Blackburn Rovers blog: Time to call truce

THIS may sound controversial to some but Blackburn Rovers’ best, and only, chance of staying in the Premier League lies with their owners Venky’s.

Yes, their first 12 months in charge of the football club has been an unmitigated disaster and there are few signs of things improving.

But if they don’t improve we might as well all start planning for trips to Doncaster, Bristol City and Burnley now.

All these calls for ‘Venky’s out’ are understandable – as the calls for Steve Kean out are – but if the Indian poultry farmers take them to heart then Rovers are left up the creek without a paddle.

We need them to come to Ewood Park, start seriously planning for January and, more important than anything, invest significant cash into the transfer pot to give Steve Kean’s men a chance of surviving in the Premier League.

Would you do that when you have thousands screaming abuse at you every time you show your face? Most people would certainly think twice.

Don’t get me wrong, I get the anger, I get the concern and I get the frustration. We are all feeling it at the moment.

But, with little more than a fortnight left before the window opens, there is no white knight ready to ride into town in time to solve these current woes.

The reason why Rovers are where they are is a combination of lack of investment in the squad in the summer and some very poor signings. Venky’s and boss Steve Kean have to take equal responsibility for that if the claims all signings were the managers are to be believed.

Venky’s have already backed their manager vocally but they need to back him with cash now and if they don’t then their commitment to this club is there for all to see.

It is obvious there are discussions going on with Barclays Bank, although predictions of financial armageddon seem way over the top, but if Venky’s are as wealthy as they claim to be start putting your own money into this mess.

They need to know a football club in the Championship would be almost worthless to them.

At the moment it is like a stand-off, with the owners in India – after a bad experience at Wigan – and the supporters here.

We need them here and we need them doing what they shuld have done a long time ago, and that is leading from the front.

I’m not asking anyone to cheer manically the next time they see either of the Rao brothers or Anuradha Desai, I’m just echoing yesterday’s call for a truce to give them the chance to sort things out.

If they decide not to take this ‘last chance’ then that is up to them. But at least we would have tried.

Too late, the damage was done as soon as BR was sold to these charlatans. Quite frankly i'm embarassed to admit I follow Rovers at the moment.

The dynamic duo of Kean & Venkys would need to perform a minor miracle to regain the trust of many fans.

I may stand corrected by the close season but if this pack of jokers are still at the helm come May I firmly expect to say goodbye to the Prem and a few wilderness seasons in the Champ.

Andy Cryer should report things as they are 'from a paying supporters' stance not from a ' reporters freebies stance!
Money is hard to come by in a small East Lancashire town and the fans paying at the turn gates each week deserve better!!!
Kean and his colleagues walk away 'win or loose' with thousands of pounds in their back pockets not so the fans and its about time Kean and especially the Venky's understand this!!
The Venky's bought a Football club without any knowledge of its workings or indeed its 'once' proud background - their first steps getting shut of an exerienced Manager and then the best CEO in the Premiership - they fully deserve what they have got frm the majority of supporters and that is 'no repect' - if they are not big enough tostand up and be counted they should sell up and move on - personally I have no time for them!!
As I previously said let them put their money where their mouth is and prove their true intent for the Club!!

Don't forget that we are in this position with the fans because Venky's have not shown any determination either now or recently to sort this mess out as we spiral towards the championship, and I am not sure that if they did give Kean the money that he and Anderson would do a good job of it. He has proved he cant hack it so far. They are the ones that gave Kean a new contract that looked like it was done to spite the fans. Venky's should take the initiative and hold out an olive branch to the fans and show some determination to siort the club out and you will find that the fans will respond accordingly. They just want Venk'ys to sort the club out and there is nothing wrong with that. It's no good them sulking about some abuse as they should realise what they have done and where we are now now. These fans would support Venky's through thick and thin if Venky's made the right moves and at least showed they were trying hard. These fans are some of the best in the business therefore come on Venky's reach out to the fans and give them someting to support you for and they will. Carry on as you are and we are all doomed.

Rovers til I cry says...

Venky's have been in charge for over 12 months and have done nothing but let our once proud club silde towards the mire.

What is the point in keep writing these pathetic give them a chance articles. They've had it over and over and responded by keeping clueless Kean in charge.

If Venkys have not realised there is a problem by now they never will, and giving a transfer kitty to Steve Kean is tantamount to wasting more cash we appear not to have.

If Venky's take umbridge at the fans chants should we worry that they might go away and do nothing, after all since they have been in charge that is all they appear to have done with any conviction.

They won't sell because with the state we are in, they would probably now make a massive loss, so the pressure needs to be kept up to get them to change the manager, which I firmly believe will change our fortunes.

I hope the Venkys know that miracles dont happen in the premierleague.

If they think planting articles is going to get us points in the table, then someone needs to explain football to them.
-
If they think it is going to keep the fans coming while this club is continued to be run unto the ground and into the championship then someone needs to explain the law of football support to them.

We will stay away until you either do a 360 degree and turn this around, which I am afraid for the chairwomen this involves sacking Steve Kean. Or until you sell up to someone who knows how to run a football club

If you were a wealthy and highly successful business-person who had spent 23m on acquiring a football club and a minority of the fans not only treated you with a complete lack of respect but actually abused you incessantly in the flesh and in the local and national media would you pay any attention to them?

The whole football world knows that the owners have made mistake after mistake after mistake, starting with the dismissal of Allardyce, but the ignorant and disrespectful nature of the protests was never going to do anything other than alienate the very people on whom the future of the Club depends.

The protesters have shot themselves in the foot by their own ignorant actions which have alienated the owners to the point where they probably fear for their own safety and all fans will now have to suffer the consequences of life outside the Premier League.

Disaffected fans may not like it but the Club belongs to Venkys and only they will determine how much, if any, money will be spent on strengthening the squad. They earned that right by paying for the Club when no-one else was interested.

It seems to be the case that the Club is now going to pay lip-service to the idea of communication with the 'leaders' of the 'organised' protests but it also seems to be the case that these 'leaders' are simultaneously promoting the idea of 'non-organised' protests.

They have not been able to carry the dissatisfied fans with them and are aware that, for all their undoubted efforts, they have no control over the minority of fans who are determined to vent their anger by further vile abuse of the owners. Some of this minority of fans now believe that the 'leaders' of the protests have somehow sold out by entering into dialogue with the Club.

If there is any hope for the future of the Club it can only come from a decision on the part of the owners to invest in the Club and to do this they must be confident that they will not face the vila abuse which has pertained to date.

Sadly, I do not believe that the 'leaders' of the protests have the desire or ability to change the attitude of their 'followers.

We are probably going to be relegated, but it is not certain either with or without Steve Kean. The Venkys have made huge errors, but I can't see who would buy the club at present. They may learn from their mistakes - that's our best hope. A truce would be good idea. At present Kean still has many of the players. If he loses them, we are in big trouble, and the poisonous atmosphere could increase the chances of that happening.

Venkys you are ruining our club.
Steve Kean you are ruining our club.
The squad of players is also to blame too.

Last seasons team was probably not as strong as this seasons team.
We had Diouf, De Santos, and Jones last season.
This season we have Rochina, Yakubu and Lowe that have all come in.
With the exception of Jones I do not think the squad is any less capable of keeping us up.
I just feel a lot of the players' body language and performances this season suggest we are not gonna get out of this mess.
Yes.. Steve Kean needs to go but he will not walk. I think he needs to get his team selection and formation right before he does anything.
Yakubu has done really well this season and would do even better with someone to play off.
The only reason Kean will not play a 4 4 2 formation is because he has not got the players to do it.
Sadly, our team lacks a natural leader (Jones was that last season and he was only 18). The players look like they are all waiting for someone else to get hold of the game when I wish someone would just grow some cahoonas and be the first to do it. This would give both the fans and other players a lift too.
Our midfield is where we need to strenghten.
Dunn is too slow and cannot last 60 minutes, Nzonzi is another David Batty, Pederson gives the ball and fouls away far too much and Hoilett looks as though he does not want to be here (he is the only one of the four of any class).
The question is who do we get in?
We have owners with no ambition and a manager who has no balls to tell the fans what is really going on behind the scenes and that he has no money to spend.
At least if he did that he would get a bit more respect from me.
The fact that he is staying does not suprise me. Would you walk out on a weekly wage or job that you are never gonna get again in your life!! His missus is probably telling him the same. He is getting as much cash in the coffers as he can and as long as he keeps backing up the owners they will keep him in a job.
I really hope we can get out of this mess, starting this weekend against West Brom.

I agree with what you are saying Andy, however what gets me is these people (Venkys) seem to have a touch of arragance about them as if in some way we (the fans) are below them.

Now I understand within their own culture they are considered some what upper-class, however this is the United Kingdom and they can not expect people to have the same respect for them when they have not shown any back.

On speaking to a few people that went to Pune to see the Rao family they said that they where sort of made to jump through different levels of the food chain before they could finally meet the main family, so this being true what hope has anyone of getting through to these people at any level?

Why should rovers fans all act like dancing dogs in order to intice these people to come to the table and sort this mess out?

After all these people came into our lives and our club and not the other way round.

Until I see any evidence to the contrary, this remains the only constant in the whole sorry episode?

What is it with our Telegraph reporters these days? Its bad enough that we hear everything through the National press first, but now "Lets not upset Venkys" is unbelievable.
The reason Kean and Venkys are hated by the supporters is their own doing, something you gloss over.
Its about time your spineless reporting actually asked hard, yes HARD and Tough questions of the Chuckle Brothers and Lady Desai and didn't appear to just print statements handed to them.
Man Up as the modern term goes, before your newspaper starts being boycotted as well.

Yet again Lus you are asking people to trust Venkys, why on earth should anyone - give me one positive to justify it - apart from declaring there is no one else. That smacks to me of defeatist i.e accept the rod thats thrashing you, because an alternative one MAY be worse! No thanks - disrespect is repayed by disrespect.

A very sensible comment, I posted my view a few weeks ago which was similar to yours. Firstly if I had mega money the last thing I would buy is a football club, the disgusting behaviour of the brain dead uneducated morons who call themselves supporters (which they certainly are not) are a disgrace to the club and the memory of the late, great Jack Walker. I have supported and loved the rovers for more than 55 years and how ever this season pans out it will be my last. This is no longer a sport of dreams it is more like a sport of night mares. Sorry Andy, I cannot agree with your conclusions at all.

Venky's own the club. The fans are the customers of the club - although most of us have a passionate loyalty to the club which makes us not merely customers but stakeholders as well.

However Venky's call the shots. They have appointed Steve Kean to run the team - and apparently - at least on the face of it - still think he is the best man for the job -"Brilliant" quotes etc., and the recent pay rise. They have managed to dismantle the management infrastructure at the club without replacing it with a full professional team running the operation.

If BRFC was a restaurant that I happened to like and new owners took over with a new "thoughtful and hard working" chef whose previous experience was serving in a KFC, and got rid of the cleaners and waiters, I'd probably take by custom elsewhere.

However it isn't a restaurant and there is only the one BFRC and I want it to survive. Venky's and their appointee Kean have have had plenty of opportunity to turn things around. Transfer windows wasted with players let go with not a lot of talent coming in and a distinct lack of Venky money coming in. Plently of time to have sorted a proper management structure. Plenty of time for Kean to prove himself worthy of the job.

This poor lack of progress has come when others - sponsors, fans forum, local business - and indeed yourself, Andy - have tried to have dialogue and make suggestions with no real outcome.

If there is to be some salvation for the club with Venky's as owners, then an immediate change of manager, setting up a proper administration and the provision of real funds for January is needed. If not the only way for them and us is down.

Venky's call the shots - it's up to them to prove they mean business after 12 months failure, not for the fans to make them comfortable. They have had plenty of time and deserve the stick they get.

If they deliver I'm sure fans attitude will change - but it's down to them.

As long a supporter as yourself, but I am sorry but yet again you are being blinded by spin where the blame is deflected against supporters, where in fact (as you should know) it is all down to Venkys.
Unless you know each and every one of these 'thugs' you are generalising and this is what the spin doctors want you to see.
How devoted supporters of BRFC determine how to 'protest' is up to them. BUT, it is Venkys who are the cause. Please keep this in mind when you lambast your fellow supporters. Yes, fellow supporters that have been here with you for a hell of a lot longer than Venkys and Kean.

Only Venkys can change things

If they do not come to Ewood will protests 1000 miles away make any difference to them? or will they just dig their heels in and leave supporters with the same even if that brings inevitable relegation?

Venkys hold the aces - what their intentions are logic defies any sensible supporter knowing. The protests are understandable but get behind the 11 players on the field for the next 2 90 minutes and we may just have a chance.

If Kean would agree to step down if HIS TEAM did not achieve that target people may feel different about the guy - Integrity it is called

Rover Pete says...

Venky's from the first day set about a policy that was a disgrace to football. They sacked Sam and got rid of Williams without the slightest help from anyone and without the slightest reason being given that made sense. They promoted a man to the Managers job that it was obvious from day one was out of his depth. Coupled with all the other rubbish they uttered about world class footballers they would sign has come a endless load of quotes that are obviously not true. They appear to be just made up on the spot to try to shut people up.
Despite all they said about money they have spent less on the club than they got for Phil Jones. There has been no investment whatsoever in the club. Why would Barclays Bank be talking to them over an extended period if they had any money. You silly people are being conned again by people who are better at smoke and mirrors than you are.

Why or how could anybody in thier right mind believe a word these people say. Not one word they have uttered has turned out to be true.
Why would they start to say anything we can trust now?

Let's see if Venky's show a bit more concern when it is their money at risk...and not the club's.
.
Failing that and it is asset strip all the way...just as was planned from the outset.

"...Venky's from the first day set about a policy that was a disgrace to football. They sacked Sam and got rid of Williams without the slightest help from anyone and without the slightest reason being given that made sense. They promoted a man to the Managers job that it was obvious from day one was out of his depth.

Steve, Pete -- VENKY'S are in the grip of ANDERSON. He got rid of Sam and manoeuvred Kean into his place - and he talked Venky's into dismissing John Williams. Football wise, Venky's did not have a clue why those decisions were made. Who else could do it? Certainly not Venky's themselves.
They were made so that Anderson did not have those two obstructions in his way. He dictates who is bought and who is sold.
Why is it that there is no-one with power or authority at Ewood? Because Anderson has told Mr Desai it is not necessary? The regime at Ewood are just office staff with no authority. Anyone can be given a title of director. Anderson is running the club and Venky’s are just the dummy on his knee.
And why was that financial statement made the other day ‘on behalf of Karen Silk’, the finance director? Was she told, or even aware, that it was being made? Surely, it should have been made by Venky’s?
Why did Mrs Desai not come back to Ian Battersby when she was so impressed with his ‘blueprint’ for the club at their meeting in India and asked if he would be prepared to come on board and meet again in 15 days? Was she blocked by Anderson?
Nothing will happen until Venky’s get themselves out of the contract with adviser Anderson, but I guess that won’t happen because that contract will be watertight. And even if they did, what would they do then? They have no idea about running a football club, so would not know where to start.
Kean smugly says he is safe and never felt safer. Because Anderson won’t give authorisation to sack him – Kean is his client!
Do you not think that if Mrs Desai and the ‘management team’ at Ewood had any authority that they would have stuck with Kean as long as this?
They can’t do anything, say anything until they get guidance from Anderson.

As a Clarets fan it is easy to understand the anger and the frustration being showed by the Rovers fans, they are like any other supporter of football clubs in Britain, they want the club they support to do well. They are also a part of the British football tradition which carries an unspoken depth of meaning in their lives.

Yet, at the same time, it is the fans that carry the torch of ambition for their club. Managers and players come and go, even owners, but mostly the fans remain the same, they grow up and grow old in and around the club. When they turn against the people running the club they support, a very meaningful part of that ambition can be destroyed, and what is being witnessed at Rovers is a slide towards implosion.

I don't expect many of the fans to take this to heart, but the Clarets have been there and done that with John Bond.

You're still in the Premier League, and the stats are very close. I believe if the fans rallied around Kean, regardless of what they think of him, if they got behind the players, give them the encouragement they need through genuine vocal support, they will come true for you.

This season is now all about survival. You only need three or four contiguous games won to achieve that. Instead of looking at the opposition and thinking that's another 3 points lost, look at it as one out of three results you can achieve: a loss, a draw, or a win...the latter two being what you should be aiming for.

Yes, the responsibility on achieving the points rests entirely on the manager and the players, but if you attack them whilst they are trying to achieve them, what response can you expect from them?

The ability is there, and as fans you should encourage, do all your protesting at the end of the season, when, come what may.

It's time Keane gave Venky's a clear list of his demands for him to save the club from the drop. If he doesn't get any satisfaction from them the only honorable thing for him to do is to resign. He should have done this a long time ago and a lot of grief for the fans and the club could have been avoided. The longer he resists doing this the more likely the prospect of championship and perhaps administration becomes.
