STANLEY boss John Coleman knows full well the impact an FA Cup upset can have and is determined to avoid a banana skin at Guiseley in round one tomorrow.

The Reds are favourites to progress at their National League opponents and Coleman is determined to get through. He has overseen plenty of upsets in the FA Cup and League Cup over the years at Accrington both in their non-league days in the past few seasons, but the cup has also thrown up some lows for Coleman as a player and a manager.

Asked to name his FA Cup low point the Reds boss said: “As a player it was losing to Maine Road when I was at Morecambe, we lost 2-1.

“I had equalised on the stroke of half time and I remember having a go at the rest of the players because I thought we were coasting in the game and taking it too easy but I warned that if they scored again we would find it difficult and they did and we lost 2-1.

“I remember it as if it was yesterday. It took me a good month to get over.”

As a manager Coleman lists a replay defeat to Worcester City in 2005 as another FA Cup low and he is determined to avoid a shock this weekend.

“We had a good run last year and it would be great to repeat it again this year,” said the Reds chief whose side beat Bradford City on their way to round four last term.

“You always looked at the next round if you went out at the other teams who were on a run and in the spotlight and you wanted to be a part of that.

“I think as one of the League Two teams that it means more financially to us than others, it can make a difference to our season. It could be the difference between bringing in a player in January or not.”

The Reds will come up against a host of former players at Nethermoor Park with four former Reds on the books at Guiseley.

Rob Atkinson, Lee Molyneux, Will Hatfield and Kayode Odejayi could all feature for the Lions and will be hoping to get one over their old employer and old manager.

But Coleman is not focussing too much on bragging rights.

“It might have a bearing for them,” he added. “I know Molly (Lee Molyneux) quite well and he is a great lad and a good footballer. He has always fared quite well when he has played against me so hopefully he doesn’t do that on Sunday.”
