PIERO Mingoia says he rejected interest from elsewhere to sign a new one-year contract with Accrington Stanley.

Mingoia emerged as one of the stars of the Stanley side last season, topping the scoring charts with eight goals, and Reds boss John Coleman opened talks with the winger two months ago about a new deal.

The 23-year-old’s contract was due to expire this summer but he has now committed his future to Stanley, despite interest from other clubs.

Mingoia said: “There were a few things popping up but everyone really wants me here and that’s really important to me, so I was happy to sign.

“We have been talking about it for a while and now the deal is finalised and I can look forward to next season.

“I really enjoyed last season. t was a rollercoaster as I was in and out of the team with the change of managers but once I got my chance, I thankfully took it.

“I want to go out again this season and try to improve on that.

“It’s first time I have finished top scorer at a professional club, so it was a good honour to do that.”

The likes of Luke Joyce, Nicky Hunt and Rob Atkinson have all decided to depart this summer, so Mingoia is ready to take on more responsibility in the dressing room if required.

He said: “A few of the older players have left so there will be a few changes, but I am ready to step up into a more senior role if that helps the team.

“I think the gaffer and his staff are optimistic about the squad and what we can do at this level.

“I am too as I want to be competing at the highest level I can.”
