ON one of the darkest days in their history Blackburn Rovers were relegated from the Premier League amid scenes of heartbreak and fury.

Their desperate 1-0 defeat in pouring rain at the hands of fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic consigned them to the Championship after 11 years in the top flight.

After the final whistle at Ewood Park chants of ‘Kean out’, ‘Stand up if you hate Venky’s’ and ‘Venky’s out’ rang around the stadium, as they had throughout the match.

Around 30 to 40 supporters ran on to the pitch to express their disgust.

Several hundred Rovers fans stayed behind to vent their anger, and some threw tennis balls with ‘Kean out’ written on them, but the vast majority trooped out in silence, their spirits dampened by the disastrous end to the season.

Outside Ewood around 100 fans braved the weather to mount a protest at the Ronnie Clayton Blackburn End, with fans singing ‘We want our Rovers back’ and ‘Rovers ’til I die’.

Some fans even attempted to get back into the ground to vent their frustrations at the team’s plight.Before the match, as nervous fans were making their way to the stadium, a small aircraft was flown over Ewood with a banner which read: “In Venky’s We Trust – Burnley SU”.

The tense atmosphere began early with chants against both Kean and Venky’s from just the fifth minute. Even a chicken being thrown on to the pitch failed to distract a large section of the support from their protests.

But as the conditions deteriorated and the heavens opened Rovers’ efforts were to no avail.

The club’s relegation is the culmination of a downward spiral since Venky’s took over the club.Their remote style of management has been deeply unpopular with the fans, and decisions to jettison proven manager Sam Allardyce and experienced chairman John Williams have proved to be disastrous.

Fans have made their feelings known all season only to be wrongly vilified by some sections of the national media and football establishment.

Last night’s match had begun with Rovers needing a win to stand any chance of staying up. They would then have had to go to Chelsea on Sunday and record another victory and hope that results elsewhere went their way.

After the game Rovers fans lined up to condemn the management of the club over the past 12 months.

Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway described the team’s relegation as “a disaster” and said: “It is disgusting what has happened, and the culpability lies with the owners.

“I have got no idea what their ultimate aim is, but whatever they are doing they have wrecked the club and done serious, grievous damage to the town.”

The relegation represents a massive blow to the area.

Blackburn MP Jack Straw said: “It is very sad, not just for the club and its supporters but for the whole town.

“It is depressing. It is aggravating and it shouldn’t have happened.

“Over the years a lot of teams who get relegated get back.

“We did it in 1992 and in 2001. In fact I think this is the longest spell we have had in the top flight since the end of the war.”

After the match Kean said he was devastated but he would ‘live to fight another day’.

The club’s owners, who were not to be seen at the match, are now likely to be under even more pressure to let him go.

I had a season ticket the season venky's took over. we were solid at ewood under sam and no one liked playing at ewood. The club was on high, more tickets been sold and we were a good prem side. The contrast since venky's and kean came in has been shocking. didnt renew my st this season and wont until Kean is gone, although really we need Venky's gone, they dont have a clue about football both as a sport and a business. The warning signs where there last season but they didnt learn from them, that makes them idiots.

Really sad day for any rovers fan - but when we needed to get behind the team you decide to shout abuse at the manager - dont you realise the players back him and think so much of him. if Kean stays then we have to get behind him and the team - yes the owners are no good but throwing abuse since christmas has not helped matters infact it probably has had a real negative effect on the team. Blame for relegation = 50% owners, 20% players, 10% manager, 20% negatvity from the protestors. I am not a massive Kean fan but I do think he is the only one who can keep our best players at the club.

The Walker Trust should not have sold up - if only they had the Club's interests at heart like Uncle Jack (Can someone tell me why they sold? was the club in debt/not profitable? - i think i missed it)

Also, the fans are right to show their frustrations through chanting etc. some may go over the top but generally if you have paid money for something you should be able to have your say - football games are very vocal and always have irate language in most chants.

Kean resign, Chicken men sell up quick (buy an IPL cricket team - you know nothing about football). WEC group/and so called business men who said they have put a plan to make Venky's an offer for the Club if relegated - put your money where your mouth is!

In the end like they say 'It's all about the money' Money can't buy heritage/history of this Club.

Robinson - I wish you the best as I expect you to move on - stick it out if we somehow get better owners/manager.

We will be back. Stick through thick and thin BRFC fans, good times will hopefully come again.

If this was happening at Liverpool blackburn_man there would be riots not fairly mild mannered protests ! Lots of Liverpool fans gave Roy Hodgson stick despite him having a better league record than Dalglish !

I'm getting really fed up with everyone talking about how BRFC fans should get behind the team and stop their chanting at games. They have tried to talk to the owners. The local businesses / sponsors have tried to talk to the owners. It didn't work. Can't you understand that they have tried doing it by the book and it didn't get them anywhere? We have seen this coming since big Sam left (and no, I never wanted him to go, I thought he was doing a decent job, even if he didn't set the world on fire). To all those fans from other teams, put yourselves in our shoes: if there was only one way to make your feelings known, wouldn't you take it?
As for the Walker family; lay off them. They aren't football fans; that was Jack. Are you really saying that everyone who wishes to sell a business should check that the guy with the cash has enough knowledge of the business in question to buy it? Surely, in this case I thought that sort of due diligence should be in the remit of the Premier League or the FA......
All I can hope is that now Venky's no longer own a Premiership team they might wise up and either sell or put in a team who know what they are doing...... Mean will have to fired; he isn't going to walk on his own; he has just written his own reference and even he should be able to see that it's awful.... On second thoughts, maybe he can't. After all he has spent the last season missing the blindingly obvious.....

Yes, the vitriol is unprecedented, but that is purely because the whole situation is unprecedented. No, the fans of those clubs weren't happy, the difference is that they saw changes being made: managers were replaced, teams were altered, different tactics were tried etc.... At Blackburn we have a manager who seems to be watching a different game most of the time if the post match comments I see are anything to go by.... Foreign ownership is not necessarily a problem: Liverpool's owners actually pay attention to what their team is doing and have been making noises that they are not happy with current progress. Abramovich changes Chelsea's manager frequently in the pursuit of results. Our owners? I have no idea what they think of the team or how they expect to move forwards as they stay in Pakistan and just let the rot continue.

This is not a race issue and any attempt to make it such is simply purile. Venkys came in and instantly showed they had no idea about football as a game or football as a business. They threatened to change the name of the stadium, showing a complete lack of knowledge of Blackburn Rovers and its heritage and traditions. They banded ridiculous names around of players they were going to bring in to Rovers. They offered £5million a year for transfers where if I remember rightly, Rovers were getting £10million a year under the Walker foundation. When it did come to transfers the money had to be virtually crowbarred out of their grasping mits. They sacked a proven and stable manager and brought in Steve Kean my puppet. They have attended less than half a dozen games. As for the Asian population of Blackburn, I think you will find that 90-95% of them are of Pakistani origin and Venkys are Indian. It is well documented that Pakistani and Indian people don't get along. Not only this the majority of Asians in towns such as Blackburn tend to be Manchester United fans. This has nothing to do with race and it is pathetic that someone would try and make it such.

Yes, the vitriol is unprecedented, but that is purely because the whole situation is unprecedented. They have attended less than half a dozen games. As for the Asian population of Blackburn, I think you will find that 90-95% of them are of Pakistani origin and Venkys are Indian. It is well documented that Pakistani and Indian people don't get along. Not only this the majority of Asians in towns such as Blackburn tend to be Manchester United fans. This has nothing to do with race and it is pathetic that someone would try and make it such.

Okay, lets turn your logic around. Maybe the Asian fans would rather back their brethren than stand with the infadel against Venkys. Or maybe they just can't be a**ed because they are not so deeply interwoven in the whole support of the club. I still maintain that to make this an issue of race is absolutely pathetic and typical of a left wing liberal to try and play the massively overplayed racism card where it has no place.
Maybe there's a logical reason why the local asian BRFC fan isn't behind the protest. Maybe you're right and maybe they would rather opt out given the fact that the tone of the protest is anti Venky - who just so happens to be asian. I think if I were an Indian from Blackburn I would be deeply suspicious of the underlying sentiment.

Is there a racial element to this protest? Every criticism of the owners and the manager made by the protestors could be made of most owners/managers of other clubs, but this case is clearly different. I live in New Zealand and miss the Clarets immensely.

Supporting a football team is all about that... "Support". Bad manager, bad owners, voice your opinion, that's fine. But always get behind your team on game day. Anything other is inexcusable.

I did have a wee titter when the Rovers went down though ;)
