Seneca prepare Blackburn Rovers bid
10:00am Saturday 12th May 2012 in Blackburn Rovers Relegation
Exclusive By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
CORPORATE finance and capital raising company Seneca Partners are formulating a proposal to buy Blackburn Rovers from under-fire owners Venky’s.
Seneca, operated by lifelong Blackburn Rovers fans and prominent East Lancashire businessmen Ian Battersby and Ian Currie, are working to bring together a ‘credible and well funded proposition’ to offer Venky’s a way out.
Former Accrington Stanley chairman and investment banker Ilyas Khan has approached the wealth management company with a view to working with them to find a resolution to Rovers’ current crisis. Seneca, based at Haydock, provides investment opportunities for high net worth individuals and entrepreneurs and deals with funds of hundreds of millions of pounds.
Battersby and Currie were granted an audience with club owner Anuradha Desai to discuss the club’s future in October.
No bid has yet been formalised or made.
Venky’s remain adamant they are not for sale, despite coming under increasing pressure from frustrated fans after their recent Premier League relegation.
Co-owner Balaji Rao told the Times of India they were ‘here for the long haul’ and promised big changes at the club in the next few weeks.
As well as having access to the funds needed to purchase Rovers, Seneca would look to a put a management structure in place at Ewood Park.
A statement from Seneca, said: “There is nothing more to say at this point, other than we are acutely aware of the difficult state the club currently finds itself in. The economic impact on the town, its surrounding areas and the local population dictates that action needs to be taken in short order to reverse the recent sequence of events.
“Bringing together a credible and well funded proposition is the ambition.
“We are also aware of the excellent effort made by the fans trust and recognise clearly Rovers’ status as a club of the town and its fans.
“We do however wish to stress that nothing has been formalised with any party and certainly not with the current owners.
“The statement intends to reassure Rovers fans that the club’s immediate future and heritage will not be easily relinquished.”
Battersby has extensive experience in wealth management and corporate banking, having held past positions with Lloyds TSB Group and Hill Samuel before becoming director of Wealth Management.
For the past decade he has worked exclusively with a network of high net worth individuals in the sport, music and entertainment sector.
Currie has a wealth of experience in corporate finance and was the co founder of Manchester based financial group The Zeus Group.
Khan stepped down as Stanley chairman last Friday and is in the process of giving away shares in the club. He is a multi-millionaire investment banker with a number of different businesses.

If Venky's were keen on saving money by getting rid of all the old players etc, can anyone explain to me why they gave Steve Kean an improved contract half way through the season? It does'nt make sense to me but not a lot does.

Venkys are really going to play hard ball here for the purpose of retaining their over inflated pride/ego.
Plus they know the bid is coming from people who have a fervent personal desire to acquire the club, so I am afraid this puts the ball fairly firmly in their court.
However Ian etc. know this, so they will play it accordingly.
I would love to think the FA or whoever could keep a close eye on this so THAT unsavoury character cannot be 'involved'.

Kean let his guard down on a number of occasions recently - in fact Anderson will probably begin to think he is a bit of liability.
.
After insisting he would not answer any questions on the "off-the-field" activities, he insisted the club was now debt free. Actually the club should have been "debt-free" when Venky's 'took over the club'. In fact they saddled the club with it's own debt (borrowing huge sums against the club's assets) and then went on to sell the assets to cover their take-over. So in fact Venkys/Kean/Anderson
's acquisition of Blackburn Rovers FC is now debt free (courtesy of Jack Walker's financial legacy). Money coming in now from the parachute payments/player sales (which Kean is quickly promoting)/sale of the club/Academy etc etc is purely multi-million pound profit. Kean/Anderson clearly did not wish for anyone to find out about their little scheme, hence the reason why Kean undertook regular trips to India and why they no longer permit Venkys to talk to English press. It is another reason why Kean is so ****-sure of his status as manager of the club (because in fact he is effectively one of the silent partners) after one of the worst managerial records in footballing history.
.
The Premier League should check whether "silent partners" are permitted under Premier League rules. The LET/Jack Straw should push the Premier League to investigate this element of the takeover (and not Venky's ability as business owners. After all, Anderson made sure they would fit all the criteria of the Premier League's fit and proper test when he first approached them. Flight records of the two men (Kean in particular) should be checked to identify whether he travelled to Pune prior to being made manager 18 months ago. If he did then this would clearly add weight to the theory that they are fully behind a scheme to asset strip the club for their own greedy ends.
.
Is this within Premier League rules?? I doubt it!!

If only we could start shaming the Venky's brand - for cruelty against chickens for example - and get coverage in India that might force them out. If we turned the tables on their primary business then they might get the message of sell Rovers or lose everything.
The reality though is that Venkys won't sell unless they get back more than what they paid for the club and the club is no longer worth what they paid, plus they won't want to lose "face" in India, so unfortunately I can't see this happening although I hope it does.

I should like to know the Premier League's rules on "silent partners" when it comes to takeovers and/or ownership of Premier League football clubs. I should like to know whether Steve Kean and/or Jerome Anderson were listed as "silent partners" of Blackburn Rovers Football Club.
Of course Mr Anderson and Mr Kean could be perfectly innocent. However, surely this warrants a full Premier League - and now football league - inquiry.
I should also like to know whether Richard Scudamore has any personal relationship with Jerome Anderson and whether this could be a reason why he clearly fights off all requests to investigate the club's takeover and ownership.

Thousands of fans will not renew season tickets under the present regime of incompetent w@nkers.
The only time I'll go to a match at ewood is when we play the dingles.
And I will not spend any money at ewood , on food drink programes or merchandise from the club shop while these muppets continue to disrespect the fans and the memory of our beloved uncle jack (R.I.P.) and Blackburn rovers.
137 years in the making, 18 months in the destruction by waste of space owners, a pitiful excuse of a manager who should be put out of his misery (don't think there would be a shortage of volunteers) and the unmentionable one hans Christian
I have been going down to ewood with my two brothers for over forty years, up and down the divisions, through thick and thin, good and bad times , it's hard to say but we will not step inside ewood again except for dingle derby, until the lunatics running the asylum have been brought to justice for raping my (our) club.
Sad times very sad, get to Fu@k out of our club you bunch of ar$e wipes.

If Khan and and the two Ian's can pull this off it should be great for Rovers. When he was rescuing Stanley from the taxman Ilyas made it his business to strongly engage with the fans, posting on message boards and even making his mobile number public so anybody with concerns about his plans could contact put them to him. He has turned the club around over the last three years and leaves them in a very healthy position, is giving away his shareholding and making sure no one person or body has overall control of the club.
What has disappointed me the most this morning is the negative comments coming from Wayne Wild. While we all know Wayne and BRIST only have the clubs best interests at heart, immediately coming out and calling the consortium "vultures" (https://twitter.com
/#!/mrwawild/status/
201233939963187200) screams of pure jealousy and self-interest, however BRIST is supposed to be the opposite of that.
I've pledged to buy a share if BRIST can buy the club, but with only 10% of the targeted pledges having been made, it still isn't anywhere near a credible proposition. Wild has always said he would welcome other investors to join up with BRIST and rather than slating Khan & Co from the start he should think seriously about opening a dialogue with him to offer support - all it together he keeps telling us.
Khan is on the side of the fans, has invested in a lot of companies and charities for their good rather than for his own and I can't see him looking at Rovers any differently. Two big Rovers fans working with him should also tell you something.
In my view, BRIST should be speaking to Khan and discussing how the two can work together. I'm sure if Khan makes a bit and is successful in purchasing the club, he would be supportive of BRIST and offer members/fans the chance to purchase shares similar to how he has invited Stanley fans to buy £100 shares in their club (and maybe give BRIST a seat on the board).
It is completely wrong of Wild to be talking of "vultures" and screams of self-interest. I can understand that he doesn't want to see all his hard work go to waste, but that is absolutely no reason to react the way he has.
Good luck to BRIST, but equally good luck to Khan. However, I fear that if Khan's plan develops further and if Wild continues in the same vain as this morning, BRIST will lose support and alienate a potential new owner that he could be working with.

Finding people to replace the current idiots will be a difficult task, so I wish Seneca Partners well in their quest, should it come to anything.
At the moment, the only people who have profited from our demise are the Agents, the Agency and the Advisor. Venkys will lose money if they sell, but more importantly they will lose face, which in the Indian culture is more important. Since my first match in 1953 I have witnessed poor directors, poor managers and poor teams. Now we have a combination of all three and the pigs are still feeding from the trough.

I get the impression they will be buying the club off Kean/Anderson as well as Venkys.
.

It's more to do with owning part of or a share in a company but not having any active role in it i.e. you can pay your money but just sit back and let others get on with it - a bit like Venkys really, apart from the paying your money bit.
You're looking too deeply into this whole conspiracy thing. Yes the set up may be unusual for a football club but not for other businesses. Scudamore was right insofar as the FA can't guarantee the competence of the people who buy clubs.
That's not to say the FA shouldn't have a look at its "fit and proper" criteria and accept more responsiblity for ensuring clubs are less likely to get jokers like Venkys.
Fact is, venky's have managed the club abysmally. Kean and Hans Christian are not part owners of the club, silent or otherwise. Hans Christian has made too many public denials to risk being found out. Besides, would part ownership of BRFC be worth THAT much to him?
Kean most definitely has far too much influence on the owners but to suggest he is a business partner just doesn't make sense.
If he was so wealthy to be in that position would he allow himself to take all the stick he has had? He would surely opt to be a genuine "silent partner".
Alternatively, if he wanted to increase the value of his supposed investment, the first thing he would do would be to sack himself.
Or maybe he's just a massochist who truly is useless at everything he does.

SmelltheCoffee - I think you might have something there. It would definitely explain Kean's certainty of being manager next season (and of his contract being renewed when there was already unrest among the fans.)

1) he is a die hard Rovers fan who was friendly with the club management back in Jack's day.
2) he is extremely good at his day job and will, if allowed, give us the best Rovers team that can be managed, together with transparent, efficient and effective management of the club.
I have no idea what BRIST's problem is, but I am of the opinion that surely it would make more sense to work with them than moan about them?

Maybe initially (i.e. when the Walkers were selling the club) they weren't in a position to buy / believed (as many of us did) that the Venky's could be good for the team?
Why all the suspicion? If you need proof that someone can run Rovers well before they get the chance, then surely no one can do it and we should just liquidate the club now as no one, (with the exception of Jack W who isn't an option) can provide the sort of assurances you seem to expect.

I think the area was exceptionally fortunate to have Jack Walker as he and Fred Walker shared joint ownership of the company they built.I think its a pity Fred does not like football because he still lives in Osbaldeston and would easily be able to fund a takeover.I think if Jack came back he would dismiss most of the management structure now in situ and bring back J Williams and Rober Coar.

As Blackburn Rovers supporters in Lancashire awoke on Tuesday struggling to cope with the club's relegation from the Premier League, there was little sympathy to be found on the streets of India, the home of the club's owners.
In a country of 1.2 billion cricket fans, some 60 million Indians watched the English Premier League's 2009/10 season, roughly the same as Britain's entire population.
Most of them, however, never really cared for the former Premier League champions and there was hardly any excitement around Indian poultry giant Venky's 23 million pound takeover of Blackburn in November, 2010.
The same aloofness greeted Blackburn's relegation from the Premier League following their 1-0 home defeat to Wigan Athletic on Monday.
I didn't really care about Blackburn. For me they were just another football club. I felt no special affinity towards them. I viewed them as another club my team (Arsenal) had to beat to reach the top four, Swaroop Swaminathan, a student at Newcastle University, in England, told Reuters.
Abhishek Iyer, a third year student at a premier engineering institute in Rajasthan was equally dismissive.
I don't care about them - didn't like them as a team much and (having) Indian owners don't change that. Reasonably satisfied they're gone, he said.
All India Football Federation (AIFF) Vice President Subrata Dutta echoed a similar sentiment.
Venky's has not invested in Indian football... Apart from one exhibition match between Pune FC and the club, Blackburn Rovers has in no way contributed for Indian football. So we are not bothered about their relegation, Dutta told Reuters by phone.
I don't think they have served our purpose or even their purpose. Being a Pune-based company, I would have been happy if they would have invested in Pune FC rather than Blackburn Rovers, he added.

Similar to icannotrace above who in their right mind would invest in a business that will more than likely lose them money?
Jack Walker did but he had the personal wealth required at the time
