Blackburn Rovers blog: Open letter to Venky's
3:00pm Thursday 24th November 2011 in Andy Cryer's Blackburn Rovers blog
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
LETTER Venky’s chairman Mrs Desai
DEAR Mrs Desai, I am again writing to you in the hope a number of issues can be clarified.
While we have no doubt Venky’s have Blackburn Rovers’ best interests at heart, the lack of communication from the club is causing confusion, mass speculation and unfounded rumours – leaving supporters increasingly frustrated and angry.
The Lancashire Telegraph, a newspaper at the heart of Blackburn’s community, has continually attempted to bridge the apparent gap between the club and the fans by asking the questions supporters have been posing.
But the lack of response from those with the knowledge has been consistent.
We are asking for a suitable system to be put in place where there is somebody with the power to address any issues that arise at the club.
The atmosphere around Ewood Park at the moment is horrible.
Fans are turning on fans and a lot of the mounting frustration is being taken out on manager Steve Kean – and even the team.
Some of the behaviour has undoubtedly been unacceptable but the situation will only escalate the longer the proud people of Blackburn are kept in the dark about what is happening at THEIR football club.
The mood on match days is not conducive to producing results and the pressure being put on Steve Kean’s shoulders due to a lack of a public figure at Ewood Park is ridiculous.
There are so many questions that need answers to at the moment but it appears no-one at Ewood Park is either able, or willing, to answer them. The club resembles a ship without a captain at the moment.
I do not need to tell you how important Premier League football is to Blackburn Rovers.
Relegation could be the end of the club as we know it, with all the financial ramifications it will bring.
It is not only the club, though. The town as a whole would suffer enormously.
Premier League football has put Blackburn on the map and, without it, the economy would take a sharp nosedive.
The club and the town needs everyone pulling in the same direction to get out of this mess and, while I have no doubt Venky’s want what we all do, the huge uncertainty surrounding the club is not helping.
Here are just a few of the key issues Blackburn Rovers fans are needing answers to.
- Venky’s initially promised ‘a significant transfer budget’ but we have yet to see this. Have circumstances changed or is money there to be ploughed in?
- Why is the club running with no chairman or chief executive at Ewood Park?
- Are SEM and Kentaro still involved in advising you? If they aren’t, who is?
* Can you ease fans’ concerns that the club’s borrowing could land them in financial trouble in the future?
* There has been interest from potential buyers. Have you been aware of such interest and are you adamant you will not be selling?
I am including this as an open letter in the Lancashire Telegraph so the supporters can see the issues are being raised.
We await your reply with interest.
Yours sincerely, Andy Cryer, Sports Editor, Lancashire Telegraph.

- Why have you been so persistent to 'revise' Steve Kean's contract yet despite rumours that it was 'close to completion', our most valuable asset Junior Hoilett is looking likely to leave the club in the near future for a small proportion of his actual value?
And the complete lack of communication between owners and fans is making us a laughing stock, especially when middle-man Steve Kean tells us nothing deemed truthful.
Sort it out Venkys or ship out. Clowns

‘Judge us at the end of the Transfer window!'
‘Judge me when I have got my team in place!’
'Substantial funds have been made available!'
‘Junior Hoilett will sign this week!’
‘Phil Jones is not for sale!’
‘We will make a marquee signing in the summer!’
‘We’ll finish in the top 10!’
‘There’s no way we will go down!’
The protest must be visible during the game (remember United wearing the green and gold?), that way the cameras cannot miss it. It must be something that the supporters can wear (therefore cannot be banned) and is something that we display week in, week out. That way the passive protesters can get behind and Venky’s will know that things haven’t fizzled out. It can’t be a chant or a song as there are many who do not want to adversely effect the teams performance – besides that just makes us look like loonies and can be difficult to quantify/easy to undermine as a minority.
The Barcelona fans wave white hankies when they are not happy. United did the green and gold thing. Its time for us to show unity and the strength of feeling. For lack of a better suggestion, show Venky’s and Kean the red card. Wear something red at the games. Take your red cards and show them when the teams come out. Show them when we score, show them when we concede. Anyone got a better idea – get it on here!

Venkys just continue to amaze me. What do they want? If they genuinely do want the best for the club (I'm beginning to wonder, because their actions don't suggest this), and to build a rapport with fans, they would have realised a long time ago that maintaining a good relationship with the local paper was paramount. So much could have been cleared up a long time ago by giving you a proper interview. I have no doubt that you have asked time and again for this, and simply been ignored.
Well done for posting this, but I'm sorry that the people you should be dealing with as a major part of your job have forced you to do it. This isn't something a journalist should ever have to do.

What they have done to the management structure of a club is akin to removing the three cylinders from the engine from a car and still expecting it to run. Yes, from the outside it looks the same - it has 4 wheels, seats, doors etc. In fact they've even added some new tyres! But what they seem incapable of fathoming is that, with only one cylinder firing, it is under far too much pressure and thus unable to move the car forward.
Having spoken to him at length a few weeks ago I am convinced that Paul Hunt is a great asset to our club, however one man cannot run a Premiership club on his own.
On the pitch results are beyond appalling - 1 very fortunate victory this season - and despite glimmers of performance in certain games, the players look unable to match their undoubted effort and talent with achieving success. In my mind this comes down to one man - Steve Kean. The cheap option with no experience drafted in to the top due to "impressing" a lady who, by her own admittance, had never seen a game of football.
Then there is their PR. Or lack of it. As Mr Wild said recently; as our principal sponsor did not receive any acknowledgement when he voiced his concerns. There is also the new contract for Mr Kean, seen by many as a two-fingured salute to the Ewood faithful. Add to that the denial of its existance by the club and Kean himself (who only this week said he had told the owners it was not the right time to discuss contracts, with the team in a perilous position).
In summary this has been a frustrating and insulting period of time as a fan. There has been very little coming from the club and what has come out has been spin and lies. If the Venky's want to make a success of this it is time they started treating BRFC as a serious matter and really get a grip. The first step would be to make a decision. One of the many that need to be taken. Hire some competent new backroom staff and sack the manager. I feel it may already be too late.

.
Every Rovers fan would have told them not to appoint Kean after sacking Big Sam. We understood the desire to make the football attractive but it needed a manager with a "Proven and experienced CV" at this level of competition - the best and most watched league in the world. Kean did not have that CV.
.
Would they please just admit they were naive in this respect and the results have now proved that although many fans did try to give Kean every chance - but he is just not performing and has no proof on his CV to suggest he ever could.
.
5 managers out there and available now could meet those CV criterias as well as playing great football -
Martin O'Neil
Mark Hughes
Rafael Benitez
Graham Souness
Alan Curbishley
I think if you do your research professionally you will find they have won a massive amount of trophies and / or promotions or considerably over achieved on the budgets given to them. This is why rovers fans are so frustrated because they know this.
.
Venkys - it really is a very simple situation to put right - remove Kean, thank him for his efforts and appoint one of the above managers and you would unite owners, club, manager and fans again and almost gurantee safety this season and progress next season.

For what it is worth I still think that Venky's have been mistrusted from day one, not only by us fans but also by the football world. Maybe, from the moment they sacked BFS most people in the game have avoided any contact with them and refused to work for them under their terms. Hence no executive jobs filled and maybe no manager would come anywhere near at the money they were willing to offer and offering Kean a job was the only option. Also, I think because of their poor knowledge of football they are still taking advice and swollowing Keans excuses. They may not realise what a poor imitation of a proper Manager he is until it is too late.
PLEASE, PLEASE do not think for one moment that I am an apologist for the Venky's. It's just trying to look at it from where thay are coming from. They have been, and are being, slow to learn and have been high handed and rude to us all, as was highlighted by WEC Chairman. How he has been ignored is a complete disgrace

O'Neil - left a far bigger club than us because of finances.
Hughes - left us in the first place because of finances, and despite his success here, doubt if he would come back.
Benitez - not fit.
Souness - retired, and has said no further interest in management.
Curbishley - gets a nose bleed north of Watford.
Before anyone asks, I cannot offer an alternative to Kean unless you look at the Championship, or someone like Gordon Strachan, because we need someone with experience of English football.
Kean out.

Agree with everyone wanting Kean out as manager, but Morst offers 5 alternatives, none of whom will come anywhere near us under the current circumstances.
O'Neil - left a far bigger club than us because of finances.

People forget, that for all our turbulence, to many on the outside we are still an established team in the most exciting league in the world. There would be a whole host of experienced managers both here and in Europe who would throw their hat in the ring.
Obviously too late now, but in the summer for instance, Martin Jol was a very realistic appointment. Ancolotti/Hughes would be dream managers, but you never know until you ask. Curbishley, Laudroup, how about Mike Newall (all of the top of my head). Even old Sven looks like a football god compared to Kean.
This is the point, no matter who we get in. They can't surely be doing WORSE then Keans record, right? It'd take some doing.

.
they were right to sack sam but failed miserably - they should have brought in a top manager (obviously)
.
venkys thought they could save money by getting rid of top men and still run a club (obviously not)
.
that proves to me one thing - lack of funds.
.
they have lied and have been shown up. the tied has turned and very negative publicity is coming out. if the qatar foundation has approached venkys, and mr nixon has no reason to lie, they must sell.

regarding managers, i know as a fact that hughes has watched rovers several times recently. i also know that he would welcome a rovers return. he would however want total control of the team affairs. i am not mischief making either but i cannot reveal my source, who has been in contact with a senior member of hughes' management team.

'Judge us in a year'! ‘Judge us at the end of the Transfer window!' ‘Judge me when I have got my team in place!’ 'Substantial funds have been made available!' ‘Junior Hoilett will sign this week!’ ‘Phil Jones is not for sale!’ ‘We will make a marquee signing in the summer!’ ‘We’ll finish in the top 10!’ ‘There’s no way we will go down!’ The protest must be visible during the game (remember United wearing the green and gold?), that way the cameras cannot miss it.

I was disappointed that only Robbo came and acknowledged the fans after Wigan last week, he's a legend. I think Kean is trying to get division in the club at a time he should apologise to fans and show some humility. Compare him to Tony Pulis after Stoke lost to QPR who said they had some bad decisions but we weren't good enough and need to sort out our defence. Kean said we were excellent and gave it our all.

Come on rovers fans we have to show them we are willing to show up(season ticket in hand) and not go in to prove we need to be heard.

Here is a suggestion. SK is adamant that it is only a small proportion of fans that are unhappy with him/Venky's. Can a poll be conducted? If there was money to hire a plane is there money to hire a professional company to do a poll like Morri/Gallup. It would have to be done properly so when SK is asked about it he can't have any comeback (rigged etc.) I would love to hear is reaction when the BBC asks him about it on Match of the Day.

If they are showing no respect for the fans - and many many professional footballers show nothing but utter contempt for football fans because they think we're a bunch of sad b@stards) why show them unquestioning loyalty. It's a two way thing.
After the Wigan game the entire Rovers team apart from Robbo showed us absolutely no respect whatsoever.

Good start Andy - and could you please ask them to take advice from people who really know what they are talking about in Premiership football -i.e. not agents or employess with a vested interest. . Every Rovers fan would have told them not to appoint Kean after sacking Big Sam. We understood the desire to make the football attractive but it needed a manager with a "Proven and experienced CV" at this level of competition - the best and most watched league in the world. Kean did not have that CV. . Would they please just admit they were naive in this respect and the results have now proved that although many fans did try to give Kean every chance - but he is just not performing and has no proof on his CV to suggest he ever could. . 5 managers out there and available now could meet those CV criterias as well as playing great football - Martin O'Neil Mark Hughes Rafael Benitez Graham Souness Alan Curbishley I think if you do your research professionally you will find they have won a massive amount of trophies and / or promotions or considerably over achieved on the budgets given to them. This is why rovers fans are so frustrated because they know this. . Venkys - it really is a very simple situation to put right - remove Kean, thank him for his efforts and appoint one of the above managers and you would unite owners, club, manager and fans again and almost gurantee safety this season and progress next season. . 33rd................

A STAND IN..quick chorus of stand up if you want Kean out then stay stood up for the entire game, everyone. That will cause havoc with the stewarding and be a passive but visual to all protest...

Our team consisted of players like Grey , Todd , Neill , Savage , Reid , Kuqi . Hardly earth moving players . United had Rooney , Ronaldo , V D Sar , V Nistlerooy , Ferdinand . Apart from being a fantastic watch , it shows what you can achieve with avarage players and some proper managing .

Also look at the likes of Newcastle, Swansea and Norwich. Squads not a world away from ours and with similar budgets. Key difference being managed by real football men who have paid their dues in lower leagues, got their position on merit and earned their right to manage in the top league.

This agent is even worse than Anderson and all the rest rolled up together.
His advice to Hughes is the main reason he left the Rovers in the first place and the main reason that Hughes is out of work now. So as much as a lot of us would like to see Hughsey back there is zero chance of that happening.

Venkys are clearly stripping the club bare, there can be no other reason for the way they are running the club.
They have cut costs in every way
They have a surplus in transfer dealings. This will be boosted in January with the sale of Samba and Hoillett. Then they will take the parachute payment along with any other sales of players and scarper.
If main sponsers cannot get a reply who can ?
Kean was on Sky sports earlier putting Hoillett in the shop window as did with the sale of Jones. Saying he is 'desperate to sign' but if not he was sure there would be offers !
Yes, Hoillett looks as though he has been desperate to sign.
I cant see a way out of relegation with Venkys in charge but its after that that really worries me.
What will Blackburn be left with ?
A massive venkys out campaign must endure until changes are made,
As many media outlets as possible must be contacted about our plight
The Jack Straw idea is also a good one

Dear Steve,
I bet you couldn't believe your luck when you were offered the Manager's job even though you haven't got what would be regarded as the minimal experience for the role. I don't think anyone could blame you for taking the job but now 12 months on and with time to reflect, you must surely realize that it is beyond your capabilities.
You are officially the worst ever Premiership Manager and there is no sign that this is going to change soon. You constantly talk about people being behind what you are trying to do but none of the watching public nor any of the country's football pundits can fathom out what exactly it is that you are trying to achieve. You have taken a reasonable squad of players and turned them into the worst side in the league, a defence that hitherto were the backbone of the side now never look like being able to keep a clean sheet, and never do.
Aside from the playing side, where you are obviously out of your depth, your press conferences are now becoming a national joke - its great to be confident and to look for positives but at some point that needs to be tempered with some realism. While its right to say there are times we've had bad luck, its also fair to say there have been maybe even more times when we've been very very lucky - Arsenal, Fulham and Wigan spring to mind.
Even though this is a results oriented business I think people would be more tolerant if they could see visible progress or that the team is heading in a postive direction. Sadly, after almost 12 months in charge there is no sign of either.
Perhaps the worst aspect of this is the impact you are having on the fans and armostphere at games. Every single Rovers fan wants a winning team and not one fan would shed a tear if you resigned. The only difference in the fans is those who are willing to be vocal in their opposition and those who think this active demonstration has a negative impact on the team.
Although some fans cling on to hope, as we are all want to do, that you can turn things round all of the evidence suggests otherwise. I understand the temptation to just sit it out for the inevitable pay-off when you are fired which may be of short term financial benefit. However, longer term, if you have ambitions in the football business your resignatation and admission that the job was beyond you at this juncture may prove to be more valuable and could salvage what remains of your reputation.
Your resignation would also have the added advantage of pressing the club's owners to start getting more involved and their vision for the club would be much more clearly defined by the appointment of your successor.
Please for the future of Blackburn Rovers FC admit to your failings and resign now and save what remains of your credibility in the game. Please don't let your personal motives help in the demise of our football club.
Your Sincerely,
DallaRover

Also a quality letter to start the ball rolling from the LT also.
I feel the Venky,s would avoid any direct response due to their obvious lack of Football knowledge and that they would not accustomed to being pressured to being "up front" on their intensions and especially commiting themselves to making open promises that would hold them DIECTLY accountable over the coming months.
We all wait with great interest in their response to Wayne Wild and the LT.
