We didn't defend well enough, admits Blackburn Rovers boss
11:43pm Friday 7th December 2012 in News
BLACKBURN Rovers boss Henning Berg admitted his side's defending was not good enough as they crashed 4-1 at home to Championship leaders Cardiff City tonight.
Josh King had cancelled out Mark Hudson's opener but former Rovers striker Craig Bellamy put Cardiff back in front before further goals from Joe Mason and Kim Bo-Kyung.
"We could have defended better," Berg said.
"In terms of shots on goal we had more but they were a bit more experienced and a bit more clever.
"They had a bit more strength and scored two gosls from set plays, one direct from a flick-on and one when we mad a mistake coming out from the back.
"Overall they were a bit more experienced than us and had better finishing."

At the time of writing this comments, the Rovers are 11 points off automatic promotion slots, 4 points off playoff positions, and only 1 point ahead of the Clarets - all this while having played an extra game.
I remember vaguely, a statement either by Kean / Shebby / Venky's somewhere at the start of the season, that failure to get back to the Premiership would be unthinkable. After all the new players that have been brought in, I certainly agree that anything less than promotion this season would I fear, do further harm to the great club that is Rovers.
Shebby seems to have faded out of the limelight for quite some time now. Perhaps it's time he looks back on his decision to hire Berg, and come out with Plan B's - and while he's at it, Plan C's and D's as well?

Berg needs to re assess the tactics of the team until the Jan transfer window when we can get rid of some of the dead wood like Dann and stick Hanley where he belongs in the reserves. Bring in two new central defenders then and then begin to look at more measured tactics, when you can rely on your central pairing to be organised and defend competently.

By experienced, I meant that someone who had been succesful in the Championship and knew what was needed to gain promotion e.g a Holloway, McCarthy, Warnock etc.
Instead Shebby and the Board seemed obsessed by appointing an ex-player as manager and tried to enlist Sherwood and McKinlay - who both had no managerial experience whatsover.
After the fans made their feelings known, they instead opted for Berg claiming that he had 7 years managerial experience.
That may be true, but he had never managed in England.
Did anyone on the Board examine his track record in Norway?
Basically as we all know he was the CHEAP OPTION.
Berg is quoted as saying that we did not defend well enough against Cardiff, when our performances in the past 3 home games has been very, very poor indeed and we have been outplayed by Millwall, Bolton & Cardiff.
Even the caretaker manager Eric Black made a better use of the squad at his disposal than Berg.
Cut our losses now and bring in Mark Hughes.

The main problems as far as I can see are that we haven't got anyone in midfield who can actually win tackles. For such a big guy, Etuhu is hopeless at tackling, while Murphy is just too slow by half. What we need is another Savage or Flitty to actually win the ball, but where the hell do we find them?
We then need someone who can pass the ball to one of our players, preferably in a forward direction. At this stage I would be tempted to put Givet in midfield to win the ball and Vucevic as the playmaker - after all that's where he plays for his country.
We also need better service from the wings, otherwise it would have been a waste of money buying Rhodes. Personally I would be tempted to see if Duff was available in January. At least he could beat a man and get the ball across.
And while talking about signings, whatever's happened to those three other Portuguese players Kean signed, including a 'top midfielder' and a 'top centre back'.
Berg needs time to bring in some decent players and get rid of a lot of deadwood - but unfortunately time isn't something we've got plenty of

A clean sweep by Berg is an absolute must or he his going to find himself down the road leaving BRFC in the hands of the nutters in Pune, and looking at the record to date doesn't appear to have any silver lining on the horizon ?
I refuse to turn on Berg, but I hope he will soon make a stand and give both barrels to those who can make the difference ?
Let us hope we are not the donkeys roaming around Blackpool's front next Saturday ?

Keans signings and Bergs team selections = DISASTER.
Spot on !!!!
We all know that this squad is a shocker but when you pick MO(airfix), DE, JL, MF across midfield then you are always going to struggle to win ANY game at ANY LEVEL.
Add to that he dropped CKR and picked King up front was a bizzare selection - both King and CKR had done well at Burnley and deserved to start - but in the positions they played at Burnley - left wing and up front !!! - to drop CKR and move King to stricker and bring in "airfix" Ollson was just illogical.
As for Etuhu - he can't help being a useless tellentless footballer but he can help being a lazy b@stard - he was clearly at fault for 2 of those goals by not doing the simplest of jobs - marking up and tracking back - Unforgivable, and he should NEVER (under any circumstances) play for Rovers again.
I like HB as a man but anyone who can't pick his best available team (time after time) CANNOT and WILLNOT ever make it as a manager - those who say "judge him after he has brought in his own players" - are talking rubbish - he can't pick the best team out of the squad he has now so what makes you think he's gonna have an eye for a player - GG has not played a single minuate under HB yet we have not kept a single clean sheet - SV continues to warm the bench whilst MF plays all the time and DOES NOTHING - Marcus Ollson plays (and is completely USELESS) yet King, Nunes or even MGP can play in that position and all 3 of them are a differnet level to that useless "nothing" waste of space.
HB, do the right thing and RESIGN - be honest enough and man enough to walk away - don't wait to be sacked - oh, and whilst you're at it, drag that useless tw@t Shebby Singh with you - HE must take FULL RESBONSABILITY for your appointment - he has NO IDEA what it takes to run a professional football club in England - most of us knew it before a ball was kicked but he has, beyond a shaddow of a doubt, proved it to everyone.

To be fair, Venky's were reportedly baffled by Bergs appointment, but Shebby apparently railroaded his choice through the board. We gave Henning enough chance to show what he can do, it's obvious he is not going to get used promoted - that's not to say he's a bad manager, just that he's not experienced enough for the task ahead and we all know trouble is ahead if we don't at least look like a side that could be promoted with our wage bill and running costs.
Venky's had a meeting today about the current situation. It'll be interesting to see what the outcome is.

sen on the bench? Are they not international players who should be able to adapt to situations as they arise. Dann and Hanley should never be a central defensive partnership ever again, the pair of them seem to get tied in knots at the drop of a hat with Dann appearing disiterested at times and no where near fit enough. Etuhu is incapable of passing a ball forwards. Surely we have something better available. What has Gomes done wrong???? Currently living down to my username unfortunately.

I I have seen this club destroyed piece by piece from within. The fans IGNORED and abused-sometimes physically. I came back for the wolves game and nothing had changed-on the pitch and treatment of the fans in the darwen end. It hurts but I've had enough. I wrote to shabby-no reply!
I've supported the club through bad times before but I can't stomach our owners. I've nothing against HB but his appointment sums everything up.
I suspect thousands of others feel this way! Doubtless others will criticise me and call me allsorts but something inside has died-nay been killed by the events of the last 2 years. What will bring me back? I'll let others put their views forward on that one.
Hopefully when this mess is sorted I'll be back-wherever they end up!

All season at home even when winning they never controlled the game ,midfield has been out fought outrun and except for a David Dunn cameo and a few turns fro Rueban midfield has lacked creativity.
Sadly Bergs decision to have continuity with unchanged teams has failed totally. If he believes this group of players are good enough to earn promotion this season then he is as deluded asKean and Shebby.
All will have noticed Shebby has gone awfully quiet again and when was a Vnky last spotted circling Ewood - dont blame them its not worth the bus fare from town centre never mind India
As for crowds the only reason it was nearly 13000 last night is because they count the season ticket holders - round where I sit many again were absent - fans are walking with their feet away from Ewood - troubled times ahead I fear
As for the experienced international players on the bench well dont be surprised if many jump ship at 1st opportunity because if they cant get a gamne when Rovers on the field are so bad just what is the point in staying.
I can only assume Berg was trying to v=create a young vibrant side who played nice football - wrong league this one is about organisation commitment and passion - Rovers fall short in all three areas

King did well to take his goal but his first-half performance was similar to Rochina's against Peterborough - run at defenders until they crowd you out, even though a simple pass to Rhodes would put him through. Rochina, King and Formica are all far too greedy to be playing in the same team as Rhodes and it's something that needs to be addressed immediately. I'm not saying Rhodes would score every chance he gets but I'd wager he'd score the majority of them. I think the time has come to give some of the fringe players a chance, even if it's only for one game, to not only see what they can do but also give some of the 'guaranteed' starters some food for thought.
I'm not sure what's more depressing, being a Rovers fan watching the team capitulate against Cardiff or being a Burnley fan and spending your Friday night commenting on another team's forum? Still, it looks like Christmas will come early for them as they're all fixated on leapfrogging us which, to be fair, is inevitable.

I've tried to convince myself we can turn a corner under Berg and be positive but last night it was there for all to see the shambles that Rovers have become.
I've also tried to convince myself Venkys had learnt their lesson and were trying to put things right - how wrong was I? The heart and soul has been ripped out of the club by those w4nkers and until they sell, we can expect nothing other than misery. There was zero atmosphere last night, add that to the more than half empty ground (not just because of the Venkys disease that has riddled BRFC but TV, christmas etc) and we got what we deserved. Rovers fans just seem so edgy at Ewood. There's no trust and no hope whilst these germs own the club.
It's hardly any wonder those odd balls down the road are loving it. What Venkys have done to Rovers couldn't have been scripted any better than the most warped dingle.

Mark Hughes is now available, Ole Gunnar Soljkear always was if we had been prepared to wait a month.
The idiot Singh gave Berg a three year contract but immediately stated that nothing short of an immediate Premiership return would suffice. So why was he not given a one year contract with an option to extend?
Berg's team selection, tactics and motivation are woeful so the recent results are no surprise. To those of you who defend Berg by citing that he inherited the squad, just remind yourselves where we were in Kean's last game in charge.
Of course our defence is not good enough but whilst I accept that we might have few options Gael Givet is an obvious choice for either centre or full back. Henley and Lowe are lightweights and need to grow up in the reserves.
I could go on but it is pointless trying to talk selection or tactics when the root problem sits in the boardroom, not on the pitch. This Singh character has absolutely no experience, no qualifications, no credentials and no right to be anywhere near a Championship football club and if Agnew and Shaw can not stand up to him then they should also do the decent thing and step down.
I have actively supported this club for over 55 years and have had a season ticket for the last 33. I will not be using it again until Berg and Singh are removed.

We need some wise signings in January and coaching staff to get this bunch of lazy b******s into shape. Our team really isn't that bad. Out of balance yes, but the ability is there as we show for brief spells. Some players are simply poor but there is enough there to make a good team with a few good signings. We need some proper coaching to get them turning brief spells into two 45 minute halves.

Not only this but Bergs ins and outs will define the rest of our season so until February we need to hold fire on this negativity and hope that he replaces Dann, Hanley, Murpey, Etuhu and this outside interference stops.

Posts like these are what I come on Let to read, agreed Robbo had a lot to answer for, but tbh, I was appalled at times how quick Cardiff were able to get from their goalkeeper to our box!
With regard to backroom staff, new coaching staff to be announced this week I believe. Venky's have apparently woken up to the fact that things aren't going well all of a sudden.
I wouldn't be shouting Berg out but I agree the not playing of the likes of Vuk is bizarre to say the least. Shebby being quiet definitely doesn't mean he isn't actively involved behind the scenes controlling things on the line. We're only six points to a play off place and things can still turn around, but new coaching staff and players are probably more important than a new manager. As you say, you can't polish a turd. Besides if a yes-man is Shebby criteria for a manager with no honour, it wouldn't make any great difference. I still don't think Berg is the man to get us promoted, but at this stage it would probably damage us more having to go through Shebmeisters recruitment process again for another two months!

There are many good and pertinent observations among the constructive comments here. ‘Nuttall Street’ says he can guarantee the Global Advisor will read this site. I doubt it. My view is that if we all write personal letters to Shebby, as I have done, it may bear more fruit.
I am filled with foreboding. We are in freefall at the moment and if we continue like this another relegaton is going to become a real spectre..
Three poor home performances and eight goals conceded have shattered the confidence I had before the Millwall and Bolton games. I sincerely hope Henning Berg can turn things around, but I am beginning to have doubts.
We should have begun to see his influence by now, but in all honesty we look a bunch of misfits and not-good-enoughs, lacking quality and conviction. I know Berg has inherited this lot and I know that it would take some time to turn things round, but will he be able to?
I fully expected to see some backroom changes by now but has HB been told he will have to work with what he has got – or, even worse, does he not have his own trusted ‘team’? I don’t know what departures there have been since Sam went, but we seem woefully lacking on the training and coaching side.
The stamina has gone, the work rate has gone, the fitness has gone. No method, no fire, no punch. A pitiful midfield – and still seriously lacking in defensive ability, even though that problem has been staring us in the face for two years. We are at sixes and sevens, unbalanced, careless. Goals are raining in in the last ten minutes of matches.
I am surprised we are not lower down the table than we are, but two or three more results like this and we soon will be.
If Berg has been told he must work with what he has got then we are in real trouble. It will show Venky’s have learned nothing.

Either Berg is as useless as the odious one or he is being manipulated behind the scenes ?
Everyman and his dog can see that all is not well down at the good ship Ewood, but what is the actual reason for this abysmal showing that insists on rearing it's ugly head ?
A comment above alludes to movement on the shambles that purports to be that of the coaching staff down at Ewood ? I would wish this to be the case if only to allow Berg the chance in proving himself with hand picked staff of his own.
Seeing as we are not privy to what is happening wholly behind the scenes regards these players of substance missing in action I can only surmise that form and injury is hampering these players from being involved ? Should that not be the case then surely it is only a matter of time before the whole sorry mess is exposed ?
The saga deepens and on the horizon appears no beacon of hope just a dark period becoming increasingly gloomy for us Rovers supporters, and most importantly for the club.
The loons in Pune should give their heads a real good shake and realize that the club it purchased is fast becoming a ship heading for the rocks with disaster inevitable. Broken up on the rocks into irretrievable pieces that could very well spell the end of BRFC ?
I wander aimlessly to games(mostly away) like a zombie with only memory before I - clutching at straws for better days ? Am I the only one who thought the atmosphere down at the Turf week last was subdued in contrast to the previous meetings from both sets of supporters ? Added to that a mere 12000 attending Ewood v Cardiff. This crisis is now becoming the norm, which from my perspective, can only become more entrenched should this debacle carry on.
The honeymoon period of Bergs appointment is now well and truly over, and Berg must move quickly in how he wishes to proceed with these matters and hope that he makes the wise and correct decisions for our beloved ?
In years gone by I have always looked for the core of BRFC for it's stability and success, but these last years this core, eroded, dank and abandoned leaves me with a chilling feeling that the 'dark forces' alluded to by a certain agent could very well be true ?
Whichever maybe the case BRFC is in need of urgent TLC with people who have the interests for all that BRFC stands for. This cannot go on much longer before isolation seeps into my beloved bones all matters BRFC for just what is it that we as supporters are supporting here ?
January will be the make or break time for I in so far as Berg must be seen to be in control of all matters resulting in him bringing in competent staff ? Many I know who have supported BRFC for 30/40 years are becoming stagnant and disillusioned with that which belies our club. I fail to understand how the owners can allow, for us the supporters, in being isolated by such cowardly and drastic actions that have wrecked only havoc and misery onto not only the club, but the wider community ? If this is the plan of these owners etc then it is working perfectly, and should they commit as much to the playing side of things then we would be reaching the upper echelons of the football world such is the contrast !
At present I don't hold out much hope for a brighter future under present circumstances, but wander I will next week to Blackpool hoping that a performance can be witnessed of that what I believe to be BRFC ? Carry on with this abject failure, and nothing will be more certain(other than tax and death) that I will disappear from the BRFC scene looking back with irretrievable heartbreak in so far as VENKY will have broken me with the biggest calamity that as beset BRFC in all of it's 137 year history. Now we are out of the limelight of the Premier League the dark forces could just very well see the end of BRFC as we know it ?
Have we ever been in such a disastrous situation that we find ourselves in now ?
Answers please ?

Outcome people like you and I will eventually stop going down to Ewood after years of suppoting our cub, why because we become fed up and there actually is more to life these days than being a football supporter.
My take on whats going on,HB, cheap option that does not appear be working, intead of going for an exerienced manager with his own staff.
Why has HB not brought his own staff in, he has had time to see CH is usless, is he being stopped from doing so in another cost saving exercise.
Shebbys gone very quite, owners have stopped coming again, it does not add up.
God help the club its going downhill very quickly, the only happy people down at Ewood seem to be certain agents who wont be named!!

Berg may have potential but his appointment was a massive and unnecessary decision with so many experienced managers available.
Since he took over results and performances have incredibly enough. I didnt think that was possible in the same way that Scott Dann has proved that Chritian Dailly isn't the biggest defensive waste of money in history.
People keep telling me we have the best squad in the division, I just can't see that. We have a shattered keeper, only one central defender who can defend and he can't get in the team.,2 full backs who think they are wingers who don't have to bother defending. Our midfield is simply a joke, Etuhu and Murphy should simply be ashamed of their performances, the biggest pair of free loaders ever.
On top of that we have about 6 players who all want to play in the free no 10 role and no one who wants to do the hard work needed to get the best out of Rhodes.
Absolute joke of an organisation

NO ! NO MORE MONEY FOR NEW PLAYERS ,NO MORE MONEY FOR **** TRANSFERS AND MASSIVE AGENTS FEE`S.

Take the main squad players:
Robinson - A good shot-stopper, but positioning lets him down and he fails to command his area.
Henley - Bags of potential and energy, but obviously lacks experience.
Dann - Has been one of more consistent performers this season, but still prone to numerous, and very costly mistakes.
Hanley - Still developing and would improve with a better defensive partner.
Martin Ollson - Often caught out of postion at full back but could be better employed on left midfield.
Givet - Someone who always gives 100 per cent, but again can be caught out by quick attackers, but at least he tackles.
Formica - Drifts in and out of games and seldom makes any real impact.
Murphy - Too slow for the Championship, caught in possession far too often, rarely finds a defence-splitting pass and rarely tackles, plus no apparent leadership.
Etuhu - Again too slow. For a big man, his tackling is atrocious and he seldom makes an impact.
Marcus Ollson - Enthusiastic but not up to standard, rarely using his pace to get to the line.
King - Head down and runs as fast as he can with the ball and hope he doesn't get tackled before he belatedly decides to try to pass.
Rhodes - It's a bonus he's reached double figures with the abysmal service he receives. Desperately needs a good target man to play alongside.
Kazim-Richards - Has potential to frighten defences if only he showed more poise and tried passing more often.
Pedersen - Still probably covers more ground than anyone else, but the quality of his crosses and deadball kicks has dropped.
Dunn - Probably the most die-hard Rovers player, it's such a shame he's so injury prone.
Vukevic - Has been very lively in his few 'cameo' appearances and could make a difference if given a run in the side.
Gomes - Quality player, but hardly used now. Could be a foil for Rhodes.
Rochina - Probably our most talented player, but also the most frustrating.
Lowe - Doesn't make an impact in central midfield, and too often plays the ball backwards instead of forwards. Still time to develop, but could he be better at full back?

Not to contradict you here LP, but at least when we had no coin to pay the bill as such our dignity was intact. Having no money is no shameful thing, but rubbing along with what you have to the best of your ability's looking toward a future that is bright because we have the desire, commitment, and most importantly a link to all that is worth preserving ?
Ours is in no way deserving of any preferential treatment, but this chasm that is being created is gut wrenching for the likes of myself, maybe it's down to the period of time supporting BRFC - I'm not fully sure, but what I am witnessing, even allowing for positive thoughts along the way, is total and utter degradation of duty towards all that have supported it with the shambolic set up.
RPC quite rightly states the standard of the players at this time in a B&W shirt. Simply not good enough. The whole set up as had no real preparation for live in the Championship, through what I believe to be, idiotic conjectures by utter and useless novices with a dream including the notorious odious one at the helm spluttering and flimflamming along acquiring at the same time players of obvious quality's, but never in a million years up to the rigours of English football. Taking away the players beginning with the first out the door the 'Rolls Royce' (warts and all) Emerton we have been left with fringe players of a first team squad, which under normal circumstances would be learning their trade under good stewardship, in hoping to replace the aging players further down the line. The buffoon and oaf SK always said didn't he
'these are players for the future' and what a fiasco it as turned out to be. Those players confidence is totally shattered with what as/is going on down at Ewood thus we see this cockeyed attempt at cohesion etc on the pitch.
Berg is the last redeeming feature for I, and I hope he can turn this all sorry mess around with brave actions finally creating stability for the club to halt this drastic decline that we have as Blackburn Rovers supporters attempted to do on pages such as these.
A winning formula must be found quickly, and not just on the pitch or those dark days of obscurity will again become the norm. And the most damaging aspect in all of this for me as a long time supporter of BRFC is the legacy of the late J Walker does not seem to matter, and after stating they would always uphold the fine traditions of this working town wishing to add to that history have done the exact opposite, and that is now, having watched the team under these preposterous owners and their cohorts become a circus. We have been poo down the years in spells, but this is a whole new crisis that involves huge amounts of money absolutely jeopardising the very existence of that which we have reared ourselves on with BRFC.
With age comes wisdom they say - well, I hope I have acquired some of that, and from this standpoint it seems clear, and above all true, as we speak today.
I say nothing new to that which hasn't already been said, but the sadness of all this is that 2 years + we are still speaking about it, and with greater trepidation. The story is there !

Kean/Venkys systematically got rid of all the good/experienced players who were the backbone of the team like Samba and Nelson, and even NZonzi who is starring for Stoke every week now - and instead they draughted in the Portugese colony (one or two decent players out of six or seven that came in) and brought in some new 'experienced players' like Scott Dann (who always looks haunted by relegation memories at two clubs now), and Etuhu and Murphy who show only patchy skill and little or no enthusiasm for the fight that is needed in the Championship.
The only real 'success' is Rhodes and maybe CKR - plus Vukevic if he is ever given a proper chance to show what he can do.
Berg is right - we need good quality and experienced players in key positions quickly. We need a central midfielder and at least one Center Half for starters. Plus one or two other experienced players in other positions like RB for instance which has been a problem area now for three seasons.
Berg has to be given time to build his own team - anything else would be ridiculous. He must know though that he has perhaps not lived up to the fans early expectations that he would initially make us harder to beat and more competitive - whilst he built his own side. We need to see what the Jan window Santa brings us now.

The key message is that the whichever way you juggle the team then the present squad is simply not good enough or experienced enough to win more games than we lose and challenge for promotion. On that note I see we were linked with Wilson Palacios this morning who seems out of favour at Stoke now. (Due to N'Zonzi's good midfield displays apparently). He looked good when he was at Wigan and Spurs but think he had some injuries and form loss at Stoke. Is he the right man for us in midfield? He is certainly experienced but is he good enough now?
Maybe just paper talk.
A good day to you also Mr W...

ROVERS SHOULD NOT BUY ANYONE IN THE WINDOW ,TO FUND MORE FAT COMMISSIONS FOR AGENTS .
BERG KNEW HIS PLAYERS WHEN HE TOOK THE JOB AND MADE HIS PROMISES WITH THESE SAME PLAYERS , LET BERG DO WHAT HE PROMISED ,GUARANTEED PROMOTION.
FRENCH OVER YOU ARE MAKING IT FAR TOO OBVIOUS YOUR ONLY INTEREST IN BERG SPENDING MONEY FOR PLAYERS ,I FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL FINANCIAL GAIN .
**** OBVIOUS BY NOW , IS IT JUST FOR THE FILTHY MONEY YOU DO THIS UNDERHANDED SCHEMING ??
