FULL-TIME: Blackburn Rovers 3 Leyton Orient 2

ON THE WAY THROUGH Ruben Rochina looked good ON THE WAY THROUGH Ruben Rochina looked good

BLACKBURN Rovers advance to the fourth round of the Carling Cup tonight after a five-goal tie with Leyton Orient.

First-half Rovers were clearly the dominant side possession-wise allowing very little time on the ball for Orient apart from a few attacking runs.

However for Blackburn, with so many changes made from Saturday’s excitement against Arsenal, things were moving at a much more subdued pace.

Carrying on his brilliant form as a second-half sub on Saturday, Martin Olsson provided most of the pace on the pitch often playing high up the field.

Early attempts by Rochina and Vukcevic were struck wide as Rovers looked to gain the first goal but with little promise.

The best chance came from a Vukcevic cross which found the head of Gael Givet. Orient keeper Lee Butcher had to go full-stretch to stop the shot burying into the top corner.

However, Rovers did take the lead just before half-time after a challenge on an attacking Olsson saw him brought down inside the box by Omozusi.

Unlike the two spot-kicks against Everton this time the ball found the back of the net after Jason Roberts hit home.

The start of the second half saw Steve Kean looking to add a little more pace to his side with the switch of Junior Hoilett for Blackman.

Things were beginning to pick up a bit for Orient with more time on the ball allowing a run wide of goal for striker David Mooney. However, Bunn was quick to close down the angle of the shot, managing to stop it at his feet.

Rovers almost went 2-0 up at fifty-nine minutes after a floating chipped cross from Rochina was tipped goalwards by the head of Vukcevic but once again Butcher tipped it wide.

Related links

Orient quickly responded after the ensuing goal-kick was brought down the wing and across to Mooney only for his shot to be stopped by Mark Bunn.

Things were definitely heating up as a series of chances from Rovers looked to gain their second goal with some good play inside the box between Hoilett and Vukcevic.

However, Orient quickly fought back with another play down the wing by George Porter found Mooney on the end of his pass across goal to take the score to 1-1.

Rovers again took the lead after Jason Roberts’ shot was saved by the Orient keeper only to be knocked into the path of Reuben Rochina for easy tap-in on the seventieth minute.

Scything through the Orient defence with a brilliant run Hoilett almost had the score to 3-1 but his blistering shot was parried away fantastically by Butcher.

A third goal for Rovers wasn’t far off though as a failed clearance from Orient saw the drop to Simon Vukcevic inside the box to score his first goal of the season seventy-five minutes in.

In the closing stages of the game Orient were working hard to claw back another goal. With a few promising attempts in the first-half Dean Cox answered the call after his shot around Mark Bunn went in off the post five minutes from time.

Rovers almost answered the goal in kind after some clever play between substitute Yakubu and Roberts forcing Butcher to save yet another dangerous shot on goal.

With four minutes added on the clock Rovers held tight to finish on a 3-2 victory to advance to the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

OK performance - but a win is a win...Vukcevic looks very promising, again seems another decent spot by Keano and the scouts.

With a large dose of Keano positivity, back to back and wins and bring on a "tired" Toon on Saturday.

Right Chaps, gonna say it as I saw it and leave myself out there for you all to slag off,
Bunn 3 shotson goal 2 goals not good enough
Olson, Obvioulsy told to defend, di that bit , but totaly absent as an attacking threat
Givet, Did a decent Job but going to be behind yje 3 first choice centre backs
Hanley , needs a year on loan at a top 10 championship club, and will step up.
Lowe,he needs some match time in these kind of games , but is he is still a bit off the pace , would be better as a holding midfield player then a right back.
Simon Vuc**ic, Looks the part but wont pick up the premier league pace until December earliest
Rochina , too good for the some of the players around him, going to have to learn that they all are not making Messi runs, but the one of the two Bright Stars for Rovers if we can keep him
Petrovic Tonoght, did not do enough to claim nzonzi`s place in the fisrt eleven The Jury is out,
Grella, well done for doing 90 Mins, but again the Zonz would be in front of him every game .
Blackman, Sorry but did nowt, maybe a year in the championship would do him good.
Roberts. Sorry Ja but time to think of a full time media career.
Junior . came on at half time, showed flashed of greatness, but as nornal was at his best when on the left and could cut in ,

We missed Samba , but it was fantasic to see him warming the subs pree match, that proves he is worthy of the captains arm band even if he does go in Jan,

So go on guys shoot me down

No thats fine pal, pretty honest perception!! Along way to go yet though and through my blue and white tinted glasses the future looks bright! More so because of how good our young and our new attacking options look and not because of steve kean but they deserve our backing for now and that's good enough for me!! 3 point on sat at our usually kind hunting ground and we could be top 10 by this time sat night!! Nothing wrong with thinking possitive, even if this is from a kentaro P.R representative!! That 1's for you smelly coffee!!

So picking one game, arsenal, then picking how many internationals they had playing compared to how many we had playing, even though both teams won is not irrelevant and splitting heirs is it not! If you really are a rovers fan then you either have serious unresolved issues with steve kean from a previous life or your life now just needs taking by yourself immediately! Not just tonight's post but your post's every night you are 1 sad individual and you will never be happy in my opinion unless you pack up now move to barcelona and get a season ticket at the nou camp! Agree with you on the clean sheet front but Dann is still finding his feet alongside a new centre back partner and tonight, well what do you expect it was a reshuffled defence and all that matters is they got game time and we won! Here that noise, yeah that's me resting my case!

Thought that would be it until you re-group and come back on tomorrows story!! By the way arsenal had 6 internationals playing! You really don't like it when someone who obviously knows a hell of a lot more than you picks at your unnecessarily negative comments do you! If you are a real rovers fan all i ask of you is to at least make a decent argument of your negative ball coxs next time!

Just wanted to say well done to the lads.
Another win and through. It wasn't pretty but we're through.

On a another note. My lad was mastcot today, and we had THE best ever day ever. We met all the players in the changing room which was sureal . Music blasting out, lads with earphones on dancing, playing keepeups and generally a really relaxed and good feeling in there. we went into the treatment room were roberts was getting massaged . he mentioned he like my lads barnet, my lad said he liked his too! Grella was face down with his bare **** being massaged and lowe was getting a thigh massage in his undies! weird?!. they all signed a ball and my lads first footy boot from when he was 4. He walked down the tunnel and played on the pitch with givet and came off the pitch shaking with excitement......
An excellent day throughout and rovers looked after us. We went into the managers room and chatted with kean and anderson for a few mins about the arsenal game and he seemed a genuinely nice bloke and was super nice with my lad.
Today reminded me of why i love the beautiful game. We felt special, mixed with the lads and were welcomed by them all including the managers. Rovers is a family club. A club that cares and a club that has guaranteed itself a life long supporter in my 8 year old son today.
THANK U BRFC for giving my lad the best day of his life (and his dad):)

Congratulations to you and your lad buddy!! Iv played for junior rovers, been a programme seller, a ball boy and a mascot all in the 80's and it's good to know we still have a future of proper die hard fans still coming through! Was going to suggest taking him on the ground tour as well but if he's been in the changing room with the players i suppose that can wait a few years for now!!

Due to work wasnt at the game last night but as others have said a win is a win and we are safely through to next round and no chance of meeting Villa this season ! Yahooooo!

Seems like there were many changes and some of the second string got a run out but just scraped through.

i see barn door roberts managed a goal from the spot but not in open play, thought he might of against a team more at his level !

Anyway lets see what the draw throws up and then look forward to the weekend for another 3 points in Jordyland.

Phew...squeezed through to the next round...but sometimes that's the nature of cup competition...the fact that we're there is the main thing...and that some of the more fringe players got time on the pitch...

Aw yeah, how good would it be to draw the dingles in the next round?!

As for the good news story from Granty...that is great to hear...and it restores some of my faith in the club...

I've been a life-long fan, and a programme seller and on my 21st birthday got to meet the players in the player's lounge, and so always thought they were good with the fans...

But recently started to doubt the new regime...a couple of us Rovers fans down here contacted the club at the start of the season to say that one of our Rovers-supporting friends had nearly died in a crash and was making a slow and difficult recovery, and wondered whether they could do anything (eg meeting a player, or even a signed programme!) to cheer him on his slow journey back to health. We would all obviously buy tickets to the game and we would bring him up...but until now we haven't heard anything back...I thought maybe it was the case under the new order...

COYB...keep the good news coming...

Old saying in every sport, "You can only beat what's put in front of you".
.
My only criticism would be that Rovers didn't get out of first gear for most of the first half, or the second for that matter.
.
But in all honesty they really didn't have to.
.
Their keeper had a cracking game, good shot stopper and got plenty of practice.
.
So thats 2 wins and a draw since the window closed.
