Berg looking for first win at Ewood Park
9:53am Friday 7th December 2012 in News
Henning Berg
HENNING Berg is still waiting for his first home win as Blackburn Rovers boss, but he has seen enough in his side’s performances to be hopeful he can break his Ewood Park duck against Cardiff City tonight.
Rovers host the Championship leaders in front of the Sky Sports cameras, having slipped up in their three games at Ewood since Berg was appointed as manager.
A draw against Birmingham was followed by back-to-back home losses against Millwall and Bolton, but the Norwegian believes their displays merited more points than they picked up.
“That is football,” Berg said of his wait for a home victory.
“Sometimes you go through spells like that but based on performances and chances for and against, the Millwall game could have easily gone our way. Millwall had some fantastic shooting to win the game.
“We had more chances and shots on goal than them overall, even though at times maybe they played a little higher level in their best periods of the game.
“Bolton started the game much better than us and we conceded a sloppy first goal.
“Then they scored from a free kick, we got one back and were close to getting another back. On another day with the chances we had we could have got a result.
“We had more shots on goal than Bolton but still didn’t win the game.
“That can happen.
“In football this can happen, you can go through spells where you don’t play well and you win games.
That was maybe the case early in the season when Rovers picked up points without producing too many convincing performances, and Berg believes victory is more than possible against Cardiff.
The Bluebirds have won all 10 of their home games this term but have triumphed only three times on the road.
“We are playing the league leaders, they have set the standard and it will be a good test for us,” Berg said.
“We have some very good young players in the team and how they play against the best team in this league, it will be interesting to see how they cope with that.
“At the same time we are at home, we are looking to play well and we are looking to win the game.
“We are looking to impose ourselves on Cardiff, even though they are the league leaders.
“We have played some good teams at home, Millwall were on a great run and we have played Bolton, so it’s not like we are going to sit back and watch what they are doing.”
Craig Bellamy is expected to start up front for Cardiff and Rovers midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen is aware of the Welshman’s threat to his former club.
Pedersen played alongside Bellamy at Ewood Park during the 2005/06 season, when he experienced the 33-year-old’s fiery personality at close hand.
Bellamy is well known for having opinions but Pedersen said: “I had no problem with that, you can say whatever you want.
“If I don’t like it, it goes in one ear and out the other! I think it’s the personality, when you go into the game it’s game mode, you go into like a trance.
“I think that’s where you can see people looking so arrogant and the worst guy in the world on the pitch but when you actually meet them outside they’re a nice guy, very calm and very quiet.
“The main thing is when he played for us he was a good player.
“He gives Cardiff things with his pace and his experience.
“But it’s not only about him, the reason they are doing so well is because of the team.”

No score predictions this week but we simply have to win this game to show that we have a realistic and credible chance of finishing in or around the top six this season.
I remember being at Ewood when we were in the 2nd Divison (the first season we came down from the First Division in 66/67) and we absolutely hammered Cardiff that day scoring four goals. Be nice to see a repeat of that....

Satisfaction was not obtained that year as that win kickstarted the Wolves and they went up at our expense. I only hope a big win in the next match or two kickstarts our season.
There is safety in nostalgia. There are no surprises.

You begged for Steve Keans sacking, you begged for an experienced manager but good old Shebby Singh gave you Henning. And what have you achieved since? You should have stuck with Kean.

Think your memory is playing you false, old pal. In those days it was only the top two went up. Wolves and Coventry. I remember Rovers losing a "must win" home game 1-0 to Coventry round about Easter time. A rumbustious centre forward Bobby Gould scored, went on to Arsenal and managed Wales.
Barry Hole was largely a disappoinment and did'nt last long or go on to fame and fortune, though his name rhymned well
"Give us a goal, Barry Hole, Barry Hole"

In the four games against the promoted two we did not score a single goal. In a parallel to today we snapped up a striker from Huddersfield Town who was going to shoot us up. Allan Gilliver. Injuries, as I am sure you will recall, put paid to his Rovers career.
I remember the Barry Hole song. Don't you remember "der der, der der derr..The Blackburn Rovers.. der der derr.."?

My first Rovers v Cardiff was about 1958, a cup replay at Ewood, 2-0 for Rovers played an afternoon because Rovers didn't have floodlights then -we had to skip off school to see the game.
It will be good to see Bellers who had a fabulous season for us under Sparky. Though our best Welshmen remain Mike England (ironic name for a great Taff and who still has a wood business in Hoghton) and the peerless Roy Vernon, if anyone remembers him.

On a sadder note, Rovers demotion in 1965-66 was another "too good to go down" squad, whcih should have immediately gone back up. Unluckily they didn't - though on a top six play-off, as we have now, would have stood a good chance. The squad then fell apart and we become a yo-yo team in the 70s, in and out of 2nd and 3rd. It was in that period that a young Stuart Metcalfe emerged as a good and faithful midfielder.

With keane, you was in a promotion spot, now your in free fall and on your way to more turmoil, oblivion is near!
Maybe you could knock the price of a season ticket down to £50, and pay pensioners to go in, still, I wouldn't sit and watch that excuse of a team even if they did increase the bribes to go on the farm,
You take 600 to man city on a premiership game, and then , against all odds, take 3000 to a championship game at Burnley, tell us again, who's cup final is it?
