Blackburn Rovers blog: Time Venky's told the fans what's going on
10:10am Tuesday 19th July 2011 in Andy Cryer's Blackburn Rovers blog
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
THE time has come for Venky’s to start talking to Blackburn Rovers fans before they lose the support of the Ewood Park faithful once and for all.
Rovers fans have been growing understandably concerned by the lack of transfer activity this summer – after bold promises of a healthy transfer budget – and yesterday’s call for patience just doesn’t cut it.
Rovers travel to India tomorrow before carrying on to Hong Kong and, at the moment, their squad remains severely depleted. Recruitment is only going to become harder once they are on their travels.
The facts of the matter are Rovers need three to four new signings and Steve Kean has been working hard to deliver just that.
Venky’s have promised Kean would have the £16.5million from the Phil Jones transfer to spend, plus a healthy kitty on top, and until we are told otherwise we have to believe that is still the case.
So what exactly is the hold up? Kean wants Hugo Pavone and the Argentine wants to come. It is the same situation with Cedric Mongongu and yet neither look anywhere nearer to completing what should be simple deals.
The burden of responsibility on Kean’s shoulders at the moment is ridiculous. He has no chief executive, no chairman and is being relied on to convey Venky’s messages all by himself – he is even short of medical staff.
If the owners are struggling to conclude deals then, fine, that is understandable and they probably aren’t the only ones, but at least say that.
In the current confusion, it is no wonder Kean is staying quiet.
He is probably as bewildered as the rest of us as to what the club’s unpredictable owners are thinking.
They have given him his chance in top flight management but at the moment they are asking him to perform miracles. It is not fair on him – he needs back up.
Having just about stayed up last season, Rovers have since lost Jermaine Jones, Roque Santa Cruz, Mame Biram Diouf and Phil Jones – while just completing the signing of the inexperienced Myles Anderson, which had been arranged in January.
Rovers do have some very good youngsters coming through the ranks but to expect them to carry the club single handedly next season would be footballing suicide.
Kean knows that, the fans know that but fingers crossed Venky’s realise the harsh realities of Premier League football as well.
Officials still left at Ewood Park are doing their best to answer the countless questions but we have to come to the point where Venky’s themselves have to stand up and be counted. They can’t continue to hide behind the skeleton Rovers staff.
It has to be remembered a lot of rumours have absolutely no substance. Some fans were convinced the club were for sale the other week, only for a club statement to vehemently deny it.
Yesterday’s reports that Venky’s have frozen transfer funds until they pay money back to the bank are not new rumours, they have been doing the rounds for a while now and, for the moment, have no hard facts to them.
Rovers’ vague board reply in an official statement yesterday did little to ease concerns though, leaving more questions than answers, while the continual silence of Mrs Desai or the Rao brothers hardly helps either.
There is nothing sinister in the fact Rovers have not signed anyone yet alone, but the huge frustration and confusion surrounding Ewood at the moment merits real answers from the owners.
Fingers crossed the rumours are false, fingers crossed Venky’s are just waiting for the right players and fingers crossed Rovers will be able to enjoy a good season next time around.
They aren’t far off having a more than competitive squad but, without the addition of three or four players, you can’t help but fear another long season will be ahead.
If Venky’s don’t want to talk publicly then they need to employ someone experienced who will – similar to John Williams’ old role – because at the moment too much is being asked of Kean and his staff at Ewood.
The fans deserve, no need, a club voice and they need it quickly.

.
The fans are the ones who feel most deeply the passion, excitement, embarassment and even shame that attach themselves to a football club from time to time and they carry the greastest burden when things are going badly.
.
The sense of frustration amongst fans posting on here is palpable and is increasingly being expressed in angry tones.
.
Whilst my own view is tempered by a decision I made ages ago to give the owners until the end of August, as I cannot see any merit in pre-judging the situation when we do not have any facts, I can thoroughly understand those fans who feel neglected by the Club's new owners.
.
It is naive to expect the owners to make public their financial affairs but the lack of appointments to key positions at the Club at a critical time of pre-season is a major concern.
.
Whilst Steve Kean has many detractors, somewhat unfairly in my opinion, the possibility of him leaving the Club now and leaving us without any management is a truly frightening one as we would not attract any applications for the post as long as the capability of the owners to deliver on their promises, even the more recent, more modest ones, remains in doubt.
.
Even ignoring the despair of the fans at the current, apparent state-of-affairs, it is vital for the well-being of the Club that the owners make funds available to give Steve Kean the backroom staff he needs to do the job they have appointed him to do.
.
Beyond this the playing staff needs several additions before the end of the transfer window. The appointment of staff to assist Kean is the more urgent need however.

strated Rovers fans. Not posted for a while because the negativity had become boring...
I make no apologies for giving Venkys the benefit of the doubt from the off, why would I do otherwise?
As far as I was concerned they invested money to buy the club when no one else would, they were approved by John Williams and the Trust so the initial unfounded scepticism in some sections of our support was in my view, based on nothing but ignorance. However, having watched and waited for:
A Chairman or a Chief Executive
Shirt sponsor
A decent signing or three...
Only for none of them to materialise so far I'm now afraid to say, cynical about the chances of any of them turning up.
The Rovers Board statement yesterday was vague and slightly insulting - Rovers fans are a patient lot so the request for us to be more so was slightly disingenuous - I also didn't like it's attempt to lower expectations - after being boosted by the noises coming out of Kean at the end of last season - to now only expect two players. Possibly.
I've read the rumours going around and don't actually believe them for various reasons already mentioned by others - however whatever is currently going on at Ewood or has happened, something stinks to high heaven and I don't like it.

My opinion on what this might be:
1. Mark Hughes to return as manager? Absolutely out of the question. Story is a fantasy. No manager, especially not Hughes, would go near a Venky's owned Rovers. I would fall off my chair if this happened.
2. Kean to walk out/get the sack?
Possible. Kean must feel very alone right now. He can't buy the players he wants, and he's not got a team around him to provide the range of support he needs. To salvage his reputation(!), he could walk away. Also the trip to India must be a very sore point. It is a long way to travel, and in footballing terms, a waste of time as it's hardly a place to play competitive pre-season football.
3. A takeover.
I think this is quite likely. Venky's are stalling on transfers, which suggests any movement of assets has been temporarily frozen. The sale of Phil Jones just about covers their overdraft to the bank, so selling the club at a healthy profit would make business sense. However, perhaps the bank story has been purposefully released by Venky's to account for the transfer policy while negotiations carry on in secret with a buyer for the club.
But, more importantly, Venky's seem only now to realise the complexity of running a successful football team. Maybe they thought buying Rovers was a profit making venture, and maybe they will make a profit, but what they didn't realise is football is high, high risk with a complexity far beyond running poultry manufacturing.
Venky's out? Kean out? Hughes in?! By tomorrow I think we'll finally know the answer.

Perhaps they are putting their eggs in one nest...Blackburn Rovers Pune academy.
Your Nellie our Ryan has taken one of our young ones under his wing and he is mentoring him and also is getting a chance from Steve Kean.
His name is Tim Payne and he is currently a Junior All White team member and he's a promising forward and a standout Kiwi from the recent under-17 World Cup in Mexico.
He will fly to Lancashire in August, immediately after the under-20 World Cup in Colombia.
Unlike the majority of trialists who are only ever exposed to academy set-ups, Tim Payne, 17, will take to pre-season training with Blackburn's first team, under the eye of manager Steve Kean and beside the likes of All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen and Michel Salgado, who spent 10 seasons at Spanish giants Real Madrid.
This is what Tim said to one of our media outlets, "The opportunity I've got is really exciting, it's exceptional, and I'm looking forward to getting out there and training with the Blackburn squad," Payne told the Sunday Star-Times.
He's really excited about it but he has an international commitment first...Please welcome him, he's only 17..I still don't like Venky's and I still think they are wholly inappropriate football club owners...but its their money and their club.
Cheers.

At the moment the evidence that Venkys don't know what they're doing far far outweighs the evidence that they do.
The season starts three weeks on Saturday. They have six weeks until the window shuts to ensure that we won't be playing with a squad weaker than that with which we finished last season. For 2 to 3 of those weeks our "manager" will be conducting transfer negotitions whilst on his travels in the far-east whilst simultaneously preparing the defence for his drink-driving charge.
However, I fear that even if Venkys do realise and admit to making a hash of things they won't have the ability, will or time to rectify the shambles that has been created at the club.
Personally, I think the final gambits by Venkys will be played out in the January transfer window, by which time, given all that we have witnessed so far, the club will be firmly rooted at/near the bottom of the table.
The imminent release of a picture of a premiership quality striker wearing the shirt or of a reputable manager shaking the chairman's hand should be enough to dispel any scepticism.

there is so much rumour and conjecture at the moment, but to expect the owners to come on and provide a warts and all update on every issue is barmy old cack.
+
i can understand the concerns, i really can, but we should not expect something that simply cannot be delivered.
+
for me, there is a possility that some kind of adjustment in the overall ownership if the club could be in progress. but aside from that being a gut feel, there is nothing of certainty to back that feeling up. i therefore recognise that i may as well sit tight and see what transpires, as i cannot possibly affect the outcome. it would be nice if others did the same, rather than reacting so violently to things that they see as fact, when in actuality they are anything but that.

Venkys were sold the dream that they could buy the club cheap and then would plough enough money in to get to Champions League football, within 2 years, then sell the club for a massive amount.
What they didn't look at was most clubs have a ground where high cost housing could be built if they moved to another site, but Ewood Park is in an area where housing would be cheap if even built at all.
Rovers can never be worth anymore than the £40 odd million they spent, bar player assets, due to no value in the actual ground itself.
If so Venkys are probably trying to get rid of their stake as fast as possible, because they hadn't realised that you still have to pay out wages for 3 months whilst the seasons finished and they are out about £12 million for that alone in running costs.
They would be lucky to make even half their money back now.

The constant speculation over possible transfers is terrible. Why is it so hard to sign a freebie? Steve Kean seems to have all these targets but not the support from the board. I have supported Rovers for the last 19 years but this is probably the worst I have felt about the club. I am genuinely worried about the upcoming season!

Venkys have been a disaster from day one. True, they have been badly advised by agents, but they have been so far removed from reality they have swallowed anything that was told to them. Beyond this, it is clear that they simply cannot be trusted. They have lied time & again, changing their stories & claims at the drop of a hat. Their apologists have often put this down to "cultural differences" or "miscommunication"- it isn't, it's deliberate & underhand.
Kean is now exposed as being completely out of his depth, which was clear from day one. He is a joke, & unfortunately, so are Rovers under Venkys.
I don't know where we go from here, but even the "give 'em time" & "better than under John Williams" brigade must now have the gumption to see that we're in an awful, awful mess.

A Bank Mortgage unlike an overdraft is normally only repayable on demand if the borrower defaults on the agreed terms. If they have sort short term funding (overdraft) for long term debt they have only themselves to blame.
Where does that leave Rovers - a weaker squad than last year struggling to attract players at a price they can afford.
Come clean Venkys and to the Telegraph start investigating rather than writing a blog. The only winner so far I can see is Sam (presumably he got his pay off) and Phil Jones who will be at a properly run club in the future.

But things are really escalating now, I think having difficulties sealing a free transfer (FREE) with a player who wanted to join us was my final straw.
.
We have £16.5m + for Jones. We have been promised "signings that would excited the fans" and "a marquee signing", "Champions League football in 4 years time", "the healthiest transfer warchest in our history".
.
... and what have we got? Benjani... Myles Anderson, Hoilett still not re-signed, and NO solid transfer activity.

When people talk about "asset stripping" its the only major asset that is/was in rovers' asset register.
.
with jones gone and samba seemingly on his way, that will amount to a total of around £28m - which is well south of the £43-46m reputedly paid (inc debt).
.
realitically hoilett is too soon in his playing career and is not worth any more than £5m, n,zonzi you could get a bob or two for and then there is not much coin in the rest of the side.
.
in terms of bricks n mortar plus grass - ewood park is practically worthless and only suitable for a small low-mid price housing estate - no supermarket would buy it cos the access is dreadful and all supermarkets (ex sainsbury's) are already in blackburn.......the ONLY real piece of value is Brockhall. If Venkys do not own this - then I can't see how they would ever make a decent return on Rovers without investing heavily in the infrastructure (ie players) in the short to medium term.
.
As it stands Rovers is worth less today than last november - purely cos we have lost Jones and the team is a year older and not any better (apart from hoilett)
.
so if they are as some think keen on asset stripping - then i think that the walker trust has sold them a puppy.
.
and as for those are worried about dispatches on monday night it featured a drunk bryan robson and some daft thais who were making prepostrous claims that ferguson was "my brother" - much the same as what you could see mad drunks claiming down the local on a friday night.

hoilett at this stage is worth no more than £5m
robinson is in his 30s - how much did we pay for him? and he is now 3 seasons older.
n,zonzi - good player but no more than £3m coshe is now on a shortish contract.

who wants to buy our training academy?

what use is a 30k stadium in blackburn - apart from a local football team - who would be able to find a use for it.
