ACCRINGTON Stanley bid for a place in the third round of the FA Youth Cup tonight when they welcome Coventry City to the Wham Stadium with Academy boss Paul Lodge hoping a change in system can help them through.

The Reds produced a spirited display to knock out neighbours Rochdale last week with captain Joshua Hmami's strike securing a 1-0 win.

Their reward is a tie with the Sky Blues and Lodge is keen to see his side reach the last 64 and a potential tie with the big boys.

Lodge said: "We will show Coventry the respect they deserve but no more, we will be going for it.

"We are looking forward to it, they are a Category Two club and will be a good side but we are in confident mood.

"We want to reach round three, we got there last year and lost to Shrewsbury and with all due respect to them it wasn't a great draw.

"We took Crystal Palace to extra time in the 2015-16 season and that was a great night for us.

"Hopefully we can get through the tie and get a good draw in the next round."

The victory over Rochdale was a pleasing one for Lodge who saw a resolute display from his Reds side as they saw out the victory thanks to Hmami's sixth minute goal.

"We have changed the system a couple of weeks ago and have gone to three at the back," the youth team boss added. "We thought we were conceding a few too many goals so it was pleasing to get a clean sheet against Rochdale.

"It helps the lads development as well as they have to get used to different formations and different systems.

"It is part of the programme and learning for the lads."

While a place in round three is a clear target for Lodge's youngsters he admits it is player progress rather than cup cheer that is the ultimate aim of the Under-18 set-up at the Wham Stadium.

"We are all competitive and it is built into us that we want to win," he added.

"It's all about development and getting them as ready as we can for the first team.

"We want to get players through that John and Jimmy can call upon and use.

"Results, points and league tables are great but we want to see players coming through into the first team, the first team is everything."

Kick off at the Wham Stadium tonight is 7pm with tickets £5 for adults and £2 for under-16s.

The tie will be settled on the night with extra time and penalties if necessary.
