After a very quiet start the home side took an 18th minute lead when a high ball into the Stanley box was latched onto by Wolves midfielder Christian Herc who from a tight angle on the right fired off the post past Aaron Chapman to make it 1-0.

The Reds attempted to respond, with Jordan Clark cutting in from the left and testing keeper Harry Burgoyne before Ross Sykes saw a goal ruled out for offside, the teenager converting Matty Pearson’s header from close range only for the flag to go up.

The home team doubled their lead when a deep corner to the far post fell to wideman Donovan Wilson who drilled the ball into the bottom left corner.

And the team coached by Scott Sellars extended their lead on the stroke of half time when striker Morgan Gibbs-White made his way into the box and went down under a challenge by Sykes. Ref David Webb pointed to the spot and Wolves skipper Conor Ronan converted to make it 3-0 at the interval.

Chapman was called upon to turn an effort from Wilson round the post before the contest went flat once more in a staccato sequence of stoppages and subs.

Once such change saw John Coleman bring on youth team player Reagan Ogle at right back to make it a night to remember for at least one person in the ground.

Enobakhare completed the scoring with a shot between defender and goalkeeper.

Burgoyne was tested again before the end, turning a Clark strike over his bar, but there was never any danger of a comeback as the Reds exited the revamped and much maligned competition.
