Berg disappointed with pain of defeat
7:53am Thursday 29th November 2012 in News
By Alex James, Assistant Sports Editor
ROVERS boss Henning Berg will be hoping Sunday’s East Lancashire derby heralds a change in fortune for his side after they suffered back to back defeats.
Berg’s men were beaten 2-1 by Bolton Wanderers at Ewood Park last night leaving the new boss still searching for his first home win in charge.
And he will hope the tasty prospect of a trip to Turf Moor will earn a victory to put his side back among the promotion contenders.
Rovers were outplayed for much of the contest against the Trotters with an early goal from Kevin Davies and a second on the hour from Chung Yong Lee putting the game beyond doubt despite Jordan Rhodes’ late intervention.
Berg was naturally disappointed and said: "To start the game like we did was very surprising.
"We gave them too much space.
"It's nowhere near where we want to be."
But there were words of comfort for Rovers from Bolton boss Dougie Freedman.
“Fair play to Blackburn who kept on going. They tested us in the last 15 minutes,” he said.

GOOD PLAYERS make GOOD TEAMS and BAD PLAYERS make BAD TEAMS !
So with that basic truism in mind - STOP PICKING CR@P PLAYERS, match after match !!!!!
We all know its a terrible squad but don't make your job even harder than it already is by picking total dross (DM, DE, MF) every week whilst leaving better (well at least competantly profesional, BETTER players on the bench - GG, MGP, SV, CCR, NG etc etc).
If you do not or cannot understand or IMPLEMENT this single basic managerial point then there is NO FUTURE for you as a football manager and your tenure as BFRC manager is going to be very short and not very sweet !
So come on Henning - we are all behind you but you have to start doing your job to a basic, competant level, preferably on Sunday !

He retained the same defence that has not kept a clean sheet since he arrived, he kept the same central midfield partnership that has not worked in 19 games, and again started with Rhodes isolated on his own up front.
His substitutes Lowe, Pederson and Kazim-Richards did improve the team late on but they should have been introduced much earlier as it was abundantly clear early in the 1st half that things were not working.
Rochina had a very poor game (but he was not on his own) and I do not understand why we are persisting with Formica on the right.
Not for the first time this season we did not look as fit as the opposition and this can probably be traced back to the club dispensing with the services of our fitness coach last season.
Bolton’s appetite to work hard and press the ball high up the park was in direct contrast to our slow play.
I simply do not believe that Murphy and Etuhu have the energy to chase the ball down anymore.
We need players who are prepared to battle for the club.
At the moment I feel apprehensive about Sunday and have doubts whether Berg can motivate or select the right team for the derby game.
It is now just 5 points from a possible 18 which is more like relegation form.
I never understood what in Berg’s management record persuaded the Board to appoint him as manager when clearly his fellow Norwegian OGS had a much better CV.
By the way, Molde have just retained the Norwegian League title.
In closing I would like to ask the club a couple of questions.
1) Where were the 7 Portuguese players we signed in the summer last night?
2) And who at the club was responsible for signing them all?

Please Henning listen to the fans. Black got it right, drop that useless lump Murphy and his Fulham sidekick. We stunk in miodfield. How many passes did Murphy complete without giving the ball away. His one golden chance to score and redeem himself. He passes it out instead.
We need some speed on the wings. And fire in the bellies. Olson doesn't sit comfortable at the back. Get Givet back there.
And for god sake play 2 up front especially at home. Rhodes cannot do it all without some help

To some extent we have to get used to a style of play that allows no time on the ball and by playing 2 up front the midfield will be much less crowded. Because neither Rochina or Formica cross the ball in to the box enough we can't have both in the team at the same time.

I would start with the team that finished last night.

THE OWNERS - beneath contempt - no further comment!
THE BOARD - surely the most dysfunctional bunch of incompetents ever to run a football club. The only consolation lately is that the comedian in charge, Shebby has kept quiet! The real Three Stooges could do better.
THE MANAGER - I like HB and want him to succeed, but are we watching history repeat itself with an untried and unproven manager? The question has to be asked - was he just the cheap option?
THE COACHES - taxi for Black and Hendry!
THE PLAYERS - This has got to be the worst squad in 25 years, overburdened with has beens and never willbes. The disastrous transfer policy of the last 2 years is coming home to roost, with a squad ill equipped for the Championship, let alone the pipe dream of the Premiership!
I fear we are on a downward slope to oblivion, with no-one in position to do anything about it.
I hate to say it, but Blackburn Rovers as we have known and loved them for the previous 135 years no longer exist. RIP

He needs time. The squad have been allowed to get unfit -which is completely reprehensible and inexcusable. He's clearly had a positive mental impact on the players. He just needs a bit of time to sort it all out, and hopefully bring in someone who'll battle in midfield in January.
His team selection seems a bit naive -he's picking our 'classiest' players and he needs to ensure that the squad contains some ballsy, tenacious players do battle in this nasty league...

For me, we need to pick a 4-4-2 formation with Nuno Gomez up top to complement Jordan Rhodes and two quick wingers (Fabio Nunez and Simon Vucevic) to whip crosses into them. We need to get rid of Murphy and Etuhu who are both going through the motions and get in two combative fit centre midfielders (we have one in Jason Lowe) to boss the game and feed the wingers. We also need a solid centre half who has been there and done it who will organise the back 4 – I would make this new player captain.
So, in January, we need to go out and buy and a good midfielder and a good centre half. We don’t really need anyone else if you stick to the above formation and tactics. With the right service, Rhodes and Nunez will score 50 goals between them in this league!
I know it won’t happen, but my 2 fringe players from the Premiership that I’d go for would be Carragher from Liverpool and Whitehead from Stoke.
If Berg is actually picking the team then it looks like he's clueless I'm afraid. If Shebby is picking the team based on the content of players contracts - which we know has happened previously under these owners, then we will end up in League 1 at this rate.
If it is down to Berg's lack of managerial know-how, then the fans will turn if results don't improve and hopefully we'll see a few "HUGHES COME AND SAVE US" banners at Ewood and he'll be in the hot seat to get us in the play offs.
10:58am Thu 29 Nov 12
owd nick says...
Strange we have scored more goals away from home, and only lost one game so far, could that have something to do with the strange sort of negative attitude at Ewood?
Lowe must start on Sunday even if its just to give some protection to the defence which has had none at all for the last two games.
Pedersen has to start because without him we don't have a single player who can take free kicks or corners, even flaming throw ins.
I am not a great fan of Kazim Richards only because I am not convinced he is a team player, but he has to start because he is experienced, has pace can hold up and head a ball.
As far as Berg is concerned we have to give him a chance irrespective of what happens Sunday because these are not his players, he's doing what he can with a miss mash of fancy dan footballers who really don't have the heart to play for this club.
Keans crap need to be paid off and shipped out as soon as possible.
The transfer window and what happens after is Bergs chance to show what he can do.
If he fails, or isn't supported as promised then that will be it for me, I am not going to continue paying good money for season tickets and sitting there watching second rate dross like that while freezing my gonads off much longer.
This is my 40th season as a Rovers fan, 20+ of them as a ST holder, hopefully it isn't my last.

Facts are facts and they were as clear to each fan on the terrace last night and echoed in the jeers and boos what we were all thinking. The initial lineup wasnt working, so why no change in the first half? is there a written rule that you can't make substitutions early in the game?
The fact that Etuhu and Murphy were having a woeful game and they were still trotted out after half-time was mind blowing. We could have avoided that second goal just taking those two has-beens pff the field. Where was Berg's judgement? what was he thinking?
I think all will agree that losing to Bolton is no biggie in the greater scheme of things, they are a respectable side who always present us with a challenge and have had the better results from us in recent years, but it was the absolute clusterfluck of lacklustre performance by the team who were just man-handled up to 75 mins by the Trotters and Berg's lack of experience and tactical prowess that shoowed when he finally did make a change - too late after the second goal.
Honeymoon is well and truly over Mr Berg and if we lose on Sunday, you may well lose the fans.

On looking at both teamsheets I hardly recognised any players. Given our squad as it is ( yes we can mourn the player that have left) we should still be romping in this league, Top 3 at least.
If only the clown like Venkys and the idiotic Shabby had not gone for the cheap option with Berg.
An experienced manager would have had us winning matches by now not labouring to dreadful home defeats.
After a week or two of feeling a small ember of recovery I now feel pessimistic and desperate again.

And still he couldnt get a decent touch on the ball. Alright he got an assist for the goal but the guy has ZERO ball skills, he gets his head to the ball and fluffs it and shoots from 40 yards.... he dosen't ever deserve to play for Rovers and yet I can see him starting on Sunday because Berg and 90% of the Rovers fans thought he made an impact on Wednesday night.
Fact of the matter is, WE NEED 2 UPFRONT. The fact that CKR looked good when he came on was only down to the fact that we were crying out for a player in that position.
Totally unnerved by Berg's subs. We went 2-0 down and he took off Etuhu and put Lowe on?!?! I was really expecting a formation shift at that point, retaining Ruben and adding to the strike force.
Can someone please tell Ruben that:
A) He is not Messi
B) He stands about a 5% chance of beating a man
C) He cant shoot from 40 yards
D) Try to pass to Rhodes instead of trying to be the hero CONSTANTLY.

I wouldn't say Simon is the missing ingredient to turn us into a winning side, what I would say is that playing him instead of Danny 'I'll get better' Murphy and Dickson 'Where's the ball, oh, in the back of our net' Etuhu would be a good plan... Definitely a starter before either of them.
Kazim might have played well last night to get an assist, is this because Berg told him he'd be dropped if he carried on being greedier than an american in an all you can eat buffet? Or just 1 good performance game out of 10?
We have Gomez, Rochina, King and Kazim... 4 people that should be alongside Rhodes rather than sitting behind him every game... Either a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2 is needed, preferably a 4-4-2.
I'm far from giving up on Berg, all I'm saying is that a good manager will look back at the last games and make changes accordingly... NOT play the same tactics if the players cant get used to them.

I didn't renew my season ticket like many on here as a token of my distaste for Keano, Venkys and the travesty of a club that Rovers have become.
I thought that Rafael Benitez, Redknapp etc was a silly game for fans with a bit of time on their hands and no sense of reality.
Given who we might of landed, I am quite content that the job went to an outstanding former player who actually cares about Rovers, realising that he has a tough task dealing with one of football most dysfunctional management/owners and is saddled with a foot-in-mouth fool as "global adviser" and poor squad of players lacking any motivation or fitness.
So out of solidarity,I went along for the five pounds deal.
I've been watching Stanley this season and last night against Bolton I saw scarcely the hint of effort as a team, that I see at Stanley every week.
There's a square at the heart of Rovers - Dann and Hanley at the back, Etuhu and Murphy in midfield, who have the combined mobility of a tortoise on a zimmerframe. Dann and Hanley are just clumsy, but try, Etuhu is just clumsy, I never recall anyone so out of place on a football field, he looks like a displaced body builder, or boxer; and Murphy - well , he's past it and is clearly padding out his last big pay cheque for as long as it lasts. Bergo was constantly urging Murphy and Etuhu to press forward and engage the Bolton midfield but might as well been speaking Norwegian.
We're a mini QPR, too many players on good salaries, no interest, no loyalty, not going to be transferred and scarcely bothering.
They need a kick up the backside, Sparky might have done it - though sadly out-of-character he seems to have failed to do so at QPR. 'Arry just might do it for QPR.
My fear is that Bergo - who is surely our last chance - is perhaps too nice a guy, hope I'm wrong.
I can't see Venkys holding - the best solution is that Bergo manages to impose some dignity, but Venkys and rent-a-gob realise there's no future for them and go - then perhaps we can have a fans' buy out.

There is so much wrong I don’t know where to start
How can a manager persist with the same system and players after a 0-2 home defeat?
Berg changed nothing apart from bringing in King who is new to the squad with little experience
The system does not work! Etuhu and Murphy do not work!
Formica cannot play on the right and Dann and Hanley are not our best centre halves
The whole set up is wrong, what the hell do they do all week?
Why has Berg not brought in his own coaching staff?
Nothing has changed apart from SK leaving (not sacked)
The whole setup is full of failures; there are no winners at the club
Make Givet captain he is the only one with any balls, bring in Vukavic and MGP
And play Richards up front (im far from a fan but he looked more effective than King)
The club is a wreck, with Black, Hendry, Singh and as much as I want Berg to succeed his credentials are hardly inspiring
Venkys are the problem, the buck stops at the top, I mean what is the transfer policy?
Who the hell bought all those Portuguese players? Where are they?
