Robinson eyes Ewood stay
8:50am Tuesday 4th December 2012 in News
By Chris Flanagan, Sports reporter
Paul Robinson
PAUL Robinson has asked Blackburn Rovers for clarification on his future at Ewood Park – with his agent insisting the goalkeeper still wants to stay providing he is not replaced in January.
Rovers continue to be linked with an attempt to bring Brad Friedel back to the club after making an enquiry before the recent closure of the loan window.
The 41-year-old American played alongside new Rovers boss Henning Berg during his eight-year spell at Ewood Park and has now lost his place at Tottenham to Hugo Lloris, who has started the club’s last five games.
Robinson produced some fine saves in Sunday’s East Lancashire derby draw at Burnley and has been Rovers’ regular keeper since his arrival in 2008.
The former England international is understood to be keen to find out whether he remains in the club’s long-term plans, as speculation over a move for Friedel rumbles on.
Robinson’s agent Rob Segal says his client doesn’t want to leave Ewood Park but admits Robinson’s hand may be forced if Rovers brought in Friedel and then replaced the 33-year-old in goal.
“Paul would be totally happy to stay, he is very happy at Blackburn,” Segal said. “But at this stage of his career Paul wants to be playing football.
“If they want to bring in Brad Friedel that’s their prerogative, Henning Berg might want to bring his own players in. If he played with Brad I can sort of understand it.
“If they can sort something out with Tottenham then we’ll be on our way.”
Reports have suggested that Rovers may contemplate allowing Robinson to leave on a free in January if Friedel arrives, although Segal says he does not know if that is the case.
The keeper has been linked with a return to the Premier League to be reunited with former Rovers boss Sam Allardyce at West Ham, or even his ex-Tottenham manager Martin Jol at Fulham. West Bromwich Albion have also been reported to be interested.
“Those clubs all have goalkeepers so we will have to see what happens and then do what we have to do,” Segal added.
Rovers had attempted to bring in Friedel on loan last month, with a view to permanent deal.
But at the time Tottenham refused to sanction a move, with the veteran keeper still battling with summer signing Lloris for a place in the side.
That tussle has proved more competitive than many initially expected, given that Lloris was signed to be Spurs’ regular keeper.
But the French international has been preferred in recent weeks and, like Robinson, Friedel may be tempted by a move to pursue regular football.
The former Rovers keeper, who was replaced by Robinson at Ewood when he decided to join Aston Villa four years ago, is out of contract at White Hart Lane at the end of the season.

He's by far the best keeper in the league, and much as I loved Friedel, has a few more years ahead of him that Friedel doesn't.
Would love to see Brad come back as a coach, but I think it's serious mistreatment of Robinson if he comes back to the first team.

Robbo is a reasonable keeper that a few clubs would welcome and should therefore have a value.
He will be on good wages so I can only assume the chance to get him off the wage bill comes into the considerations.
Friedel would only be a short term solution but hopefully he can develop the likes of Kean to replace him when the time comes.
If he does come it is likely to be the end of both Robbo and Bobby Mimms.

Robinson has been a loyal servant both towards the club and fans and has produced some good displays as proven last weekend against Burnley - unlike Murphy and some of the other recent buys whose performances have been utter rubbish!!

As much as I liked Friedel when he was at Ewood - to get rid of a 34 year old decent keeper in Robbo and replace him with another 41 year old decent keeper doesn't really make much sense. Especially so when we know that there are Prem clubs interested in Robbo.
And also importantly - where does that leave Bobby Mimms who has been such a good and productive goalkeeper coach for the Rovers over the last few years? Not the way to repay that rare club trait - loyalty - is it?

Personally I would rather stick with Robbo and repay his loyalty throughout his spell with Rovers. Like a lot of players he has his dip in form, like against Millwall, but overall he has provided a reasonable level of consistancy over the last 4 years and potentially has another 5-6 years left in him.
It is said all to often these days, that there is not enough loyality from players. Robbo has to be applauded for the loyality he has shown and should be rewarded by sticking with him. Like you said, would we be any better off short term with Friedel in the net?

I for one think we've been lucky to keep hold of Robbo this year; having to compensate for one of the worst back lines of last season, having to get on the scoresheet yourself just to rescue a point against Wigan in a must-win game and being relegated would test anyone's loyalty to the club, especially when he'd have known there'd be one or two other options if he'd wanted them at the end of it all.

Friedel was arguably the better keeper for us but not to the extent that Robbo should be pushed out to make way for him, especially being 8 years younger than Brad.
I still agree that it wouldn't hurt for him to be a bit trimmer but that can easily be sorted. Who knows, perhaps the reminder that he's got competition might make him spend a bit more time getting fitter.
I think we're lucky, the headline for this could have just as easily read 'Robinson eyes Ewood exit', the defence is almost as sh it as last season at points and how many top-level keepers would continue to pledge their loyalty to that cause?
I say all this as one of Friedel's biggest fans.

Robbo has been a great servant to the club, loves the club and loves the fans....
Problem is he's 2 stone overweight, doesnt like training/gym work, punches too often, gets beaten at the near post and from long range way too frequently.
Brad Friedel on the other hand seems to have improved with age, and is still one of the best keepers in the prem.
Id take Brad over Robbo, especially if he was given a player/coach role. He would be a great influence both on and off the field.

He got top experiance to stay in stopper role and he is doing good. I don't know, why management is going back to another OLD LEG, OLD PAL like Brad Friedel. Good his role is only for coaching. But how many Players/coaching staff u need in this club to heat the bench. look at our David Dunn, always in medical room on in Sub.bench.

It doesn't make a great deal of sense to me to get rid of Robinson. Trading a 33 year old keeper for someone at 41, no matter how good he still is, and how much of a legend doesn't seem sensible. Having said that I'd love to have Friedel back at the club in some capacity, but not at the cost of Robbo.

Robbo is a free agent at the end of the season so to reward his loyalty Rovers are prepared to speed his move by allowing him to move now for free.
Rovers can't afford FrIedel and Robbo so it should suit all concerned if Robbo leaves.
In football loyalty is an over used word people come and go it is the nature of the game, there has to be a very big shake up at Rovers,Kean left a very poor squad and we need to start again.

I know why you want him to stay "meaty", its so he can put his weight behind his hoofs.
Your game of football is very easy to follow. Hoof, flick, smash goal. No need for any midfield just five attackers and a goalkeeper, hang on a minute, isn't that netball?

I'm sure that the sums will come into it. No way of knowing what Friedel would want but we'd get a good keeper and potential coach. Don't forget Robbo is on a pre-Venkys contract.
Robbo is past his best and seems unable to be schooled out of his punts down the field - which makes him a cert for Big Sam.
I appreciate his loyalty during the Keano debacle and perhaps the "free" is a token of appreciation.
Brad can't kick for toffee but has those great basketball throws to well placed defenders. Hopefully a sign from Bergo that wants to play from the back.
I fully agree that they greatest need is for at least a decent ball-holding midfielder. If Brad's not too old, send for Tugay, I bet even now and hundreds of ciggies later, he'd hold the midfield better than Danny (here for a last paycheck) Murphy.

He's by far the best keeper in the league, and much as I loved Friedel, has a few more years ahead of him that Friedel doesn't.
Would love to see Brad come back as a coach, but I think it's serious mistreatment of Robinson if he comes back to the first team.

Henning Berg needs adding to that list as he was the one who made the move for Friedel ffs
lots of dewy eyed sentimentality towards Robbo on this thread, all because he waves at the 'fans'.
Hes overweight, does no gym work, gets beaten at the near post and from distance, and punches instead of catching too much...end of

I think this whole situation is a disgrace and I cant understand the logic. If he wants Brad as a coach fine but to kick out a very good loyal keeper who replaced him is unsettling and madness. Robbo has done well for us, he makes the occassional mistake but what keeper doesnt. He is a fantastic shot stopper this wouldnt surpise me if Shebby is playing games behind Burgs back with this one because Burg stated he already had good keepers at the club. I wouldnt like Shebby around if I was the manager as he seams to want to prove his own point all the time. If any one should move on its him.

Robbos past his best and is certainly carrying too much timber but we need to concentrate on signing some leaders and athleticism through the spine of the team (like we had 2 years ago for example!) rather than a replacement for Robbo (who was absolute top draw on Sunday) if we're gonna give ourselves a glimmer of hope of getting out of this league

Robbo is a decent keeper and we are fortunate to have him. My criticism of Robbo is his ball distribution, but then again I would have thought that a former England keeper could be fairly easily dissuaded from hoofing it downfield, more often than not into touch, at most opportunities. Then again Robbo has no one in midfield whom he can trust not to give away possession. I also think I am correct in saying that Robbo was one of the few players who refrained from talking nonsense about what a wonderful manager Steve Kean was or would have been but for unfortunate circumstances (such as the opposing team turning up!)

I think Friedel will be heading to Ewood but what I cant understand is why we would let Robbo leave on a "free" if that happens.
Its more than likely Berg wants his own people in and its been approved. Sometimes I really do wonder whether the Venkys bashing is more personal than professional.

Dunn on the other hand could lose about the same.I don't think you are old enough, or wise enough, to recall the episode concerning the great "Tubby" Morton, who starred between the sticks for Melchester Rovers. Starved himself half to death to please fashionistas like yourself, and consequently suffered a dramatic loss of form. It was solved only when his teammates, led by the incomparable Roy Race, altered his suit. It was made larger so that it hung off Morton. He threw away the rabbit food you seem to want to bully these players with and hey Presto! a return to form and glory.
If it had not been for Robbo on Sunday we would have been dead and buried by half time. He and CKR and Desperate Dann stood out for me.
Still holding the paper upside down?
Robbos past his best and is certainly carrying too much timber but we need to concentrate on signing some leaders and athleticism through the spine of the team (like we had 2 years ago for example!) rather than a replacement for Robbo (who was absolute top draw on Sunday) if we're gonna give ourselves a glimmer of hope of getting out of this league

Barton has actually turned into a bit of a court jester to be fair. That french accent was f*cking hilarious and only he would have the b0llox to follow that through. He surely had a bet with his mates to carry that one out?
Were too soft and we will never go up as were too nice to play against.
yes we need a some hard men in the center of the park.
we need players with guts and balls.
I think Joey Barton and JERMAINE JONES WOULD BE a PERFECT PAIRING
what do you think..??
Can you imagine Givet attempting a Blackburn accent? I'd pay good money to see that!
The christmas rideout would need a police escort, anyway who was that goalkeeper who was a gun nutter, that american hanaman or something like that, H'ed be okay for the rideout too, any slacking in training and let him deploy taser.

We totaled 4 pts in the Group in 95/96 with our only win 4-1 v Rosenberg and the highlight of all our games being the fight between Batty and Le Saux!
Glad that record has gone...

Glad to see that Man City's miserly 3 points total replaces us as the lowest points total for any English team in a Champions league Group stage.

Could it be that Robbo used to be responsible for the "oh" in moh? :)
