ACCRINGTON Stanley’s Matty Pearson is hoping an FA Cup run can inspire an upturn in league form as the Reds head to Woking for a second round clash this weekend.

Pearson and his Stanley teammates make the trip on the back of a 1-1 home draw with Yeovil Town in League Two which was secured thanks to Rommy Boco’s last-gasp leveller.

The Benin man’s strike ended a near six-hour Stanley goal drought but John Coleman’s side are still without a league win since October 15.

But the Reds have beaten League One side Bradford in the FA Cup since then and are now targeting a place in round three, and a potential date with the big boys, at National League side Woking on Sunday (2pm).

The Cards are a side that Pearson, who wants to add more goals to his game, knows well from his non-league days at Halifax and the 23-year-old is looking forward to the cup clash.

He said: “I have played there before and I think their pitch will suit us,” said Pearson. “It’s a massive game for us and we need to win and hopefully take that momentum into our league games.

“I have got two goals this season and need to chip in with more and we just need to score more – I am sure we will and we can push up the table.”

Despite the recent league wobble, which has seen Stanley slip from the play-off places to 20th in the table, Pearson is confident the Reds will turn their season around.

“It’s not nice is it?” said the defender. “I have never been on a run like this in my life, I have never experienced anything like losing four games on the bounce, and I don’t like it. We are really struggling for goals and it’s something which hasn’t happened in my time here before.

“We haven’t lost games by big margins – it’s been 1-0 or a lot of draws – and if we had just taken a couple of our chances we would be a lot better off in terms of points.

“But we know the table is tight and a run of wins could get us back into the play-off spots. We just need to score.”

Pearson, who missed the defeat to Hartlepool last week through suspension, admitted he was glad to be back against the Glovers having seen an impressive run of starts come to an end in the north east.

He added: “I think it was 63 successive league games so it was hard to sit out Hartlepool but it was good to be back against Yeovil.

“It did look bleak so it was vital Rommy (Boco) equalised – we really needed it. I don’t like looking at the table at the moment but we are confident we can climb back up it.”
