us being relegated.
Supporters are supposed to support and while I agree that there are several players currently at Ewood who are definitely not fit to wear the shirt, the time to tell them is after the game, not during.
I am not getting at the fans, I am one myself, and what has happened at our club, is still happening, is an absolute nightmare, but we fans, all of us who really care about Rovers, really do need to put our feelings about Venky's, Kean and the odious Shebby to one side on Saturday, get behind Berg and the team whatever is happening until the final whistle at least.
The atmosphere at Ewood is appauling these days, the only people who can change that is the fans.

I suspect he knew that the Walkers were not going to support the club and he wanted out before it ruined his CV.
Wouldn't surprise me if he engineered his sacking once Venky's took over, nice big fat paycheck, the hero worship (blubbering) of accept anything fans like Mullen, and walk into another job.
He is millions in pocket, we are paupers, that's why I hate him and what he did to us.
If he had the balls to stand up to Venky's we may not be in the mess we are in now.
