DARWEN met one of the league’s newcomers and came away with three points against the side in fifth place in the Vodkat First Division.
The game started badly for the visitors when a poor backpass meant that Stefan Holden had to rush out from goal to head the ball away, but his clearance fell to Wigan’s Whittle, who lobbed the ball over the keeper into an empty net.
After some early pressure by Wigan, Darwen started to gain momentum, and the first half proceeded with very few opportunities for either side.
Darwen got back into the game after 37 minutes in spectacular fashion.
Lee Turner picked up a pass from Dennis Hill just on the halfway line and from over 30 yards fired into the roof of the Wigan net, with goalkeeper Foulds frozen on the line.
The Salmoners had an opportunity to increase their lead four minutes later.
Liam McMillan beat the last defender but scuffed his kick, which Foulds gratefully gathered.
Darwen continued to press in the second half and took the lead, with man of the match Tony Roscoe beating the defence to rifle a powerful effort past Foulds.
Wigan’s Cushion hit a shot on the turn but straight into Holden’s arms.
Lee Turner then beat the Wigan offside trap to hit a low strike, which Foulds pushed away well at full stretch.
Lee Turner’s brother, Karl, also broke clear but fired straight at Foulds.
Lee Turner was again on target 10 minutes before time, bringing out another good save from the Wigan keeper, who then had to be alert to block a Ben Walker effort.
The home side increased pressure on the Darwen defence during six minutes of extra time but could not break through to level the match at 2-2.
