Blackburn Rovers column: Despite everything, we can’t give up hope
8:20am Thursday 19th April 2012 in Andy Cryer's Blackburn Rovers blog
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
EVEN the most rose-tinted of Blackburn Rovers’ fans would have to admit things don’t look good with regards to the club’s Premier League future.
Steve Kean’s men have just lost five games on the bounce, three of which have been in dire circumstances, while the ‘Gael Givet saga’ has done little to generate belief that Rovers can pull off a miraculous great escape.
If football was logical you would have to say ‘it is all over’, with the proverbial fat lady warming up her vocal chords. Fortunately for Rovers, football has no logic.
And that is why I am unashamedly saying relegation does not have to be a certainty.
Look at the great escapes of the past and you will see teams have got out of deeper trouble than Rovers are currently in.
We all know Kean has done little to justify the faith Venky’s have in him as manager, we all know our absent owners have been nothing short of shocking. But while there is life there is hope.
I’m sure I will get hammered in some quarters for saying this but we all have to retain some belief that Junior Hoilett, Yakubu and co are still capable of pulling off the miracle – despite the farce that has been going on behind the scenes.
At 3pm on Saturday we all have to be with the 11 players who go out on to that football pitch, whoever they are, and forget – for 90 minutes at least – what a mess the current regime have made of things.
The supporters have been incredibly patient in very testing times and, while the club has lost most of the pride it used to have, for the majority of fans that has remained intact.
The sense of resignation among large sections after Saturday’s dismal defeat is understandable.
But there are still four games to go.
Safety can still be achieved and while that hope, albeit faint, exists, we can’t give up.
Few can now be left in no doubt that things are deeply wrong at the football club.
There is no organi-sation, no structure, no communication and seemingly no plan.
Conspiracy theories and rumours of financial problems abound as to why Rovers have been allowed to get themselves in this position. The simple truth is they have so far come up short in just about every area.
From the manager and the owners to the players, pretty much everything has been wrong ever since the club was taken over some 18 months ago.
It stemmed from bad advice and just gathered speed.
There is little sign that these are the right people to take Rovers forward but that has to wait to the end of the season.
For the moment we have our Premier League lives to fight for.
Venky’s have yet to show they are prepared to fight for the football club but let’s show against Norwich on Saturday that the fans, the lifeblood of the club, aren’t ready to give up quite so easily.

Why don't you expose Anderson and the whole corrupt set up.
We always get behind our team...no matter what! We don't need you to tell us to do that.
You have a responsibility to the people of Blackburn to help us restore our club to what it was founded for in 1875.
To do that you must publish the truth.

Whether that message is to Venkys or Kean it doesnt matter. They are one and the same. If Kean is the one who has face to face contact with them, he has to be the messenger. I havent renewed yet, but I havent made a decision because Im wanting to hear what if any the plan will be when we are relegated. If the season ticket advert said "dont miss out on the Early Bird offer, get your piece of another season of Steve Kean's lunatic player choice and team selection, his inept tactics, his dire results and his cringeworthy interviews and his lies and dont miss out on another spectacular relegation" would you buy a ticket? If a builders company advertised cut price roofing and you knew they were dodgy, would you get them in? We are basically being asked to buy a ticket to be part of a cowboy set-up. That is a big ask no matter how staunch a supporter you have been.
Am I missing something here? Apart from the dingles on these message boards aren't we all passionate rovers supporters? All this talk of being a fan for a hundred years but wont set foot in Ewood again, blah blah, I just cant get my head round. Supporting the team come what may is very bold of you and you may enjoy swinging your todger around proclaiming you are a "proper fan" but why don't you take a moment to think about what it is you're doing. You're just an irritating feature in the circus that is Rovers. Why do you go back for more? Steve Kean has treat you with utter contempt for 12 months. You have been trodden on and as soon as the club put on a gratuitous "offer" on (early bird) to ingratiate themselves with those they have disrespected for 12 months, you're there biting like a fool. I can see both sides in the debate about whether to carry on going to Rovers. I have been a season ticket holder since 1977 and I've seen the good times and the bad. During the bad times, support falls away and returns during better days. The supporters who stay away in the bad times have always been the ones that aren't that bothered. Part timers we used to call them. Not the real fans who stick by their team through thick and thin. All that has changed since the nightmare of Venkys and Kean arrived on the scene. For the first time in my 35 years of support, there are real, proper honest fans who will not attend next season. These aren't people who can't be bothered or only want to watch the big teams. These are desperate, loyal fans who are Rovers through and through and who hate what these people have done to our club. Will I go next season in the Championship. Yes, because I am a Rovers fan and that's what I'll carry on being till I'm carted off in a box. But will I criticise real genuine fans who can't stomach any more. No.
I probably wont give up hope on Saturday but if the team is 2 or 3 down at half time much like previous calls for support the fans will no doubt show their frustration as it is a natural reaction. It is surely impossible to back a team playing in the manner they did at Swansea? (Another game for a refund?)

It is so so wrong to label any supporter who cannot stomach this any longer as all of a sudden a part time fan. As is the attack upon one who will continue to turn up regardless.
As said it is a fact of life that at EVERY club, attendance is affected by good times and bad times respectively.
Lets not be kidded by outsiders that we at Rovers are unique.

Blackburn’s disaster of a manager, Steve Kean should leave Ewood immediately.
His position has become even more untenable than it was. Never mind his dismal record; the worse ever in history by a Blackburn manager, it is his continued lies and deceit that condemn him.
We do not want such a dishonourable man in charge of our famous club.
His latest tirade was to ‘play his usual blame game’ by blaming Gael Givet for the dismal surrender at Swansea, stating Givet refused to play. Kean later back tracked on that statement by saying “Givet’s head was not right to play”.
Givet countered Kean’s statement by issuing his own on Wednesday on Sky Teletext it read “I wanted to play. I wish to make it clear that I have never refused to play for Blackburn Rovers. It was manager Steve Kean who decided which players would be selected for the match at Swansea”. If ever a statement condemns a manager as being an out and out liar this one does. And I know who I prefer to believe.
This is the latest in a long line of lies and untruths from Steve (the man who cannot win football matches) Kean, how many more do we have to put up with?
Kean’s misleading statements are too many to list, we all know them but here are a just a few reminders.
On Ryan Nelson’s unexplained departure in January Kean said “he is not fit to play football”. One week later Nelson was playing for Spurs against Stevenage in the FA Cup on a very difficult pitch, the match was televised and Nelson nominated man of the match. Nelson has been a regular member of Spurs squad since, making several full appearances and cameos from the bench. How Rovers have needed him.
Kean stated Chris Samba would not be sold but once Samba blasted Kean and the owners by exposing the farce behind the scenes at Ewood, Samba was swiftly sold for twelve million pounds. Kean applauded the sale saying “at least everyone here now wants to be here”. Something I very much doubt.
Even in Crown Court and on oath during his drink drive prosecution Kean was at it again. Stating his drinks had been spiked in the Ewood board room. A suggestion quickly dismissed by the judge saying there was no evidence what so ever to support Kean’s claim.
You see Kean plays the ‘blame’ game, nothing is ever his fault.
He has very cleverly laid his get ‘out of jail’ plans once Rovers are relegated. The majority of blame will levelled at the fans and their protests as being disruptive to the team. But let us not forget these protests did not start until late December when Rovers were marooned at the foot of the table.
Hence Kean’s much publicised and hyped body guard, totally unnecessary and a waste of money. Another example of Kean playing the blame game and milking public sympathy from a gullible media.
I could go on and on, but it gets tiresome my thoughts and opinions of Kean are well documented on my website, www.regoftherovers.c
o.uk
At first nobody took much notice, now everyone including my 22,000 followers can see through this fraud that is apart from Mrs Anuradha (I like to be entertained) Desai and her useless brothers Ventkatesh and Balaji.
Any man who knives in the back the man who took him from the dole que and gave him a good job, as Kean did to Allardyce is despicable.
Let us not forget this is the man who has seen two assistants leave him in less than a year, this is the man who has seen ten senior players sold in less than a year, or have their contract’s cancelled. Some have spoken out against Kean such as Samba, Andrews, Diouf, and Roberts others have picked up their severance pay and been glad to leave in silence.
Can anyone work with Kean, certainly former chairman John William’s couldn’t, he stated so to Mrs Anuradha Desai in February 2011 and departed soon after that. Let us not forget John Williams had worked in harmony with the likes of Graeme Souness, Mark Hughes and Sam Allardyce over the past fourteen years and with no problems. Two months of Kean was too much for him to stomach.
This man should leave Ewood immediately if Blackburn Rovers are to have any future.
At least the team would have half a chance in their last two home games against Norwich and Wigan, the supporters would be lifted, the gloom would be gone, as it is Norwich and Wigan are away bankers !

Also Mr Cryer I have not seen an article from you yet, in which you look at the bigger picture. Namely, the facts are is that with the Venkys as owners relegation was not if but a question of when!
-
Assuming that you agree like all of us Rovers fans, that the Venkys are like a cancerous tumour which needs to be cut out of the club in order for us to survive. Do you agree that relegation may mean the Venkys are forced to leave sooner, and therefore able to do less long term damage to the club?
-
In hindsight now it would have been best in terms of getting rid of the Venkys, if we had been relegated last season. Unfortunately, we just had a good enough set of players at the time playing to overcome the incompetence of the managers and the owners.
-
I say fall scale VENKYS OUT campaigns until the VENKYS sell up and move on

How something that is in your heart and soul can just be dropped to make some point to owners who couldnt give a fig, doesnt make much sense to me. Do you seriously think not buying a few season tickets will register in Pune? We will still be Blackburn rovers when the dust has settled. Stop with your conspiracy theories and support your team. Yes its tough but isnt that what we are-Blackburn Rovers supporters? Will you all come back when things get better? Njoy standing outside Next changing rooms on a Saturday telling the missus that top suits her. I will be sat in my Blackburn End surrounded by all those empty seats. Hang your heads in shame. ROVERS TILL I DIE!

I have been around long enough to have seen good, bad and indifferent times down at Ewood. Best players sold. defence in tatters. BIG Sam out???, Tom Finn out ???, John Williams out???
3 top professional???. Is this Football. Steve Kean is just a Puppet, he is there to take the bullet. He is just being used and abused by Venkey and their friends.
WHY WHY WHY. When Rovers are relegated ( that is the objective of the new owners) a large cash payment from the EPL. that is the prize. they will walk away with millions of profit. Provided by real Rovers fans, you will have nothing but memories.
Would you give a Burglar a cash prize of £300 to steal from you. So why are you buying a season ticket to the owners to help their cash flow????
Stop the cash and you will stop Venkeys. Pay them and they WIN.

BRFC action group are to hold a protest march against Venky’s ownership prior to Saturday’s game against Norwich. They say in their statement released via Sky Teletext.
“To the people of Blackburn this is no longer just about losing Football matches, this is about the very future of the football club and the very fabric of Blackburn. Our football club is a 137 year old institution which has seen its traditions and values destroyed in less than 18 months. “it takes only a few hands to bulldoze our club but it will take many hands to rebuild it and the whole community needs to come together to breathe life into Blackburn Rovers. Venky’s cannot make us feel inferior if we do not give them our consent, words divide us, action unites us and if we are unified there is nothing we cannot achieve”.
Fine words, well said and well meant.
Not being a member of BRFC action group may I be so bold as to offer a slogan for Saturday’s protests that will cut to the heart of the Rao family.
MADE IN LANCASHIRE, DESTROYED IN INDIA.
First used on my website 16th May 2011. Please feel free to adopt if deemed suitable. This slogan on large banners beamed back to India TV would rankle the arrogant Rao family and displease and Indian nation who are a very proud people.

6 will be fuming) I like to make a day of it and go for a few pints with my old mates before and after the match, I've done this for over 20 years and I wont let some two bit chicken pluckers and a talentless, out of his depth donut change this. As for handing over the money, our cash was lining the pockets of undesirables(agent fees and greedy players like the Grellas of this world) long before these con men turned up. I respect anyone's decision not to renew and I hope to see you all back when the cancer in our club is cured.

All interesting comments on whether or not Rovers fans should be giving money to Venkys. I'll leave it up to individuals to come to their own conclusions as to whether or not they want to watch Kean's team. But every Rovers supporter absolutely needs to be at the Youth Cup Final on Wed 9th May. Full house at Ewood to support the team that Jack built. Those young lads have a lot to be proud about and so do the fans.

Good luck to the protesters you efforts have been well intentioned and peaceful, please keep it that way,I just can't see any effect so far.
I have attended ewood for 60+ years and I am sad at what we have become, will I buy a season ticket, without major changes the answer is no.To those who wish to buy a ticket regardless, I know where your coming from something makes it hard for you not to go and I hope you enjoy your ride on the Rovers roller coaster I have.
After all whose club is it.

WOW thanks for that Mcphee7. I am sure your bold stance of not going to watch the team you supposedly love will make all the difference. You call me unintelligent-based on what? So my £225 is going to perpetuate the Venkys tenure and it is my blind loyalty that is causing the problem? If thats the way you want to call it and you think you have the moral high ground, then thats your opinion. Do not however have a pop at me for not abiding by your rules. I am being slated for watching my team on a rovers forum-incredible! By handing over my money I am in some way supporting the regime. I suppose because I **** then I am contributing to global warming and future flooding. I am not on here to score points, just putting forward how I see things. I am a passionate supporter and I apologise if that does not sit comfortably with your theory which frankly is getting very tedious. I have made a decision to watch my team you sit there all you like theorising what may or may not happen

"
Mrs Desai said she remained impressed by the job that Kean is doing for Rovers and she played down the future role at the club of Mr Anderson, whose SEM/Kentaro group brokered the takeover deal.
She said: "Jerome has helped us but I want to be very clear that he does not run the club.
On Steve Kean, she said: "The manager is very good. When my brothers first met him they realised that the more you spend time with him the more impressive he becomes.
"He is a thinking manager and we are very impressed with him and we are confident going forward."
