Blackburn Rovers fans launch trust with sights set on buying club
3:50pm Monday 26th November 2012 in News
Darwen MP Jake Berry signs up to the Rovers Trust at its launch at Blackburn Cathedral
BLACKBURN Rovers fans gathered for the official launch of a supporters’ trust which is hoping to be able to buy the club from Venky’s.
The Rovers Trust, backed by MPs and former players, has already raised £3million from fans buying shares.
The group met at Blackburn Cathedral on Saturday to unveil its campaign strategy, which is to obtain full, or part, ownership of the club.
Trust co-chairman Wayne Wild, also a director at Darwen’s WEC group, said: “The meeting was really just to give everybody an update as to where we are at. We wanted to gain more membership, inform everybody what the current stage is, and talk about a pre-share offer.
“We also wanted to tell people what the overall aim was, which is for fans to have a shared ownership in the club.”
Mr Wild said the trust had come together after the Blackburn Rovers Supporters’ Investment Trust, and the Blackburn Rovers Supporters’ Trust, merged.
He said: “By uniting, we can concentrate on making as many supporters as possible members of Rovers Trust.
“This gives us the ideal platform to persuade members, supporters, and the business community, to raise enough capital to buy the club.”
Venky’s have previously denied the club is for sale.

Kean quit he did not get sacked, this after bringing the club into disrepute on more than one occasion! Why
Venkys are still not communicating strongly with the fans. Why
The staff who the Venkys have taken on and are still there leave a lot to be desired (Hendry as an example) Why
Singh stated they had some quality managers applying for the job yet they give it to an inexperienced one (HB has my backing having said that) who rang up a couple of days after Kean left and asked for the job, two managers with drew there applications, why?
No we have got rid of some of the problems at Ewood (Kean) but there are still plenty there.
No matter what anyone says we have lost a lot of fans who will never return until the Venkys have gone full stop, this us why such people are still trying to get OUR club back.
Good luck to them I say.

More like £50 to £100 million is required if we are to get back to the PL.
Where are Rovers fans going to get that sort of money and will they be expected to dip their hands in their pockets every time the coffers start to run dry?
I have my £1000 put to one side but I will be damned if I am parting with a single penny until they get their act together, because I am not going to get it back and in all honesty I can't really afford it.

Also the investment amount needs to be made more flexible so as to perhaps encourage those Rovers fans who do not have such large amounts of money to invest but who still wish to be part of the Trust.
It is (to paraphrase a couple of Rovers managers) a very positive step that can help secure the long term future of our club.

Take away the fairweather fans, the premiership glory boys and those that cant stand the idea of asians owning the club and you are left with a mere thousand or so who are boycotting because they object to how the club is run and not by whom, and possibly a few hundred that have lost interest altogether.
Lets face it, promotion is the only way we'll get the majority of the fans back. Everyone else who never boycotted or vowed to return on Keans exit are, to a large extent, already back. The crowd may be lacking at Ewood park, but I dont believe relegation would have left us with more than 15k fans had Venkys or Kean never been in the picture and bfs had relegated us.
I dont lose sleep about those fans who didnt return. I would rather the team concentrate on improving their play and let me and thee the true supporters who are attending worry about creating the atmosphere to spur them on.
As for the Trust, Wayne Wild and co, whilst hard working and dedicated, must realise by now the most they can expect is for Venkys to allow them to have a voice. The idea of one day owning a club as big as Rovers is deluded as it is frugal. Sadly a thousand or so stay-aways pledging will a few million translates to very little in this day and age. Its likely to be counter-productive and disruptive at a time when we are just starting to see some positives,

This is the only way forward long term for the Rovers to try and ensure that the club is never in this situation again. Granted things are a little less muddy now that Kean has gone and Berg is here and we have some semblance of order at the club - but the Venkys are still not making themselves and their aims known to the Rovers fans - so we cannot know anything (only fear) about what the future holds under the V's.
The Rovers Trust if successful could become a 'joint-owner' of the club (if Venkys agree) or even a full owner but this would take some years and need a lot more investors on board before that could happen. But the point is that this can actually happen. Just not overnight.
It already has happened at Portsmouth (though they have gone into administration twice before it became a reality). Portsmouth are the biggest club that is owned by a Supporters Trust.
Exeter City are currently the highest-placed side in the Football League that are mutually owned by supporters, as are AFC Wimbledon and Wycombe Wanderers, both of League Two.
Swansea City in the Premier League are 'part-owned' by fans, with the Swans Trust holding a 20% share in the Welsh club, while other teams outside the top four divisions including Wrexham, Chester and FC United of Manchester have also undergone a similar process in recent years.
So maybe the Swansea model is the one that the Rovers Trust will aim for at least initially? This model would give the RT/Rovers fans a powerful voice in the running of the club and allow for proper transparency in the way the club is run.
It would help restore some of the family values that have always been associated with the Rovers in the past and also IMO bring some of the missing fans.

One word of caution Port Vale was purchased by the fans and went bust due to a lack of money on a ongoing basis so those fans who purchased shares have found them to be worthless after going into Administration. Do not wish to be pessimistic but an awful lot of of money would be required and would depend entirely on being in the Premiership.
I think that the new Rovers Trust should set out their intent and plans in a special LET supplement perhaps and also make it available for download. Then more Rovers fans will be able to understand just what the practical aims of the RT are and what achievements can be gained/made and how these will benefit the club and the fans who invest. 30000 x 1000 = 30 million
So even though I'm massively over estimating... We would be looking at 20+ million just to buy the club from venky's, considering we was buying it with the current squad and facilities. This leaves us with, lets say, 10 million left to spend on players (which in my opinion at least another 5m is needed at the mo).
Left with 5 million in the championship... Players wages, overheads for the ground etc would eat that up in a season if we included gate money for the 30,000 fans. The championship relies mainly on the team doing good business, we are far from a profitable team, light years at the moment.
Where we are now, we are operating at massive losses, we've spent more than a good few premiership teams this season to get back up there and we're paying near enough the same as a low end premiership team is on wages too.
Deluded is not the word to describe this futile plan to buy a club with a 'NOT FOR SALE' sign.
If you want to support your team, buy a season ticket, forget who's pocket it goes in and get down to the games to roar on the players like the rest of us proper fans, I say proper fans because you have to 'support' your team to be a fan, 'support' being the key word here, look it up in a dictionary!
So if everything does go t1ts up after you ploughing your money in every week to watch Rovers play? At least you did your bit to try and help! Because offering £1000 to a never going to happen pledge is doing nobody any favours and just rocks a boat thats steadying! Just think, thats 4 seasons of football!!
Now if we had 100,000 fans offering £1000, I'd be the first to the front of the queue... So get real if you think this is a good idea!!

Its likely to be counter-productive and disruptive at a time when we are just starting to see some positives, moh wrote:Not sure if these fans could pull this off but let's look at why they are still trying- Kean quit he did not get sacked, this after bringing the club into disrepute on more than one occasion! Why Venkys are still not communicating strongly with the fans. Why The staff who the Venkys have taken on and are still there leave a lot to be desired (Hendry as an example) Why Singh stated they had some quality managers applying for the job yet they give it to an inexperienced one (HB has my backing having said that) who rang up a couple of days after Kean left and asked for the job, two managers with drew there applications, why? No we have got rid of some of the problems at Ewood (Kean) but there are still plenty there. No matter what anyone says we have lost a lot of fans who will never return until the Venkys have gone full stop, this us why such people are still trying to get OUR club back. Good luck to them I say.midas wrote: Do they have £3 million in the bank or "pledges" from fans that, if the opportunity arises, they will contribute? . Who are they planning to share the ownership with? the Venkeys? . what sort of 5 of the share capital are they aiming for?did six people turn up for meeting or were there more. Also six months ago more people would have probably been interested. The club have moved on and the situation is different now.

I was interested when the idea was first muted but lost that interest once BRSIT merged with BRST.
And just what do they intend to buy with £3 million?
Also Venky's come from a totally different hierarchial culture which is not used to having its motives questioned or even worse having to explain itself to its minions.
They apparently saw Rovers as a vehicle to expand Football in the sub continent which if successful won't be a bad thing, I think the population of India is over 1 billion now, think of the benefits of 1% of that number wearing the blue and white if they were even slightly successful.
At the end of the day we don't have a choice do we, support our club or walk away, personally I have actually enjoyed most of the games I have seen so far this season and I won't walk away whatever league we are in.
Just hoping I have a big grin on my face late Sunday afternoon.

We were made an offer we couldn't refuse for Jones, pity he hasn't played since because he would be an England regular now.
Hoilett was never going to stay at Ewood even if we stayed in the PL, and ran his contract into the ground, have we received anything for him yet?
Samba was whinging and whining even when Lardarse was in charge, he was too good for us and wanted away, ended up somewhere in outer Mongolia or similar.
Like it or not the name of the game for clubs like Rovers is finding raw talent and developing it, or taking a risk on someone like Rhodes and selling them on when the price is right.

I am not a financial genius but even I know that even if Venky's were willing to sell they would look to recover their expenditure as a minimum, and that is significantly more than £3 million.
And if the target is the PL, which both groups are adamant is the case, then we would need to look at an awful lot more money than either party have hat their disposal.
And Venky's have significantly more than Mr Wilds group.
The PL is a billionaires club now, clubs like Sunderland, QPR, Stoke, etc have splashed the cash so to speak, yet tonight's game is a relegation 6 pointer for Sunderland and QPR.
If Mr Wild can get some serious backers who are willing to take the financial risks, buy us out and drive us to the PL, then I will chuck my paltry sum in the pot.

We seem to be in a 'quiet phase' right now with only our new manager really making any comments from the club - heck even the Shebmeister is quiet right now. But I guess that is how it should be (the managers voice should be the loudest and most often heard) at a 'normal club' - but then again we are anything but 'normal' if the last two years are anything to go by. So we still hope (in vain mostly) and wait for some words of truth and wisdom from our owners as to what they see as the future of our club.
The immediate future question has been answered and well communicated via various mouths - and that is they expect Rovers to win promotion and get back to the prem at the end of this season. That is Bergs directive, any less and who knows what his future holds?
It what they see as the long term future of the club that is the 64000 dollar question. That is what I am curious about and it is one question they will need to answer at the end of this season come what may.

I personally think there was some naivety involved but I also think that Keanio and other forces in the form of 'advisers' played them along because of that naivety.
But they surely are not naive now after all that has happened. So I cannot understand the wall of silence that still exists between them and the fans.
Do they realize how much they hurt the club and fans and because of that are they are they afraid of the fans reactions?
Will they feel 'safe' if and when we win promotion and then will they come and say 'sorry' for the last two years and explain to us this is how we will make sure this can never happen again? Hard to say but stretch the imagination a bit and that could just be possible....only time will tell!

That may just be coincidence, but definitely needs to be investigated to discount a corrupt network in operation. . FOOTNOTE: I believe Sebastian Coe is interested in running for the FIFA job.Keen O to Get Kean Out wrote: Venkys wont sell till all assets are stripped and the club is on its knees, this is our last season as a decent side, then we will demise further as we were in the 1970,s once Venkys give up and damage is to far gonecheer up, its not our last season as a decent side. Venkys have bought Rhodes,Etuhu, Murphy etc. All ticket sales probably just about pay the three players wages. The club has turned corner and with Berg as manager things are on the up.
As for us having " one of the best squads ever assembled in the Championship"; most expensive or highest paid maybe but that is a loooooooong ways from being the same thing.
Unfortuately, the Kean legacy lives on. And will do for some time.

Rovers have just been stuffed 2-0 at home by Millwall and have accrued a pitiful 5 points out of a possible 15 under Berg's stewardship...and this with one of the best squads ever assembled in the Championship. . Out of Berg's last 15 games as a "football manager", he as managed to achieve the grand total of 7 points out of a possible 45. . The best thing for the Trust to do is to contact the Sports Minister and demand an investigation into the REAL owners / and their running of the Football club - as well as corruption in the game. Any opinions or beliefs based an a book of unsubstantiated ramblings by supposed knowledgeable men (note: no women) carefully edited by similarly supposed knowledgeable men (note: no women again) can't be healthy. Well at least we had Jeremy Paxman & Mark Thompson to act in our best interests for BBC's Newsnight Programme. They should have been positioned appropriately in order to sort it all out and make sure there was no corruption.....
