'WE need to wait because so far he has played one Premier League game and some minutes at Wembley.

'But potentially he is a fantastic player.

'He needs to play more games with Manchester United.’ That’s what Fabio Capello said about former Blackburn Rovers centre back Phil Jones.

When the manager of England doesn’t notice a player of Jones’ talent for a full season and three months of the season before, it’s no wonder the national side is in a state.

It was Sunday, March 21, 2010, when Jones made his Premier League debut.

A real baptism of fire in a home game against Chelsea. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but man of the match Jones was responsible for keeping goal machine Didier Drogba at bay.

That was just the beginning. With regular first team action he grew and grew and his performances continued to improve and he transferred to the champions for £17m.

Immediately after his transfer, he’s up there as one of the first few names on the England teamsheet. In all probability, team selection for Capello is easy.

“Give me a list of all the English players at the top four clubs. We’ll be fine.” It must go something like that.

What must England Under 20s Jason Lowe and Josh Morris be thinking?

As soon as they become old enough to hit the big time, they’ll need to get out of Ewood Park if they ever want to play in a World Cup.

It’s not the first time Rovers stars have been shunned by England. Had Paul Robinson been playing in London come the previous World Cup, you can all but guarantee he’d have had a place in the squad, if not the starting 11.

Other notable players include David Dunn, Stephen Warnock, David Bentley, Matt Jansen – who was dropped in place of defender Martin Keown – David Thompson and Chris Sutton.

How many other Premier League top scorers settle for a place in the B team?

When players like Chris Powell and Michael Ricketts have England caps to their names, you do have to wonder.

It's an absolute disgrace that Capello is so utterly short-sighted. His decisions affect smaller teams like ourselves in the fact that our players MUST leave to get into the England squad.

As soon as PJ pulled a red shirt on, he was good enough for england, but not when he had a blue and white shirt on, its absolutely ludacrist and Capello should be publicly flogged as a result

MxMave, I was in agreement until the "Capello should be publicly flogged as a result" bit.

Also if Jones had been in the full England squad whilst at Rovers…think we might have got a few more bob for him.

Why would he be in the squad? How much of last season was he out injured for? Its not rocket science that a defender playing in a winning team is going to appear a lot better than a defender in a team that is fighting relegation!
.
Didn't Paul Robinson throw his toys out the pram and "retire" from international football?

What rubbish, why should an over priced Phil Jones who isn't a firest team regular at Utd walk into the England team. One day he will probably be a fixture but there's no way he should be in front of players like Cahill, who showed what a top player he is against Bulgaria,( dId you watch him KDG) proved what you know.

Terry is still first choice and Ferdinand too when he's fit but both of them make lots of mistakes and Jones and Cahill are better than both. Good article which tells it how it is, imho. Terry should have been dropped after his display in the World Cup when he was totally out of position for all the goals. And of course Capello should have been sacked too - he is doing nothing to show he is improving. He's just there for the cash, like most of the players. Pathetic.

Is that the Cahill who's gonna sign a pre contract agreement with one of the big four on 1st Jan 2012 and then walk away from Bolton in the summer for ZERO ??? - that would make the paltry £16m Rovers got for PJ look like grrrrrreat business !!

Didn't think i would have to explain this again but i'll make another attempt for a Dingle. BWFC owe less to the bank than Rovers, nearly all BWFC debt is to the owner Eddie Davies. Does it ring any bells like when Jack Walker bank rolled Rovers.

Humm.....so, what point are you making here then, Mr Clough?
Are you saying that Capello only picks from the big clubs? So why then mention Rickets and Chris Powell as players that have been picked ahead of Rovers players. Likewise, its Cahill from Bolton that has patiently waited for his place and has kept himself ahead of Jones in the queue...good luck to Cahill!
.
Fact is that Jones is very much on Capellos radar and he was before he went to Old Trafford too.
He will become a quality England player very soon, no doubt, but I dont think you can criticise Capello for going with Terry and Cahill, COME ON!

Then why bother responding you empty headed dingle.Your out of your depth.
And thats coming from an empty headed Bolton fan who has a sad life, with a team who are worth talking about, so they need to come on this site to talk about a real football team in BRFC !

Personally I dont mind a bit of banter with our poor east lancs 6 fingered friends but why bother with the numpties at the Reebok retail park, who get more people shopping at the asda there than inside the lack of atmosphere stadium !
Yer right because Burnley are in a lower league and are therefore an easy target but you cant handle it from fan of another premiership team, well hard luck, i'm not going anywhere. So if you can't handle it ,don't respond.

Yes on the up . The club is in transition at the moment , hopefully for the better . Lots of new talented and exciting players , that will obviously take time to gel and adjust , but once they do we should see the improvement not just now but for the future . Please remind me how your club is improving now and for the future ( Cahill staying doesn't count as he'll be gone January ) .
