Appleton is early favourite for Burnley job

MICHAEL Appleton has emerged as favourite for the vacant manager's job at Burnley.

Odds have dropped on the Portsmouth boss from 6/1 earlier in the day to 11/4.

Appleton is believed to be on the Burnley board's shortlist for Eddie Howe's successor, along with Barnsley boss Keith Hill and former Clarets midfielder Micky Mellon, who last season led Fleetwood Town into the Football League for the first time in the club's history.

Salford-born Appleton, who has also been linked with the vacant manager's position at nearby Bolton Wanderers, played down the rumours following Pompey's 2-0 win over Crewe.

“I have not spoken to anyone from Bolton and I haven’t talked to Burnley, either,” he said.

“It is nice to be linked because it means you are doing something right.”

Typical Burnley, linked with another big name manager i see! If we're going down that road then why not try to get Gary Neville out the england set up and bring him in? Its not as though anyone can question 'what's he ever won'. He may lack managerial experience, but not experience of great managment, and our last two have hardly taken us forward. I'm certainly no man u fan but have always thought that if he could successfully covert all his attributes into managment, he could certainly take Burnley forward.

Burnley, bstrds and bolton.
Three proud north west clubs, founder members and each one in sht state. wtf is going on! All three of us are fckd if this continues at all our clubs. I know you two have come down a fair way but we shouldn't be struggling like we are either. On the evidence so far, all three clubs are run by muppets.

If judas coyle makes a return, Burnley will prove to us all that the club isn't serious about progressing and will alienate many fans.

Be interesting to see where the Eddie Howe compensation goes. Any manager coming in will be unattached with no compensation to pay. Steve Kean anyone?

Bring on the HILLCROFT! I've been watching Keith's matches since he became manager at Rochdale! And then gone into Barnsley! Even though I am a Burnley fan! I'm good friends with his wife and we both went to wembley when Rochdale got there unfortunately lost but went up the following season! It's been fantastic watching what he has done with what he hasn't had! He would be a fabulous appointment so enthusiastic and committed both him and flicker. Plus the fact that I might get the odd complimentary ticket. Ha ha!
Vote the HILLCROFT!

If the last two managerial appointments are anything to go by, you can guarantee cost will trump suitability for the post . Parsimony rules these directors who were "surprised at Howe's exit." Where have they been for the last 20 months? Venus?

If you're going for firsts!
But tbh both clubs need to get this one right as there are - as we well know - other nw bigger clubs that could capture the next generation of local support.

It's a bit early for you to bite at one of my comments isn't it?

You usually wait until half three in the morning like on the 'have your say on the next Bonleh manager' story from Friday. Not like that means you're obsessed with me or a sad, angry onanist with an empty life.

Honest (snigger).

You're on the borderline between CHICOMANIAC & stalker.

Hope it all works out for you my bitey little pal!

Bless x

Appleton, Hill and Mellons all managers who have not done anything in the Championship. Typical Burnley going once again for the cheep option instead of going for the likes of Billy Davies or Mick McCarthy who would tell it to the players as it is and also stick up to the board who from the comments in Brian Laws book; " Don't want the fans on their backs." Good job they were not around in Bob Lord's day isn't it?

Really? Your being so original there suggesting Kean for the Burnley job. Nobody has put that one on here yet. You must be the brains of the operation down at Trampwood park.

Why the hell would we want steve kean, he failed at Rovers. No!
I hear Brian Flynn mentioned, has been managing .
what about Lee Dixon. if we are on that
Coyle should have to agree to many many conditions and I hear Davis is hated so............ it would appear Mellon Mc Carthy and Paul Lambert are best bets

ImaBournemouthfan.

m amazed that Eddies back.

Appleton is doing a great job at PFC.Hes maned to get a team of inexperienced youngsters & non contract players to gel & play some decent football against all the odds.

Although Mc Carthy is a Yorks T&&T, hes aproven manager, so I think hed be a good choice, as long as you can put up wih that awful Yorks accent!

Whoever you get, good luck.Have always had a softspot for Burnley ever since I was taken to Turf Moor as a kid.Love to see you back in the Prem!

Thanks for the kind words stevo. We too are amazed that eddie's back at bournemouth. Im sure he'll pick up where he left off. I hope so, as i don't want to think he's dropped us in it for fck all. I can't really comment on mccarthys accent since we are east lancashire almost touching west yorkshire, though it does differ the more east one travels into yorkshire.
Good luck and all the best.
