Berg insists Rovers have to do better
5:58pm Saturday 3rd November 2012 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
HENNING Berg insists his Blackburn Rovers side have to do much better after his first game at the helm ended in a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
Rovers' Norwegian boss saw his side slip to their first away defeat of the season as Glenn Murray scored in each half.
Berg said: "We did not defend well enough and we did not use the ball well enough when we were in possession.
"Crystal Palace are a good side but we are capable of much better, we know that.
"Crystal Palace deserved to win the game, no one could argue they didn't. We have to look forward now."

Berg job wasn't helped by silly "honest" statements by the clueless management that Berg wasn't the first choice - everyone knows that, but what's the point of saying it ? Ever heard of confidence building, solidarity, loyalty ?
... and Shabby saying Promotion or else doesn't help a manager starting a three years contract.
There's a deep malaise at Rovers which has obviously got to the players, if Berg turns this round and keeps in with a shout for the playoffs, it will be a miracle.

I get the feling that Shabby is making decisions and HB was so grateful for a job in management that he accepted this, and hoped he would gain their confidence.
If Shabby went out and bought cheap foreign imports for Kean, he'll do the same for HB. I really fear for this team. Confidence will not come from inexperience, and that is all we have.
We have a non football owner, a football talker, who says anything, and a potentially up and coming Manager, where is the inspiration coming from?

However, with a decent guy on board, we can see this is the best we can expect at this moment in time, and people should not expect miracles.
It will take time and patience, and very pleasingly on here it appears that many ae seeing it the same and not jumping on any bandwagon that the trolls and the less than reasonable posters are trying to churn up.
Its the time to fully support the man in charge and lets see where it takes us.

But what happens when the club loses?? They need to go out and spend money on more players!! and which agency gets the money??? What an impressive operation it all makes. Saddle the club with huge amounts of debt whilst seemingly tapping off money into another company. The fact is....this needs urgent investigation by the authorities. Otherwise in 3 years time the club will be in a hell of a state and all assets will have been stripped off seemingly "legitimately" elsewhere.

Berg has had a few days with the team, what do we expect? That everything will be fine from day one? There is a lot of work to be done with these players and it will take time to get his ideas across. The key thing he has to try and manage is to stay in touch with the leading pack whilst this transition takes place.
I also notice that people have stated a few new managers have won on their debuts, so what? Many a time a new manager comes in a gets a good run of results but on many occasions it reverts back to type/normality. Look at O'neill at Sunderland and Coyle at Bolton but to name a couple. Real sustained change takes time. And when the philosophy/mentality etc are really instilled into the team/club only then can sustained improvement/growth be achieved. Some players won't buy into new ideas, they will be gone. Some players will thrive and help any new players who arrive.
Kean has gone, we got what we wanted. To criticise Berg at this stage is just nonsense. Some good changes have happened over the last few months, we can't keep automatically criticising every decision as we won't move forward as a club. We can't forget what has gone on over the last two years but we also can't never trust again because this will only continue to hold us back. We have to keep our end of the bargain and get behind the manager now. Make Ewood a hard place to come for oppositions and we have a chance of keeping up the fight until Henning can't instil his own ideas onto the team. I welcome any criticism but not from people who are too stubborn to move on from the past which would allow us to move forward.

HB is not a time traveller and can't take over last May when Kean should have gone. He has to live with the squad he's been left.
Even in terms of ridiculous targets, you should at least give him till the end of January - not that that could be considered in any way reasonable either.
Groucho, Chico and Harpo sitting in the boardroom don't make it any easier, together of course with the Venkys who have an affinity for f@cking up. That wouldn't change even if we had God almighty as manager.

The optimisitic parallel is Sparky, who had never managed a club side at any level. His first games with the squad he inherited from that dunce Ince were a disaster, but gradually he instilled some rigour into them, got them fit. It will take time and patience. The depressing aide of this is of course, Sparky had a supportive management of Williams and co. Berg has to put up with this numpty Shabby whose only plan is to shoot his mouth off and increase his profile back home.
Berg has a very delicate balance to make, only when he gets the team into shape can he take on Shabby who seems to have the ear of the Venkys. There has to be a eventual parting of the ways.
If - not at this rate - but if Rovers make it back in year one, I can see that loon Shabby and the Venkys staying on to milk the situation of being in the Premiership.
At least give Berg a break and see what he makes of the team.

Well, you are either a Dingle (probably not) or you know sweet fa about football. You might watch but you appreciate precious little.

What is plain to see IS that Hanley isn't enough BECAUSE (yeah, try to give reasons) he is too slow in his head and physically (so he pulled the player back for a pen) AND on crosses he doesn't get his head to the ball first or do enough to put the attacker off. It happened yesterday and against Middlesbrough. Hanley is sh!t and the full backs are physically weak as stoppers. Berg will know this.

If you can't defend you're going to lose games, and as I said after the boro game none of our back 4 or goalkeeper would hold a place in any premiership team,we have proberbly 4 or so midfield/ forwards. Who could make that grade, so don't get to disappointed when we aren't there at the end of the season, there are at least 6 other teams who would fancy their chances of finishing above us and the way we've played so far you could make that 10

I have been saying for the last few weeks on here that most of the points we have gained this season so far are down to luck more than skill and endeavour. It just papers over the massive cracks that we have as a club and as a team.
I am all for HB and can see the task he has ahead and the people on here who think any other manager in the world could transform this team into promotion certainties are totally naive.
Shebby the mouth wil keep shooting himself and others in the foot with his constant interfering and profile building.
I think personally HB biggest fight is to be left alone and choose his own team/ players required to improve bus and build towards a proper promotion push next season.
The squad he has inherited is awful with too many over the hills and to many journeyman with not an ounce of fight or club spirit.
He could do far worse than play more of the kids who want to be here, who want to play for the club and fight for the cause.
I would love to hold my hands up at the end of the season and say I was wrong and what a wonderful transformation of the team he has done and how we deserved the promotion... But hand on heart I can't see it.
Lets all get behind the team on Saturday and show our support for HB and show the footballing world that we are proper fans who are willing to give the club a good chance and we are not a bunch of whining moaning fans who will never be happy with anything and think we have a divine right to be in the top tier of the football leagues.
I just pray that this lot in charge don't ruin us anymore and we have a football club left when they finally sell up and go.
God knows when that will be (probably when there is nothing left for them to take) but we will have to pray for the best until that does finally happen.

Todays modern world is built on corruption and the shennanegins in professional football at the top is prime example.
You are quite right that many will find some ways around it, just like they do in all walks of life. But, to have legislation to take action as opposed to none whatsoever can only be a good thing. In my very humble 'living in the past' opinion.

Venkys didn't, the bank threatened to cut off its credit to the point of possibly threatening foreclosure (ref. Paul Hunt's leaked letter). They had also demanded the £10mill Venkys had said they would pay when the took over the club but hadn't. No wonder they got twitchy.
Every football club in the top two divisions is in debt one way or another. And virtually all of those below them. So why did we have to be debt free? Could they not manage the debt? We seem to have been doing it previously. Then again, we did have people in charge who were capable of distinguishing their @rse from their elbow in those days.
Venkys have had the bizarre policy of cost cutting when they had the guaranteed £40odd million income and speculating using copius amounts of money when we haven't. If they hadn't gone on their ill-conceived economy drive last year, they may have been £25-30mill better off this - even with Kean.
Then again, we haven't seen last year's accounts. Based on their first year (losses increased by over 900%) they may be enough to make your eyes water. I suppose it depends on which recipe the accountants are using.
People keep referring to the owners taking advantage of the parachute payments as though all the costs have disappeared just because we got relegated. The wage bill of the new players alone will eat up the majority of that and we still have to pay those that were already here.
Relegation and retaining Kean has seen us almost certain to miss out on the bonanza of the new TV deal next year. That will be another £50mill+ down the pan when you consider the parachute payments will drop by half.
And the high earners will still be here remember as no-one's going to pay them what we are, so the accountants are going to have to be even more imaginative. Or Venkys may just jump ship, leaving it to sink without a trace.
Good luck Henning, you are going to need it mate.

I genuinely believe we'll be in Lg1 or Lg2 in the next five years, but that will probably have to happen to lose the so-called owners of this club.
In the meantime, best of luck to Henning Berg. I hope he negotiated a decent contract for himself, and he has BRFC history. It won't happen overnight. We are still a team with glaring defincies.

(they are all experienced Managers of great potential)
You ask yourself why and maybe part of the answer is the damaged done by Kean plus the state of the playing squad & backroom staff that HB has inherited...OR the Venky,s track record over the two years...OR the outspoken "twit" that is called a Gobal Advisor....OR the terms and conditions the new person had to take on-board !!
Whatever the reason it is about time ALL REAL SUPPORTERS of the team got behind HB and
1) appreciate the BIG challenge he has taken on
2) the need for a vocal home support and make the team feel they have the backing of a 20,000 crowd.
Berg will need all the supporter and encouragement.....of course it will need the whole team to stand up and be counted, show some "balls" and think of the club and NOT themselves.

I believe there are probably more kick-backs off the pitch, than on it!

Will be interesting to see what his team is for Tuesday as he seems to be giving fringe players an opportunity to prove themselves from the start.
Still playing badly, still in the top 6.

He's the only hope at the moment in what has become a sad shambles of a club. He's an ex Rover with some club loyalty and a mind of his own so get behind him 100%.
It wont happen overnight but he might just sort out the mess and get us back where we belong.

Robbo (terrible kicking but some good saves)
Henley (deserves another chance at RB)
Dann (did ok mostly)
Givet (Need him fit and back in as Hanley was abysmal)
Olsson (Markus) (Martin is not remotely interested)
Dunn (Murphy should never wear the shirt or the captains armband again)
Pederson (got taken off when he was playing quite well?)
Formica (Good when he came on)
Rochina (Superb when he came on - even the Palace fans thought he was our best player)
Rhodes (he never received one pass to run onto and we made him look ordinary - but he is still full of goals if we play to him)
Subs:
Nunes (Rhodes surely needs him to play off soon)
Etuhu (looked off the pace but not terrible)
Simon (looked fast and dangerous when he came on)
Kazim-Richards (Hopeless)
Riberio
Kean
Olsson (Martin)
After such a shocking display at Palace then Berg can surely help sort out a more balanced and effective team for the Huddersfield game. Go to learn to play to/feed Jordan Rhodes - he will get us goals. Probably needs someone like Rochina or Formica closer to him or even Nuno Gomes. Still sixth even after saturday so there is still a good platform to build from for Berg. Hope we stuff the Terriers for Jordan's sake!
