Rovers beaten by Millwall
4:55pm Saturday 24th November 2012 in News
By Alex James, Assistant Sports Editor
Two Millwall blockbusters saw Rovers slip to defeat as the Lions won 2-0 at Ewood Park.
Chris Wood lashed home a 20 yard right footed effort 19 minutes from time before James Henry scored a similar thunderbolt in the final minute to end Rovers' three game unbeaten run.
The result was harsh on Henning Berg's side who gave as good as they got in an even contest, particularly in a second half where they were the better team.
But the hosts created few clear cut chances with Martin Olsson and debutant Josh King having the best of them. Olsson's drive was palmed over by Millwall keeper David Forde, while King almost made an immediate impact after coming off the bench but Forde kept out his curling effort.
At the other end Andy Keogh and Wood were always a threat for Millwall - who saw three goals chalked off for offside.
And they displayed a clinical side that Rovers were lacking to seal the points.
The result saw Berg's men slip out of the Championship play-off places.

Their first was a cracking finish but how often he does that in a season explains why he is a Millwall player.
*
Until Rovers has a settled team they cannot impose their indiividual quality on well-drilled opposition.
*
Playing too many featherweights and exotics against rough and tough sides only works if we let the ball do the work and let the opposition chase shadows. Otherwise, we will be bullied like today.

Rovers tried hard but created little too often they were passing along the back and then because they were quickly closed down it was a long high ball - Rhodes is not that type of player an upfront alone man
Rochina has quality but decision making too often lets him down. At the back Hanley was left for dead for the first goal, no one would doubt his effort but he lacks pace and often awareness that a quality defender needs.
Whilst it is good for HB to keep an unchanged team that is no reason not to change the team when they are not creating - there was a really strong bench this afternoon and yet to leave Vukevic there until 6 minutes from time was poor judgement. Rovers are not helped by the standard of refereeing in this league where to come through and take everything seems acceptable not to mention shirt tugging and bodychecking of the Italian variety.
Reality is we are some way off being a team who can challenge for promotion and if we did get there we are not as good as QPR which says everything.
Berg needs time and if today is anything to go by - lets start to build a team for the future that can win promotion and stay there even if there are some poor results along the way

..apart from Shebby, The Snake, Singh of course who will be busy looking for our next manager having demanded an immediate return to the premiership from Berg.
It was also great to see all the " I won't be back at Ewood again until Kean has gone" fans back again. With our lowest gate of the season I can only assume that the attendance was dragged down by Kean's supporters boycotting the club?

But if Rovers want to learn from this defeat then every player needs to get a copy of game and admit to themselves that Millwall's way is how we should play.

I have predicted all season we will finish mid-table and I'll never change that prediction whilst we're playing players like -
ETUTHU - This guy really is the worst senior central midfielder we have seen down Ewood for the last 25 years - he has absolutely NOTHING to his game at all and must make DM job almost impossible.
Formica - £3m ??? - what is this guys best position ?? - he's as fast as a 3 legged tortoise with gout - adds absolutely NOTHING to the team.
"Airfix" Ollson - Trys hard and has pace but there is NO end product to this lads game - I call him "airfix" cos he's a cheap, plastic imitation of the real thing.
Also, Givet needs to come in at CH - he is our best CH and a warrior and MUST be picked (personally I would make him captin as well).
We actually have players that could come in an improve the team if Berg dropped these light weights - King for Airfix, Vukevic for Formica and well, ANYONE for Etuthu.
To be fair to HB the mess that JA and SK have left after 18 months of buying total DROSS (and filling their own pockets) has left the squad totally over-bloated and under-served in the quality department - all those Rovers fans who keep spouting that this is the best squad in the championship need to wake up to reality FAST.
Most expensive - YES, best - NO (the 2 arn't the same thing Shebby).
I personally think it would be a disaster for us to go up this season as this squad needs a complete clearout of all the Kean losers and a proper, motivated, quality team needs re-building (virtually) from scratch.
Could you really imagine this sqaud in the PL next season ?? - we would get completly mullered EVERY week.

And as for those with short memories who dont like my 'OUT WITH'S' let me remind you - Kean resigned, he wasnt sacked and if he hadnt resigned he probably would still be in the Managers seat under the current abysmal Administration.
Berg needs to bring in is own backroom staff and get shut of Keans cohorts including if possibly Shaw Agnew Singh and especially Black and Hendry then you might see some improvement in performance and more importantly attendances - the Venkeys and Co have a lot to do to bring back the missing thousands and Keans reignation was only part of the equation of which they played no part!!

Once HB can spend a few quid in January, which he hopefully can, it will start to get interesting. Right now we don't have the team. We have players, but certainly not a team. We are still living in the aftermath of Kean and until HB can truly make it his team nothing will change.
Personally don't think we will get promoted this season. I would definitely not be surprised if it took 2 or 3 season, if at all. If promotion is what we want then those 10,000 or so fans need to get back down here and support the team. Kean is gone, we have what we want. It's now time to get back down there to give ourselves the best chance for promotion.

We have to remember thou over the next few months that the state of the squad (and hence) results is down to SK and JA - really HB can't do that much until next Sept as there is so much dross in this squad that it'll take 2 transfer windows to get rid of it all and bring in his own players.
SS saying that promotion this season is a "must" is not helpfull and shows his lack of understanding of the size of the problems (just on the playing side) that we currently face after 2 years of Venkys ownership and 18 months of Kean reaping his havock.
The re-building job that is needed is absolutely huge - I'm amazed how few Rovers fans still understand this.
(eg - we have Nuno Gomez on HUGE wages - but how good a signing is he actually ?? - couldnt get in the Braga team for last 2 years, big earner but can't possibly play all 46 games as he's too old and we've got him for 2 YERS ! (Millwall on the other hand signed the upand coming Chris Wood on loan as their striker - he scored 14 goals last season, mainly in Championship, won't be a big drain on wages and is a player thats getting better every year, he is young, fit and eager - who is the better signing ?).
And you can go through the Rovers squad, its full of has beens on huge wages (Dunn, Pederson, Gomes, etc) or never beens like "Airfix Ollson, 6 Portugese youngsters, Denis Irwin or total dross like DE, Desperate Dann or MF.

Now some games are going to be discounted ( Bolton next, for example )
it will be cheaper to buy tickets for all the games in the second half of the season on a match by match basis than buy a half season ticket for JW centre.
It is a lot cheaper to buy a half season ticket for all the other three stands than buy match by match - as it should be.
Why on earth would anyone buy a half season ticket for JW cente and which idiot at the club is responsible for this policy which in the end will bring in less revenue and will result in an even lower gate?

About Rovers we are well down to about 14,000 crowds. Our average is slightly more than Burnley and Preston.Rovers average in Premiership was over 23,000 2011/2012.The 10,000 fans who are staying must come back and support our beloved Blackburn Rovers FC.We have no other choice but to get behind this new manager Henning Berg and Venkys.I don't think Rovers will be promoted until about another two years, unless more funds made avaliable when the transfer windows open again.

J.C - Rishton wrote:Hi JC your comments are spot on. The midfield is carrying too many lightweights. We cannot play Murphy and Etuhu so we must replace Etuhu as he is not mobile enough. We also cannot afford Formica and Rochina to play in the same team. Insufficient pace or movement. Marcus Olson works hard enough without any result. We are paying the price for Kean's extravagance in bulk buying a lot of midfielders without any careful thought.
I'm afraid the honeymoon is over for Henning. We despatched a pub team last week with ease but a well organised, motivated team was too much for us. 2-0 may have been harsh but they showed us what WORK-RATE, COMMITMENT and decent crossing really is. I have predicted all season we will finish mid-table and I'll never change that prediction whilst we're playing players like - ETUTHU - This guy really is the worst senior central midfielder we have seen down Ewood for the last 25 years - he has absolutely NOTHING to his game at all and must make DM job almost impossible.

Millwalls goalkeeper had a cracking game today maybe Robbo could watch the match back and pick up a few tips. I also think Pedersen, givet and Vukevic should be back in the squad, Peds takes better corners and free kicks, Givet gives 100% in defence and Vukevic had an outstanding game against Birmingham and then got dropped.
Come on Henning we need to win the next two local derbys!!!

Millwall were definatly the best team to come to Ewood list year.
Rhodes totally isolated
Another shocking performance from Rochina. I've never seen a player who can control a ball with such skill and make so much space for himself and then always play possibly the worst ball possible. If he does actually pass, he either overhits the ball or hits the ball with such power that no-one can control it. He must be dropped. Gomez has shown he can score and create oportunities in this league - Get him up front with Rhodes
Murphy and Etu also very poor again, would much prefer MGP in there
Givet needs to come back in the defence.

How often does he do it ? - thats his 8th goal in 13 appearances for Millwall.
Our Loanee (prob on 3 or 4 times the money) CKR has scored 2 goals for us in 7 appearances and wasnt even picked for our bench today yet we still had to pay his vastly over blown wages.
Hmm, wonder who is the better loan signing ??
Time to stop thinking that just cos these players play for Millwall, Watford, Birmingham or Burnley that they are somehow inferior to our players - they are not.
We are where we are, and that means a mid table championship team with mid table champonship players.

I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that under Steve Kean we would still be in the automatic promotion places. Henning Berg has exactly the same managerial credentials and track record as his current and former sidekick, Colin Hendry. Both were brought into the club in a ridiculous and shameful attempt to ingratiate the fans by reliving the past glories of the 90's.
Singh and Berg between them have set the club back immeasurably because under Steve Kean the team was heading for an immediate return to the Premiership. We are now heading for oblivion.

This is high time to get quality with control in the game. I feel Pedersen,Gomes,Kazim
,Vukcevic,Givet,Lowe should get back with start. Each one have there quality and proved too. I know Kazim is not a favorate to all, but he can generate hell out of power in his shot. I feel Kazim will play better than formica.
Loosing games is not easy sign to get back soon, other teams will get more strength with points in the table and we end up in mid table with a vast quality of big names and big pay.

Rovers under Berg are moving in the right direction but there is still a lack of confidence brought on by what has happened over the last two years.
Alex Ferguson couldn't fix that in an handful of games.
Another point, I haven't checked recently but I would lay odds that our away form is significantly better than our home form.
Rovers played well but were beaten by a better team on the day.
I would argue the difference between the two sides was actually the keepers, one who commanded his area from start to finish and the other who appears to have been tapped up by West Ham.

I'm with you. Really fans get behind the team, not whinge incessantly about the state of the club's management, which I don't remember any of them objecting when it was sold right under their noses to foreign unknowns.
Still, it gives them something to do now that Ewood Park is no longer their home. Whilst they quietly plot to take over the world the rest of us can at least get on with getting behind our team and club.
Oh.. And the best excuse I heard yesterday for not coming back, when I suggested that Kean had gone so what the purpose of the continued boycott:
"Well technically he wasn't sacked.. "

The squad is there to do well but they need re-coaching after being under the tutliage of useless cretin Kean so its going to take some time. Course I don't want to lose pts to Burnley but I have my eye further ahead to May and its that result that's most important. My lads are going on Sunday and though they desperately want to win or at least draw they'll enjoy it whatever the result just for the occasion, singing etc.
By all accounts we let a good keeper in Bunn go for next to nothing, when he took over from Robinson for a period of time he played well and commanded his area.Robinson seems too have lost his way and a new keeper to install some authority at the back would be a big plus

I also for the life of me cannot understand why one week Berg is complimenting players like Vukcevic and then just ignoring them. Its no use playing players like Formica and Fake Olsson, when we have more experienced international players who are injury free and wanting to play. With the length of the campaign we cannot afford to be playing players week in week out letting them fatigue when we have cover that may just be able to pull of a surprise.
Ruben was our best player and the only likely way of getting a goal with his creativity and willingness to keep trying. He's a young player who needs encouragement whether it comes off or not.
I dont know if anyone else else thought Jordan looked a bit tired (virus ??) and off the pace ... Just illustrates how reliant we are on his forward play & goals ...

Just kidding.
Maybe WHUFC will sack BFS if they don't win tomorrow? Venky's probably would do. That's what they did after we failed to beat Bolton and go to sixth in the PL. The rest, as they say is history.

Rovers were well beaten by a decent Millwall team who played a simple 4-4-2 formation. Yes they actually had 2 strikers working alongside each other – none of the 4-4-1-1 favoured by Kean, Black and now it seems Berg.
Can someone please explain what was the point of signing a 5ft 11” striker and bringing him on the left side of midfield to replace Olsson.
Surely he needed to go upfront to support the isolated Jordan Rhodes.
What will happen when Leon Best is fit? - will Berg continue to play 4-4-1-1 ?
Turning now to midfield, we have now had 18 games of the season and in my opinion I am convinced that Murphy and Etuhu are not the right combination in the centre of midfield.
Formica is not a right sided midfielder or a winger – in fact he disappeared from the right completely in the 2nd half. This had the effect of preventing Henley from getting forward in support.
I agree with an earlier post in asking why was Vucavic not brought on much earlier?
At the back, Givet must start in the centre.
Finally, we all know that Shebby Singh set Kean a points target of 16 from his first 7 games. So far Berg has 5 from 5 games.
I am willing to give Berg more time but a possible automatic promotion this year is rapidly slipping away.

I am fairly upbeat about Berg and Rovers at present, just hope I am in an happy frame of mind this time next Sunday.
And even if we don't win that one I suspect we only need to get to the transfer window and still be in touching position of the top 6, let Berg move some players on and bring his own players in, then anything can happen.
Then who knows, could be full glasses at the end of the season.

We need to reinvent ourselves on the lines of Boro or Forest. But, we will always be better than any other club in the world. French Rover said Still not like Millwall Bazzer whatever you say...but yes we will always (in our minds and our hearts) be better than any other club in the world. Proud (still) to be a Rover. And yes still some sorting out to do now and in the Jan window for HB to get it all together and make us into the scoring / winning team that is hard to beat and is up there challenging and then winning promotion.

French Rover wrote:"French Rover" aka "I've Leg Tag" (quite appropriate rearrangement of the name would you say??)...which team was top of the league this season?? We've even signed Jordan Rhodes since...so what is your excuse for not beating the likes of Millwall at home now?? (APART FROM SOME VERY SUSPECT DEFENDING). More players...more commission to embezzle out of the club.

All I know is that if we bring the form from the last 4 games to Burnley next week we are going to DESTROY them! I dont care how hard Burnley work, THEY DO NOT HAVE THE CLASS THAT IS ROVERS!!!

Paul Robinson was beaten by 2 goals scored from a mile out, this is not good enough, the first one fair enough not a whole lot he could do with that but his positioning and reaction to the 2nd goal was pathetic. Friedel in January is a neccesity.
Grant Hanley is not a good player, its that simple, he was megged embarrassingly for the goal and his overall play is so slow and lumbering all season.
Centre Midfield is way too slow for this league, we need busy box to box midfielders who will compete in there and give nothing away easily. etuhu and murphy are not working!
we're not 100 miles off dominating teams and getting the results we deserve but at the moment we are naive, unfit and rusty
lacking some fire in our bellies. hopefully the upcoming derbys can ignite some passion!!

Rovers lost to an on-form side... We had plenty of shots to show that we are a top class team, we just didnt get the luck with the goal on the end of them... $hit happens!! We cant win every game, no team can!
