Blackburn Rovers boss wants quality not quantity

HENNING Berg believes he will be allowed to improve his squad in the January transfer window – but insists he will be only bring in players who will improve the team.

The Blackburn Rovers boss is already on the look out for fresh faces next month but is adamant players won’t be brought in ‘just for the sake of it’ and says the club will remain within their financial limits.

Talks continue about changes to Henning Berg’s backroom staff, with certain personnel potentially leaving the club imminently. Rovers are expected to talk to Eric Black, Iain Brunskill and Bobby Mimms about their futures at the club today.

But Rovers are also looking at what they can do on the field to improve their Championship performances.

Berg has only enjoyed one win from his first eight games in charge, leaving Rovers four points adrift of the play-offs, and he says the opening of business at the turn of the year as an opportunity to help their efforts.

“It is natural that every manager in the world is assessing his squad and seeing if it is possible to improve his squad. We will be the same,” said Berg.

“If we can improve this team within our financial budget of course we will do it. Our goal is to get back in the Premier League and the January window it is a possibility to do something, if we find the right players for this team.

“I think we have to improve. At the top level we are good but at the moment we are a little bit indifferent. We need to play at our top level for longer periods.

“We have a lot of young players at this club. It is a very, very young team with potential so it is natural the performances are a little bit up and down.

“But we want to be promoted and that is why we are looking to improve. If we can improve the players that are here we will do that, if we can improve by making some changes in and out then we will do that. It has to be within our financial budget and it has to be players who can improve the team.

“Of course we are assessing things as we go on and we will make sure we do the right things in the future. Improving the team, improving the squad, making sure we put us in a position where we can be promoted.”

While Rovers will be looking to add to their squad, it is also likely a few of the fringe players will be allowed to leave to free up the wage bill.

Meanwhile, Berg has hailed the importance of securing teenager defender Adam Henley on a deal at the club until 2017.

He said: “Adam has done really well. We saw him do well at Anfield and Old Trafford last season. When he came back into the team he has showed those games were not a fluke.

“He showed he is a talented young right back and if he keeps playing well he will stay in the team. We are very happy we signed him on a longer contract to make sure we keeps the players we think we can improve and can be even better.

“Even though he had a year and a half left on his deal, with players you think can develop to be top players, you want them on long contracts to make sure if someone comes in they have to pay a lot of money to get them.”

It's like this! Stop going on about promotion it's not in our intrest at the moment. We need to stop shipping goals to easily and get rid of the dead wood before we can start even thinking about promotion. After last Friday I'm more worried about staying up than going up. The problem is more about midfield competing & keeping the ball. Honestly think that promotion can be secured with the centre halves we have, we just need to release the pressure they are under because far too many times we are overrun in midfield with little pressure on the ball. We need two Centre Midfielders with engines and composure on the ball. Palacios from Stoke has been mentioned; he would be a start.

This is all Kean's fault bringing all these players in the summer were not ready to compete for a first team place which blocked good young players coming through, But I do believe that it will take Henning a good 12 months to sort this mess out and Venky's must back him, On the subject of team selection I think colin should be the target man because he is very strong and holds the ball up well, Vucevic should be given the chance and surely we cannot afford Givet being out of the team, we desperately need the midfield sorting out which ha been awful since we lost Jones and Inzonzi played, we dont have the players at the moment so we must hope that Henning will get the right players to give balance to the team. On the defence Dann and Hanley don.t seem to play well together but Hanley seems to play well with Givet, Etuhu is a nightmare is this guy on drugs or what, I have never seen a player who is so slow and unaware of whats going on around him absolutely useless. Terrible report from the auditor KPMG today saying they can't sign off their audit because of insufficient financial information with the directors unwilling to give that information KPMG cannot complete their audit. The directors of Venkys London will not give information regarding £3.3million which is unaccounted for but say more finance will be needed in order to continue and there is a funding shortfall. Venky's India insist they have the funds, but there is no proof of this also if they do not achieve promotion to the Premier League contingency plans are in place.

£5m turnover this year, part of parachute payments spent on JR. Still no actual outlay of cash from Venkys in thier tenure @ ewood. Another window with the usual tag lines "not rushing into this, prudent moves for the club, only improove the squad, bide our time, not pay over the odds", same every window and it all translates to, we'll put our hand in our pocket if we get a bargain, otherwise we won't be shelling out.

Last January we were going to improve the team with experienced Premership players who could go straight into the team and hit the ground running. What we actually got was Markus Ollson, Bradley Orr and Anthony Modeste- we were relegated. You sell your best players and replace them with **** you cant be suprised when you get what you deserve. We have no chance of going up with this squad- it needs major surgery not a plaster.

There are more than a few noticed pocket filling at Ewood, but when they do, venk's tribe come on here slagging anyone off that suggests it.

As onlookers we can only rewind and see how they have taken us down.

Whislt it's happening people are suggesting many things, some a little stretched, but the tribe are quickly off the mark to scotch wrong doing rumors. This blurs the issue and makes it difficult to get the true picture.

The bottom line is; We were a quality unit, all the best has been isolated and sold for whatever, some have been shipped out through the side door, no one of any decency would come to this outfit, so they got rejects and just to prove to idiots that they weren't asset stripping they got JR.

It doesn't help when they put people with known low moral standards in high positions.
Whichever Manager came in would need lots of luck to succeed, the club is ruined.
In my opinion Berg is a better Man than Kean, but nobody steps aside and waves you through in football so it will take a long time if there is going to be success.

The Club is less than half of what it was when they arrived, in all departments.

Don't PANIC Henning because Venky's are financially because we are reportedly one of the biggest spenders in the Championship and may soon be fighting to save our Champoinship status ( a far cry from the Premiership last year ) Everybody is right about the midfield, one tries but has lost his touch and the other is lazy and don't really care. We need proven championship or Premier players with energy, steel, creativeness and not past it and after that you need to show tactical awareness of which we have not seen so far. Now that you have leaked that your going to sack your backroom staff you wont be able to blame them in future. I dont think Black should be sacked though, he seemed to be the only one hurting big style on Friday and his points tally was ok when in charge. Anyway Henning I have no doubt Shebby will sort you out I can just imagine him acting like a mad Army General coming to work with his tin hat on in order to dodge all the muck and bullets flying about.

£5m turnover this year, part of parachute payments spent on JR. Still no actual outlay of cash from Venkys in thier tenure @ ewood. Another window with the usual tag lines "not rushing into this, prudent moves for the club, only improove the squad, bide our time, not pay over the odds", same every window and it all translates to, we'll put our hand in our pocket if we get a bargain, otherwise we won't be shelling out.

If you combine this with the fact that we have sold players like Nico Kalinic for £6m, Phil Jones for £18m, Samba for £10m, Yak for £1m, you really can't A) wonder why we got relegated B) Expect Venkys to spend money next window. They have asset stripped the club and done such a good job of it that only a few people have actually noticed.
There are more than a few noticed pocket filling at Ewood, but when they do, venk's tribe come on here slagging anyone off that suggests it.

As onlookers we can only rewind and see how they have taken us down.

If Berg and Hendry - two top class defenders - cannot stop the players we have from bluderinmg around then we do need and overhaul. Kean bought badly and Venkys sold well(to line their pockets) and we are now paying for it. League 1, with this set of players, looks more likely than promotion. make the budget public so other clubs can put their prices up. i understand all receipt from gates just pay wages for three players brought in Etuhu, Murphy and Rhodes. Can Mrs Desai come to everygame and ensure players are ready to play in first half and not wait till second half to compete in match. What are the coaches doing as players dont turn up in first half. Its also prudent to be in financial limits. Huddersfield, Leicester, Millwall etc have not spent big and are doing better.

Agree with this one. Lowe's got a good engine but has poor distribution - at the very least we need a combative CM who can pick an incisive pass. PIty about Nzonzi....

There are more than a few noticed pocket filling at Ewood, but when they do, venk's tribe come on here slagging anyone off that suggests it.

As onlookers we can only rewind and see how they have taken us down.

Whislt it's happening people are suggesting many things, some a little stretched, but the tribe are quickly off the mark to scotch wrong doing rumors. This blurs the issue and makes it difficult to get the true picture.

The bottom line is; We were a quality unit, all the best has been isolated and sold for whatever, some have been shipped out through the side door, no one of any decency would come to this outfit, so they got rejects and just to prove to idiots that they weren't asset stripping they got JR.

It doesn't help when they put people with known low moral standards in high positions.
Whichever Manager came in would need lots of luck to succeed, the club is ruined.
In my opinion Berg is a better Man than Kean, but nobody steps aside and waves you through in football so it will take a long time if there is going to be success.

The Club is less than half of what it was when they arrived, in all departments.

make the budget public so other clubs can put their prices up. i understand all receipt from gates just pay wages for three players brought in Etuhu, Murphy and Rhodes. Can Mrs Desai come to everygame and ensure players are ready to play in first half and not wait till second half to compete in match. What are the coaches doing as players dont turn up in first half. Its also prudent to be in financial limits. Huddersfield, Leicester, Millwall etc have not spent big and are doing better.
They probably have better managers and coaching staff. Oh, and also young, keen players rather than those who are over the hill and looking for a final pay day.

Well Henning, bringing in better quality than we have at the moment shouldn't be a problem, the problem will be moving on keans has beens and incapables. It is also refreshing to hear of a review of the back room staff because things obviously arnt right there by a long way and we are seeing the results on the pitch. If Berg is looking to bring some of his old team mates in I would love to see a role for Tugay because we certainly need him to sort the vacant midfield. But unfortunately the January transfer window clashes with pantomime season and Venkys never fail to amaze so I will believe owt.

Palacios is surplus to requirements at Stoke and Pulllis wanted Olsson last season. We need an experienced midfierlder who can pull some strings and control a game and Palacios used to be able to do that. Plus Martin Olsson wont be missed as a defender. So seems like a good bit of business.

I do like Olsson going forward but his heart does not seem to be in it this season in some games. I think that if his brother Marcus had not joined us then Martin may have demanded to be let go in the close season.

Hi RPC....no I am saving the vin rouge for our next home win! Shouldnt be long now....bit like buses eh, we wait ages for one to come along and then we will get three or four all together (I hope)!

I guess we are going to see lots of rumours and links with players in the next few weeks so we had better get used to seeing some more speculation again in the press, just hope that HB can sort out the wheat from the chaff (inside and outside the club) and we get a decent team playing in blue and white again..

I agree with you although any goalie would look a chump behind our pathetic defense and midfield. Its not all his fault. It drives me mad that Givet, Dunn, Vucevic and MGP are on the bench having to watch lesser skilled, lesser experienced and lesser passionate players take their place. Thts what worries me about Berg. Some things are beyond his control but others seem easy fixes.

Venkys bought the club and said they would invest, that does not mean keeping the books ticking over by paying for player wages, in my mind investment means player transfers. There are still ommisions from this years profit/loss account, we are still to account for Hoilett at very least. Venkys realised this problem of cashflow with regard to wages, hence why half our squad was shown the door last year and hence why we are in the second tier. You are probably right about the transfer movements, but good players go and inferior ones come in. The squad is continually being weakened.

I only said yesterday that Venkys would make a profit (again) in the January transfer window. Let's do the sums and see.
