ACCRINGTON Stanley blew a great chance to give themselves breathing space above the League Two relegation places when they were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Southend this afternoon.

After a goalless first period which was dominated by the Reds, Stanley led through James Gray's smart strike.

It looked as though the Reds would be able to hold on or even add to their tally, especially after Southend's Ryan Cresswell was sent off for grabbing Gray around the neck as the pair tussled in the technical area.

But with time running out Kevan Hurst's long-range drive beat Paul Rachubka to earn the Shrimpers a point.

I am beginning to fear for Stanley, We don't seem to have the killer instinct. We certainly don't take the chances we make which is the biggest worry. We need to start winning very quickly as time is definitely not on our side.

Going down me thinks. Spent too long in league two. No money to improve ground. Team full of other teams cast offs. Low crowds due to " this is best we are going to get " feeling. Accrington is a dead end town, nuff said.

I have every confidence that we will stay up this season & even if our finishing position is just one place above the relegated teams that will be fine by me as after all the upheaval of the last 12 months, Leam is steadily turning the ship around - anyone who saw the game on Saturday would have seen a massive improvement from our last home game & that is down to Leam bringing in the experienced players our team needed after Cook left us with all his young inexperienced signings that he was going to 'mould into his own team' - maybe he intended to do just that until Chesterfield came flashing the cash - a temptation he couldn't resist.
The team are now more than capable of staying up - my worry is more about attracting more support, bums on seats is what we need but unfortunately too many do not seem interested in supporting their home town team

The reason behind the low crowds is simply that people know that league two is the best it will ever get for Stanley so why turn up to see a team that will not go up but might very well go down! The stadium is evolution stick standard at best.

Sorry Intothevalley, the ground is fully league standard, however, the facilities need updating somewhat. The problem with the numbers that support Stanley is due to the fact that when they went bust in '63, many people decided to support Rovers or Burnley or worse still Man Utd. Those supporters will not come back and the club must work with the local community to encourage kids to come to the club on Saturdays or weekday nights and bring a parent (or two). I am sure the clubs staff are now working on solutions like this. And to take you to task, why when the club were non-league pre 2006 did they get crowds week in - week out of over 2,000?

People said that we would never get out of non league, but surprise, surprise we did it - and we're still there despite being the bookies favourites to be relegated every single season! There are plenty of reasons to come & watch Stanley if you like proper, honest to goodness football without all the pampered prima donnas that 'grace' the higher leagues
