Blackburn Rovers Column: Uncertainty from Rao sums club up
8:01am Thursday 24th May 2012 in Blackburn Rovers blogs
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
GLAD that made eve-rything clearer then. Or maybe not.
You wouldn’t have thought it would be possible for a football club owner to make a public statement and for the supporters to be in even more confusion than they were before.
Well, that is what has happened with Venkatesh Rao’s Sky Sports interview about Blackburn Rovers.
By saying nothing though, Rao’s vague interview told us ever-ything. It basically admitted the club has no clear direction.
His refusal to publicly back Steve Kean was the biggest proof yet that no final decision has been made on the under fire manager’s future.
The only real positive to come out of that for a lot of Rovers fans is that Kean’s position appears far from safe. They say it’s the hope that kills you though.
The Lancashire Telegraph has been reporting for weeks now that there is a split within the club about the way forward and surely this bizarre interview backs that up.
The frightening thing is he suggested it could take a month to ‘rectify’ things. The season starts in less than three.
How hard can it be to either back or sack a manager and get on with planning for the season? The uncertainty surrounding the club at the moment is absolutely ridiculous.
I’m not going to pretend I still think Steve Kean should still be the manager. Everyone knows I don’t and that is based on results, his record in the transfer market and his public statements.
It would appear the majority of fans and even a lot within the club agree the best way forward is without Kean at the helm. It would take a brave man to suggest otherwise.
But, if the owners want him, that is their prerogative and we will have to get on with it and hope he somehow performs the miracle and proves us all wrong. Granted, that looks an impossible task. For them not to know is crazy.
At the moment, everyone is in limbo. The fans, the players, board members and even the manager. This is just unacceptable, and some ask why the club has become a laughing stock.
What self-respecting player would even consider joining Rovers at the moment?
No wonder the likes of Junior Hoilett (pictured) and Steven Nzonzi will be catching the first train out of here.
In all the chaos, it appears that Venky’s have forgotten this is the supporters’ club. Without them, they are flogging a dead horse and the longer this farce continues the more they are disenfranchising the fans.
How can the owners not know what they are going to do yet? It is not as though relegation has come as a surprise to any of us is it?
The longer they dally and the longer they stay in the “process of thinking”, the more disastrous next season is already looking. You can’t help wondering what can be so difficult?
Make your mind up on the manager – one who has taken the club to relegation – and then appoint a chairman and get on with it.
The longer the confusion reigns the more proof we are all getting – not that we need any – that Venky’s have little clue what they are doing at the moment.
Maybe they are best concentrating on their poultry empire and selling the club to someone who might be able to add some stability again.
Venkatesh Rao said all they wanted was to make the supporters happy. There is one swift and decisive move that would go some way to doing that.
This is all just an insult to the Ewood Park faithful.

E,SHOCKING whatever adjectives we use it is obvious that the Venkey's are too distant from the club to ralise the full extent of the predicament.Steve is correct we cannot wait a month the manager should be getting a team structure together now he cannot do that unless he has the the owners full financial backing.Simon Garner's forecast that we could do a Bradford may be truer than we think if nothing is sorted soon.I hear that the Venkeys are spending 15 million pounds on modernising their production plant so maybe their energies lie in sorting out their bread and butter industry before they commence to look at their play thing-Blackburn Rovers F.C. pride of Lancashire.

As for the 'Manager' they appointed, I've run businesses for foreign owners and they let the local management get on with it; if I did not produce results, I got sacked (simple). I didn't fly off to H.O. in Asia every month / quarter - have you not heard of video-conferencing? Clearly Steve Kean is more than the football manager / coach; I believe he is the Chief Executive and the owners are reluctant to sack him because of that (why have a "Deputy Chief Executive"? Who was the Chief Executive?); who, actually, is the Chief Executive today? Why is a Director of Communications so silent? If both were on my staff they would be getting their P45's for "non-performance" or even incompetence.
What is the solution? Well it is clear to see - the owners should sell the club now. If they don't want to lose face by sacking "their man" then sell up (or tell us the club is up for sale at least), now! Cut your losses - it is not rocket science, is it?
On a personal note, the only way supporters can send a message to the owners is by voting with their feet - stay away, don't renew season tickets until things change and don't buy merchandise. What a sad state of affairs - come back Jack Walker, come back Bryan Douglas.

I have refrained from commenting due to my living in NZ for the past 39 yrs, that is not to say that I have not followed the Rovers with a passion that my Dad instilled in me when just a small child.
I was in Blackburn a couple of weeks ago and attended the Rovers Wigan game.
I have a few comments to make now, firstly Kean has to go followed closely by the incompetent owners, how this charade has gone on for so long beggars belief.
To say I am angry is a complete understatement,I am bloody furious at what has transpired at Ewood, such a proud club that has given its supporters so much to be proud of in the past.
I will always support Blackburn Rovers as it is in my blood and also in my heart no matter what division they play in.
On saying this I must say that if I was still local I would not be buying a season ticket,I would not purchase anything from the shop and Iwould only attend away games.
My final word is to the Burnley supporters who tend to come on to these forums,we as Rovers supporters are in the words of my nephew guaranteed 6 points next season when we play you and that is one point for each finger.
Good Night to all my fellow B.R.S. ARTE ET LABORE.

Not to us, no.
To them its a body shock. You must have seen his confused state on Sky.
Its my belief Andy they thought Champions League not Champions ship...poor deluded people...brain fagged by Kean's lies.
Remember the two brothers wanted Kean out in January, its her thats clinging on to him for whatever reason...money, power I can't say more than that...go figure. Kean has always been too sure he will not be sacked, too sure Venkys won't sell. Now the whole lot in Pune are so confused they can't make a rational realistic descision.
That guy was genuinely concerned but his hands are tied. She ignores her peoples advice, she allows Kean to choose board members. Something is not right about the setup, thats something we the fans know.
Scudmore is not Interested and I have wrote twice to the FA..no replies.

More than ever, now is the time to keep a sense of perspective and do whats needed to get the club back on its feet. Hoillett, Nzonzi, Robinson and now Yak and Pederson rumoured to be looking to leave the sinking ship that is the HMS Rovers.
If you need help and direction Venkys, help and direction is available here from experienced people who know how to run a successful club, you got rid of the ones that were already here, granted, but even accepting that you may have your had your own reasons at the time to do so, you must NOW accept that you are lost, you need help, By your own admission yesterday, you admitted that you were shocked by the relegation and confused.
One can only assume that means confused what to do next, how to repair the damage and get the club back to where it was in the EPL. Well there are people here like Mr Khan and others who would be happy to pool their resources and work with you to achieve that.
You must know yourself by now, that the people you have surrounded yourselves with to take this venture forward have not only failed you, but brought the Venkys brand into disrepute. You are now globally known as the destructors of one of the oldest clubs in England and that cant be good for your many businesses.
So please, if you wont sell and leave, at least have the good grace and sense to admit mistakes were made and accept the help from those who love and care for this great club that you claim to have "fallen in love with".
Do it now, before it is too late to do anything else apart from sell up and leave with your tail between your legs or nothing is left of the club, because believe me, the club will not be the only thing that will be irreparably damaged. One can only imagine the damage that will do to your global standing and brand recognition that you sought to achieve when you purchased the club.
Regardless what some might say, its still not too late to make it right.

Day 4 of your new role in which you are supposed to manage the messages coming out of the organisation that employs you.
So did you oversee the content of the Sky interview? Is its content setting the standard that you are going to operate to?
You need to get a grip and very quickly Mr Agnew - go down to Brockhall armed with the overwhelming and factual evidence that your friend Mr Kean is destroying our club and tell him he has to go. TODAY, NOW.
Not only is he threatening your future livelihood Mr Agnew and your professional credibility but also the jobs of many of the staff at the club and its suppliers. Or is he the completely self centred, delusional fool that many believe he is.
If you want more evidence of the complete disdain supporters have for Mr Kean send a questionnaire NOW to all of your current and past season ticket holders with one simple question - "do you want Mr Kean to have any kind of role at your club?"
Now ask yourself - how many people will tick the YES box. You know the answer already dont you.
He will never win the confidence nor support of the overwhelming majority of supporters purely because of his behaviour - never mind his ability as a 'manager'.
In any other sector - and at any other football club - he would have been sacked - so why is he still in a job and why are people like you protecting him. Have you no shame either?
Lets see what Day 5 of your new role brings - not holding my breath.

Surely the one for the Premiership should of started with these 2 basic questions:
1). Do you actually know how to run a football club?
2) Do you realise that if you finish in the bottom three you are relegated?
If a potential owner can not provide evidence to answer either of these 2 questions, then surely they are not Fit and Proper'.
Steve Kean is the most hated figure in Lancashire. He should resign.
If he doesn't resign he should be sacked. If he can't be sacked, there is a conflict of interest (that is he is on the Board) and that should be investigated by either some football related body, or a Financial one.
I will not go watch/buy mechandise/etc whilst a clueless manager with no credible CV, who slanders previous employees, who is obviously not mentally stable (think back to that Iraqi PR man who said Iraq was on top in the 2nd Gulf War when on camera US tanks were driving past him in Baghdad - at least he was under threat of execution when telling lies), and has a pathetic win record and history in the transfer market, is still in charge.
My first wish is that Keane leaves, my 2nd is that Venkys sell. My third is that the first comes true and Venkys take their heads out of their backsides and pump some money into the club, to a. recruit a board who have a clue, b. recruit a decent manager, and c. to fund our escape upwards from the Championship.
If nothing changes, then I even wish Burnley the best of luck against us.

So you're all in shock, are you Venkatesh? Well, let me tell you a thing or two.
Within a matter of weeks of the Raos taking over the club, some supporters were telling you that you were taking the club in the wrong direction. You did nothing. You carried on regardless. Towards the end of your first season, more and more fans were doubting your actions. We missed out on relegation by the skin of our teeth. You carried on regardless.
This season the majority of fans were telling you that things at the club had to change. Towards the end of this last season, the whole ground was telling you that things were dire. I don't think one fan was supporting your actions. Everyone, everyone was against the way you were running the club. We went down and you did nothing.
Well, actually, that's not true is it? You didn't just ignore the fans concerns, you didn't "not do anything" - you fought against anyone who dared tell you to change tack. We've had fans marching and staying in the ground after the game, because it was agreed that they could do that. What happened - the speaker system volume was turned up and they were drowned out. You banned banners inside Ewood in order to silence any protests. More than that, we saw the incredible sight of the stweards going into the crowd and physically confronting angry and worried fans. When Paul Hunt asked you to consider that the club was being run badly and you needed to heed the message, you did nothing until the letter became public, then you sacked him. When the whole ground was telling you that Kean had to go, you backed him. When Jerome A. launched a tirade against the rover's fans on national TV, we heard nothing from you - in effect, you backed him as well.
So you now portray this image of poor Indian owners who didn't expect this outcome. How far from the truth could that possibly be, when you actively fought against any voice who wanted to talk to you in good faith? Politicians were willing to talk to you, the sponsors were willing to talk to you and employees at the club were desperate to talk to you - they probably still are. You shunned the lot of them. Fans forum members went out to Pune and they did talk to you, but you lied to them.
Now then, we are in a position where season ticket sales are falling faster than ever before. Some fans reckon it's because people don't want to put money into your pockets. Well, the truth is that many of the people not renewing are doing so because they have been trying to get the message over to you, that you were putting the club into very dangerous waters, - but you have fought that viewpoint every step of the way, so the only other option they see, is to let you do, what you are intent on doing. There's nothing else they can say.
All this has been coming to a head since you bought the club. A club that was one of the most friendly clubs in the land has become a place of disappointment and hatred. You might argue that some of these actions haven't been ordered directly from Pune, but it's your club, it's your responsibility. You knew of the problems but fought against anyone telling you about them. You have to take responsibility for the last 18 months. There is another thread on here asking whether the fans would forgive you if Kean was sacked. Well, many fans would indeed come back to Ewood in the hope that you have changed direction. As for trusting you ever again, many would say "never". Many would say trust has to be earned and there's a hell of a long way to go before that happens.
My advice to you would be sell up. Get out because you have no future here.

If Kean stays, the only way to make his position untennable will be threats toward him and his family to the point at which the FA will not allow the man to stand on a touchline being pelted with rotten vegetables and fruit every single game.
This hardfaced b@stard will not stop and how many Rovers fans might top themselves if he remains in charge? Utilitarianism states that the pure misery brought about by Keans existence across thousands of people is enough to warrant his removal.

I have been supporting Rovers since the ealy 70's and have seen many ups and downs. Throughout those times I always believed in the club and was proud to call myself a Rovers fan.
My father passed away in 1991 and I always felt sad that he missed the Walker era and the glory that brought with it.... I'm glad he's not here to see this shambles.
Walker's trust should hang their collective heads in shame that they allowed this to happen. Has anyone challenged whether the Venkys actually met the criteriea Jack laid out to protect the club from precisely this scenario?

Demonstrations and boycotts won't make any difference to the venkys, they just make the club less attractive to potential buyers.
We won't survive another season with so much animosity so someone has to do something. It seems impossible that anyone would buy Rovers in it's present state, there is definitely no chance of anyone investing in the club to buy new players.
Hopefully the Brsit or any other interested party can open a line of communication with the venkys and persuade them to part with the Rovers for nothing. They don't seem to have lost any money and would probably be glad to be rid of all the abuse.
interested parties like the Brsit and Seneca don't have enough money to run a premiership club, but perhaps they could stabilize the club and prevent us from going further down the pan.
There now seems no way round having to sell players to survive instead of buying players to succeed.

We all know that Anderson has been running the club. The cynical sacking of Sam, manoeuvring Kean into the manager’s seat, the outing of John Williams, the strange transfer dealings, Venky’s taken to the cleaners on agent’s fees, the appointment of a coach (John Jensen) who Kean did not know, the ‘unsackable’ tag, Kean saying ‘My job is safe – I have never felt safer’, the refusal (inability) to sack him in the face of his (mis)management and appalling record as we hurtled towards relegation....Kean bringing the club into disrepute with his foul-mouthed video rant, the drink-driving, the unrelenting protests by the fans, the refusal to listen to any voice of reason, ….and all the while Venky’s lying low and saying nothing.
Are they powerless to do anything until Anderson/Kentaro/Zah
avi give the orders?
Things have gone spectacularly wrong for Anderson (though any supporter with a modicum of common sense could have told him his plans would not work) and now he is in a quandary.
Has he told Venky’s he will come up with a plan to move forward ‘within the next few weeks’? Which would explain why they cannot do anything or speak to anyone, apparently snubbing an invitation from BRSIT.
The glaringly obvious thing to do immediately after relegation, if they were in control, was for Venky’s to speak to as many people here who could help them with the way forward. Instead they come out with another bizarre statement that the club ‘is in confusion’ (too right it is) and things will become clearer in a month! We don’t have a month. Indeed, we have already lost two critical weeks.
I am becoming more and more convinced this is the appalling situation we find ourselves in and, if it is the case, then we are hurtling uncontrollably not just towards another relegation but towards administration. And there is nothing we can do about it.
Where is the FA? Where is the Fraud Squad?

According to reports, the club's Indian owners are planning a series of cutbacks as the threat of administration also looms along with relegation. (AFP Photo)
NEW DELHI: A little less than two seasons after they acquired Blackburn Rovers amid much fanfare, Venky's may be trying to wash their hands of the club. Soon after Rovers were relegated from the Premiership - to jeering by the home fans - on Sunday, rumours swirled about the possible bailout by the Pune-based poultry giants, seeking buyers in Asia and the Middle East.
Agency reports quoting club sources however said that they are not looking for a buyer in Europe. Reports also said that two consortiums are apparently prepared to invest in the club but added that they will not be paying Venky's for the club.
Venky's, who bought the Lancashire club for £23 million ($37 million) in November 2010, becoming the first Indians to own an EPL club, said they will speak to reporters on Thursday. According to reports, the club's Indian owners are planning a series of cutbacks as the threat of administration also looms along with relegation. Officials at Blackburn are gearing up for a redundancy of up to 40 per cent.
From first promising to sign Ronaldinho and David Beckham to mulling selling off current squad players like Junior Hoilett, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Steven Nzonzi and Paul Robinson, Venky's and Rovers have indeed come full circle. Life in the lower divisions means less scope of revenue and slashed season-ticket rates as opposed to the lucrative English Premiership.
But Blackburn Rovers are not alone. Lakshmi Mittal co-owned Queens Park Rangers too face Premiership relegation, while Spanish club Racing Santander were the first to be relegated from the top-flight Liga ( Spanish league) this season. Santander's owner, the Bahrain-based Hyderabadi Ahsan Ali Syed, is reportedly absconding, wanted by Interpol in a loan fraud.
Why Indian owners simply turned a blind eye as the management floundered at the proud small-town club with modest means but fiercely-loyal fan base, is baffling. Unlike Santander, the problems at Blackburn - Premiership winners in 1994-95 - had been long known and the fans made it amply clear each weekend by chanting against their manager Steve Kean and owners Venky's abject lack of involvement.
In official correspondence made public immediately after Rovers' drop from the Premiership, the club's deputy CEO Paul Hunt had asked owner Anuradha Desai in December 2011 to act before the situation reached such a pass.
Hunt had written asking Desai to "make some significant changes to save the club, perhaps from relegation but also perhaps from administration".
There was the issue of an outstanding repayment of a £10 million loan taken from Barclays . In January this year, Hunt even pointed out the need for additional funding to pay wages.
While Venky's did eventually clear the debt, it had forced KPMG, the club's auditors, to "put as many obstacles as they can in the way of signing off the accounts due to their concerns".
Hunt wrote: "We continue to try and work with Barclays but they are very quickly losing patience as we cannot give answers. We have been forced to agree to additional spending against our wishes (Christmas hampers, sponsoring the Princes Trust event etc) and I am fearful that the situation will only get worse. The position with the finances is a cause for grave concern."
Hunt asked for "regular visits to meet the owners in India". Six months after his appointment as deputy CEO, Hunt has still not met Desai. He also asked for at least one representative of Venky's turn up for "at least a quarter of games". The Indian owners have rarely been seen at Ewood Park in the past 12 months and were absent when Blackburn's relegation was confirmed. This proved the last straw for the fans.
