STANLEY boss John Coleman was ‘angry’ with the result after seeing his side lose 1-0 to Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night.

The first pre-season action for both teams saw the Terriers pinch a win courtesy of Tom Ince’s second-half strike.

But Coleman insisted the Reds deserved at least a draw and claimed they missed a handful of decent chances to even win the Wham Stadium clash.

“You know me, I’m disappointed that we got beat,” he said after the entertaining encounter with David Wagner’s team.

“I don’t want to get beat and I don’t want the players to get used to getting beat and feel it’s acceptable. The minute you start doing that you’ll go backwards.

“We should never have lost that game. We had the chances to win it and we missed three or four glorious ones.

“They had a couple as well, and it’s a soft goal (to concede). He (Aaron Chapman) saved it and then trying to retrieve it he’s punched it in.

“It was unfortunate but we had enough chances to certainly get something out of the game.

"I thought there were good performances and it bodes well.

“Last season we got absolutely torn apart by them at their training ground, so we’ve definitely improved since then.

“Obviously I’m disappointed with the result, in fact I’m angry with the result, but I can’t fault the players for the effort they put in.”

There were plenty of familiar faces in the Stanley line-up, with new signings Jonny Edwards, Liam Nolan, Mekhi McLeod and Erico Sousa also getting a taste of the action in the second half.

Coleman fielded three trialists from the start, and he picked out a number of performances that pleased him.

He said: “It’s difficult trying to get everyone a game and there were some lads who didn’t get on.

“You want to give people opportunities and I think there were a couple of really good performances.

“I thought Billy Kee and Jonny Edwards were very good, for different reasons.

“And I thought the lad we had on trial (up front) did really well. I was pleased with a couple of trialists.”

The Reds boss was also impressed with the physical condition of his players, who have been back in training for a fortnight.

“One thing we did look tonight was really fit,” he said. “That’s been down to the hard work the players have done on the training ground.

“We will still work hard over the coming weeks and we want to get ourselves in peak condition for the first game of the season.”
