Blackburn Rovers blog: By splashing the cash, promotion is only option

TALK about after the horse has bolted. Blackburn Rovers were crying out for experience last season to save their season but Venky’s and Steve Kean failed miserably in their attempts to deliver.

In fact, all they did do was to get rid of most of the senior players, leaving a youthful and ill-equipped squad fighting the losing battle of staying in the Premier League.

Now, consigned to the Champ-ionship, it appears as though the owners are performing a complete u-turn on their past policy.

The signing of Danny Murphy and targetting the likes of Dan Gosling and Leon Best makes complete sense, but you can’t help scratching your heads at why it took so long for the penny to drop.

Best or Anthony Modeste? It is a no brainer. Best may be no world beater but he at least knows what English football is all about.

Had Kean and Venky’s looked at players of this ilk last season, rather than the ones they signed, perhaps we would not be in this situation now.

I think most supporters would acknowledge the capture of Murphy is finally a step in the right direction. But that is all it is. It is a start of a very long road back.

I have already stated that life is going to be even harder for the poultry giants to prove anyone wrong due to keeping faith with Kean. That decision still makes little sense to anyone.

Venky’s though this summer appear to be backing him with ‘big money’. If Murphy’s supposed wages are anything to go by, as well as the package offered to Best, there will be few clubs in the second tier spending bigger than Rovers.

Why now I hear you all say? The truth is I have no idea. If only they had properly committed last summer with the right signings and the necessary finance. The lack of logic sums up Venky’s reign.

One thing is for sure, the pressure has to be really on Kean from the off. You got the sense the beleagured boss has been unsackable for most of his Rovers’ tenure. Now, surely, that can’t be the case.

If this financial backing continues – remembering at the moment, it is only one player – then Kean simply has to succeed. For Rovers, it has to be promotion.

Failure to deliver would be a disaster for the club and that means Kean has to be accountable for results from day one.

Before anyone mentions it, I know he already should have been. But, this time, there is no excuse of not being backed and not being surrounded by his men. He is.

Shebby Singh has come in with the power to make big decisions. Perhaps, at last, there is someone at the club who will be prepared to take the necessary action.

Only time will tell.

Singh’s arrival has brought with it a couple of encouraging noises at least.

The manager believes he can succeed with his squad and his men in place so, if that continues to happen, it is up to him to prove it – and quickly.

Quite right Andy.......if only!

Most, and then eventually all (of us thick supporters) stated this almost from the off.
What the hell are they thinking!
But they just 'bulldozed' on.
Yes, we are in no position to pick and choose who leads this charge, but I am sorry words are cheap. So at pres. he has some job on to convince me he's the man (Singh).
Let me put it this way: if I bumped into him in a bar somewhere and he gave me all the shpeel he has already put out, there is no way I would loan him that £50, or put money into his gilt edged business venture!!!
Sorry but I have met many of that kind in my time.
Having said that I will sit back and see what traspires and if he comes good I will acknowledge it gladly.
It is going to take some mammoth effort to gloss over the previous 18 months and I am not too sure on what goals everyone expects in order to 'wipe the slate clean'.

"Now, consigned to the Champ-ionship, it appears as though the owners are performing a complete u-turn on their past policy."

Were Yakubu, Ribiero, Vucevic not experienced heads?

One signing on a free for an ageing player does not make a 'U-turn'.

Venkys were quite happy for BRFC to get relegated for the pure and simple reason that they cannot afford to run a premiership club. They can afford to run a championship club and now thats what they've got.

How can Kean stay and manage the team when the ENTIRE stadium wants rid of him? It's like Bernard Manning being at the million man march.

They should give him 5 matches before asking Old 'arry to take us back up but he wouldn't do it unless he gets an off shore account in the Punjab noone can discover.

Venky's penny pinching, pound foolish.

I think it may be too early to claim they're spending big - they've already released well over what Murphy's wages are reported to be in the guise of Salgado and Grella. Add to this any number of players from Olssen, Hoilett, N'Zonzi, Yak, Robinson, Givet, Dann etc. and have they really been "spending big"?

We have to be careful here that we don't do the opposite of the media last year - by focussing on the outgoings they failed to realise Kean spent nearly £20m. This season, if we sign Best and Gosling for £3m and Murphy for nowt, but get £900k for Hoilett, £3m for Olssen, £1m for Yak, £4m for N'Zonzi et al. can we really claim to have been "big spenders"? Especially when their combined wages will be pretty substantial...

(Btw if any one thinks those valuations are too low, remember we're Championship now. Confusing, isn't it!)

Why overspend to give an amateur manager another chance to fail while also alienating supporters for another season?

What is a success and failure for the manager now? No one in their right mind will accept him as a credible football manager. Why has no other team come in to poach such a talent?

The only money I and many other Rovers fans want spending is the money to sack Steve Kean

They havnt spent any **** money.

A lot of money was freed up on the wage bill last month when halve a dozen players contracts came to an end(salgado, grella, etc...), this has made it poss to pay murphys wages, next week they receive over 4million from the p jones deal and they are likely to receive around 10 mill in playet sales, I bet you now they end up receiving a lot more than they spend on transfer targets this summer(and thats without getting into parachute payments!).

Theres nothing in that interview that hasnt been said. He's watched championship football and that's how he knows about the teams, that's hardly surprising, he's from Malaysia.

His actions (or inactions) will speak for how he performs in his vague new role of power.

Quite right maltese blue and white the radio interview showed what complete clowns are now running the club. They are treating the club as though its a game played on playstation they are all inept as will become clear several games in.The main problem at Ewood is and has been for the past eighteen months a nomark trainer who thinks he,s a manager unfortunately we have nomark owners who think likewise,as for Shifty Singh he may bluster that he can make big decisions but it will only be with the nod from pune.So for me nothing has changed and when are we going to hear some moral boosting bull from the newly appointed Mr Agnew I wait with baited breath!

To be honest I think he seems all right.

All he has done from a negative perspective so far is said Steve Kean needs to be given a clean slate, whereas for most of us we've already crossed the Rubicon with that particular individual.

Shebby had to say this clean slate though, because the owners have told him to. He can't start a new job and then immediately do the opposite his boss has asked him to.

Shebby's come out to face the music, I don't see anyone else doing that. I mean where is our new "communications director" / "general manager"? Those people are the joke not Shebby.

I'm hoping that he is the start of change that we all want to see. I'm guessing Shebby isn't Steve Kean's biggest fan. He's even said as much.

Kean should be given no more than six games to convince Singh and the owners that he is worth persevering with and the owners ought to already have a shortlist drawn up and contingency plans in place for when he flops.

It is far more than he deserves.

As far as I'm concerned,Kean has done enough damage in the last 18 months. The strife we've been through won't be forgotten. If we have any chance of promotion next season,he has to go now.Unfortunately our beloved owners are to stubborn to sack him.

I am 37 and have been a rovers fan since 1981 but have for the first time lost all interest in the club which is heartbreaking for me as I really wanted to go and watch a lot of games this season.
The decision to keep kean as manager and the Venkys still in charge has finished me as a rovers fan I really thought if we got relegated that Kean would be gone thats why I did not care when we got relegated.
I just want the club I have loved all these years back it has been said many times but you the fans need to boycott the club untill that scumbag has gone or if not you need to make kean and the Venkys feel so unwelcome and intimidated that they will not want to come to the ground anymore.
If kean has a bodyguard im quite sure one bodyguard wont be able to stop 500 odd fans.

Dann might well have been a lot **** than most of us imagined but I disagree entirely about Robbo...the Wigan game for example??

In amongst a season littered with flop performances from almost all our 'best players' you had Robbo nursing a bleeding head and coming up to make it 3-3 in the dying seconds of a crucial 6-pointer, if that doesn't show his dedication to the cause I don't know what would.

For me that image was the only one I saw all season of a player showing any kind of spirit for Rovers.
