KAYDEN Jackson believes Accrington Stanley are back in business after a thumping 4-0 home win over struggling Chesterfield lifted them into fourth spot in League Two.

The Reds had dropped as low in 10th towards the end of 2017 but a 3-0 away success at Grimsby on December 30 was bettered by Saturday’s result and Stanley could even be in the automatic promotion places had their game with Morecambe on New Year’s Day not being abandoned with the Reds a goal to the good.

And, with the Reds just a point shy of the top three, Jackson is hoping the recent resurgence can continue.

He said: “We did go on a bad run in December but hopefully we have put that behind us – we had a few losses in a row so hopefully now we can get a few wins on the bounce.

“Hopefully this shows Accrington are back. When we had bad spell a lot of teams might have thought Accrington had blown up but hopefully we are back on track.”

First half goals from Mark Hughes and Sean McConville put John Coleman’s side in the driving seat before Jackson found the net shortly after the break, although he had a helping hand from Chesterfield goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale who allowed the frontman’s shot to squirm through his grasp at the near post.

Billy Kee completed the scoring in the final minute and Jackson insisted that the third goal belongs to him, not the unfortunate Spireites keeper.

“It was a good performance, it was a similar feeling to the start of the season where we were winning games and enjoying good wins like that as well,” Jackson told Stanley’s official website.

“I was pleased to score so I was a bit surprised when my dad told me at the end that it was given as an own goal.

“I am going to get that changed, the referee has said it was my goal, it was clearly going in so hopefully it will be changed.”

Should the goal be awarded to the former Barnsley striker then it will take his tally for the campaign to nine, and he is pleased with his return so far this term.

He added: “If someone had said eight or nine goals before the new year, I probably would have taken that as my game is not just about scoring goals.

“It’s also about helping the team, chipping in with assists and working hard so I do a lot more for the team than soley concentrating on goals.

“Goals make you feel good but as long as the team win, I am happy to score or provide an assist.”

The game saw Jimmy Dunne make his Stanley debut off the bench after Janoi Donacien was taken off injured.

Dunne joined on loan from Burnley last week and the defender coped well with his first taste of League Two football, while Coleman confirmed that Donacien’s substitution was a precaution and he hopes the 24-year-old will be fit for the weekend trip to Cheltenham Town.

And the Reds boss also expects to bring in further signings before the end of the transfer window.

“There will be three or more added before the end of January but we are not going to panic, if we are going to sign players they will be the right ones.”

Of Donacien, the Reds boss added: “It was more of a precaution, he got a knock on the ankle and just felt it a little bit, hopefully it will settle down by next week.”
