Rovers bringing history to the derby day table
8:09am Thursday 29th November 2012 in News
By Chris Flanagan, Sports reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers go into Sunday’s East Lancashire derby ahead of Burnley in the Championship table, and history has very much been on their side in similar situations in the past.
More often than not Rovers have gone into recent derby games lying above the Clarets in the league ladder.
Only twice in the last eight meetings have Burnley held the highest league position at the time. Those eight meetings have produced seven Rovers wins and one draw.
October 18 2009 Rovers 3 Burnley 2
Burnley did actually go into the weekend of this Premier League fixture on an encouraging 12 points and in ninth position in the table after a flying start under Owen Coyle. Rovers were 16th on seven points and won 3-2.
March 28 2010 Burnley 0 Rovers 1
By the time of the reverse fixture at Turf Moor, Rovers had leapfrogged Burnley and had 38 points. Burnley were in the relegation zone on 24 points and lost 1-0.
February 20 2005 Burnley 0 Rovers 0
Rovers sat 16th in the Premier League, a division above Burnley, who were mid-table in the second tier.
The FA Cup fifth round game finished 0-0.
March 1 2005 Rovers 2 Burnley 1 Premier League Rovers claimed victory in the replay with Morten Gamst Pedersen scoring the winner.
December 17 2000 Burnley 0 Rovers 2
Burnley went into this second tier match marginally ahead of Rovers in the league. The Clarets were eighth on 38 points, with Rovers in ninth on 36 points. But the visitors leapfrogged their rivals in the table with an away win.
April 1 2001 Rovers 5 Burnley 0
By the time the second derby of the season took place Rovers’ promotion challenge was in full gear. Burnley sat 10th on 55 points with Rovers third on 69, moving into the top two with a convincing win.
December 27 1982 Burnley 0 Rovers 1 Rovers were 11th in the Second Division on 26 points, with Burnley second bottom on 14 points. Simon Garner gave Rovers victory.
April 4 1983 Rovers 2 Burnley 1
Rovers were in mid-table on 43 points, with Burnley bottom on 31. Simon Garner scored two penalties.
December 26 1978 Burnley 2 Rovers 1
The fortunes were reversed in 1978/79 in terms of the league table, and significantly this was when Burnley last had derby joy.
In the days of two points for a win, Rovers were third bottom of the Second Division on 16 points – with Burnley eighth on 30. The Clarets won 2-1.
April 14 1979 Rovers 1 Burnley 2
Burnley’s last derby win over Rovers came when they led their rivals in the table by 36 points to 21.
Defeat put Rovers bottom, where they would finish at the end of a disappointing season.

I am going to be going on Sunday more in hope than expectation but lets keep it in perspective - we have done much better away from home and Burnley are no great shakes themselves - a fact that all the Dingles who come on here always ignore.

The new Batistuta (Formica) on the right tries hard, but his defending is pitiful and he contributes very little to the attack. Difficult to know why the managers persist with him. I would play Lowe on the right, Pedersen on the left with Murphy and Etutu in the middle, perhaps not so creative but far more solid.
Richards and Rhodes playing up front. King looked lost out on the left in the first half hour, first time I've seen Richards last night and he looks a much better player than King.
Rochina is still just a substitute, he will improve once he realises that he has team mates.

I just hope Henning Berg has a more educated and knowledgeable view of his players capabilities than most of us fans have....
But saying all that - I think Vukevic should be in the side in place of Formica, Nunes should be on one of the wings and I would have Gomes or KR playing alongside Rhodes. Pederson or Lowe should start instead of Etuhu.
Its not easy this football manager lark.....

Corners that dont get pass the first man, people who cant pass 5 yards in front of themselves, long balls up to Rhodes who when he controls them doesnt get the support needed because we have two lazy **** in CM

I am sure they will go into the match wanting to show the fans of both sides that they are the best. That they can rise to the occasion and that they will make sure that the Rovers fans leave the ground in high spirits, leaving the Burnley fans to once again run amok in their town.

I agree with all except Givet for Hanley, I think it should be Givet in for Adam Henley. Because Henley is terrible!!! Hanley is class he has and When you have Man utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Totenham all in for him!!!

I'm not the one seeing the players on a daily basis so I think I'm out of my depth in questioning the team and formation but you can't help but think there is a better way than this.
Everyone can see that Rhodes on his own with Formica being the man to supply him just isn't working. The defence looks lost at times and the midfield is just a bunch of weak links.
The football we are playing certainly looks better than when SK was pulling the strings but we are still incredibly weak in various areas and that can't change until January, whoever is in charge.

tbh, The only thing that I would not forgive is a repeat of last nights performance from both the players and the manager.
Defeat is never an easy pill to swallow, especially if the performance is as dire and woeful as last night, Losing honourably in a hard fought battle that gives the respect the derby deserves would at least raise some consolation that it wasnt for lack of effort.
But of course we won't be losing..

Yes you have as good a chance as any to win this game, after all we are way way short of what we had over the last 20 years but we still have players worthy of destroying any team in this league...... I'm not holding my breath though! Unless Berg drops the light weight mincers in midfield for some power and aggression we're gonna get a fookin good hiding!!

Apparently all that's going to change though on Sunday according to the string vest brigade. The bitterness and anger will reach an all new level at Scaffold Moor as the sh1ttest Rovers team for many a year might just once again shatter the dreams of all the easily pleased desperados from Envy FC.

Givet must start
We need to play 2 up front at least in home games
Murphy needs to sit on the bench till he can get his act together
Formica shouldn’t play in the same side as Rochina. I prefer Rochina but that's another argument.
The point I'm making is HB as had 6 games now and still can't seem to grasp what most of us agree on. When B Orrful was shipped out I thought, here we go, a manager who’s not afraid to do what is necessary. But now! It's almost the same starting 11 each game and leaving the subs far too little time to make a difference. We were ok in the Hudd, Birm, Posh games and I understand we need to keep a settled side but each game is different and that's why we have a squad.
Goodness knows I want HB to be successful but if he can’t get the basics sorted then we will never see the PL again. Let’s face it, the way we’re playing will see us come straight back down should the miracle happen and we get promoted this season.
I know it's only 6 games and totally unfair to criticise HB but should the unthinkable happen on Sunday, apart from the pain that would bring, we could find ourselves just 3 points off the being in the bottom 3.
Get your finger out HB, kick some backsides and get us on a winning run, starting with Bunleh. I know you inherited some poor players but played in their correct positions, with proper instruction and a lot better fitness we may have a chance of the play-offs.

Its quite sad really isn't it, that you have to measure your success in this way,
Question, if you win, will you have a plaque made have the team paraded in an open top bus. Maybe you will engrave a trophy and put it in your empty cabinet.
