ERIC Black admits Blackburn Rovers are asking ‘ridiculous’ things of £8million man Jordan Rhodes, and fears the striker is being run to a standstill.

Rovers’ caretaker boss blamed the lack of creativity in Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Wolves on a lack of presence up front, but feels he has been left with little option to use Rhodes in the way he has.

Rovers’ joint record signing has been utilised as a lone striker for much of his short time at the club, due to injuries to Leon Best and Colin Kazim-Richards, with the latter still needing to find full fitness after returning on Saturday.

Black said: “With the options that I had I would defy anyone to tell me who I should have played up front today that would have given us a presence in this division.

“There is not a presence to keep the ball up.

“Kaz was the presence we thought might help.

“Unfortunately for Kaz he worked him-self to a standstill, but he has been out for a couple of months and that was asking an enormous am-ount of him to come and per-form at a top level Kazim-Richards.

“Rhodes, the poor kid has run himself to a standstill.

“He deserves a lot of credit for doing that and putting up with it but what we are asking him to do is ridiculous in my opinion.

“It won’t help the boy and it certainly won’t help us.

“If we had Kaz fully fit then we don’t put the pressure on Jordan Rhodes that we have done, because we have had no presence and have had to play one up and one off.

“In this division, I am not convinced it is the way to go.

“We are asking Jordan to be a Didier Drogba or a Leon Best. He has never done that in his life, why is he all of a sudden going to be running the channels and linking and setting the game?

“That is not what he does, but we have asked him to do that.

“He has done it willingly but I just think the poor kid looks absolutely shattered.

“Playing one up on his own is the last thing he needs. He doesn’t need that and we won’t get the best out of him doing that.

“But we don’t have anybody else who does that job in the club.”

Black has received criticism from some quarters for changing to a 3-5-2 formation but, despite being winless in the last two games, Black insists he does not regret it.

“I am quite happy with how we have changed it,” he said. “I take full responsibility for that.

“We were conceding a lot of goals and were very open and I still didn’t feel our performances were correct.

“I’m a great believer unless there is a strong foundation on the performances then you run out of luck.”

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it black who picked 3 defenders , 5 defensive midfielders and had Rhodes playing with his back to goal all sat afternoon ? This mans as bad as the bald one

Sounds like he may have read some of our comments. However, there's no mention of midfield and it sounds like he hasn't got a clue how to improve the tactics or the team selection. IF Murphy played like he used to, he'd create things, but he hasn't shown it at all so should be dropped. Pedersen would at least pick out some good forward passes now and then and so would Dunn, but as we know they both are pensioners. Seems most of you who have been watching Rovers say Rochina and Ribero would be better than Murphy and Orr. There's also all those Portuguese.

From what I saw on Saturday, Olssen was a threat and needed more service. However, there seems to be no confidence now in going forward and only a new manager will instill that I think. Difficult times but there are top managers applying apparently so please take the opportunity Venkys and appoint the best you can, no matter how much it costs. It will be cheaper in the long run.

Rochina is being under used IMHO. He is the link / creativity we need between midfield and our striker. Play him just off Rhodes and he can thread him the little passes Rhodes was use to at Hudds. I would like a look at Rosado, whats happened with him?

I thought Rhodes was let down by his first touch.Why dont they loan Heskey or someone till Best is back in February?I dont think the front man is the problem though I think Black should try to find two wingers from somewhere as Rhodes thrives on crosses and only Olsson provided 2 decent crosses.

ARE YOU SAYING , nothing that has been going on at Rovers since THE DAY you arrived is nothing to do with YOU ?

Were you and Hendry employed as Keans coaches and right hand men ? Did you or did you not say that Kean deserved a medal for having to put up with the Rovers supporters ?
Are we going to do what STALIN did rewrite history, History ,did Hendry not say or am I imagining this , Hendry AND I quote, "the majority of Rovers supporters are backing and supporting Kean it`s a small minority that are against him" of course little did we know Hendry was wangling himself a highly paid job as Keans driver.

So anyway everything that happened in the past was not Black/Hendry fault , nor anything to do with them, if that is the case can you please pay all your wages back to the club that you have both received since you have been at Rovers.

I just realised. The next game isn't for nearly 3 weeks and the new manager should be in by then, so what is Black talking about? It really has nothing more to do with him. He should not be allowed anywhere near the players. I hope this is not a sign that he is already the No 1 choice and all the rest of it is just a PR stunt. That would be disastrous!

As for the 2 up front, it doesn't matter who they are, if they get no service they will be ineffectual. Roberts, Rooney, Shearer, Peter Crouch or any other would not do well at all with no service. Black is completely blind to that fact, just as Kean was.

"Burnt out", I thought burnt out meant that you have been doing too much. Rhodes is far more isolated upfront than Kalanic ever was under Allardyce. The correct term in Rhodes case is, "in danger of losing his confidence due to a lack of goal-scoring opportunities".

We need a system that unlocks our goalscoring threat, and at the same time cuts out the mistakes and lack of concentration in defence. For me the answer is sort out the midfield, Murphy is a passenger and needs to be dropped, and we need someone with a bit of pace to stretch the opposition, and give them something to think about. In the last two home games both Wolves and Boro knew right from the start that we couldn't really hurt them. This just gives the opposition confidence and encourages them to attack you.

Black you've been listening to K ean for far too long you are beginning to sound like him.What you have got is the result of bringing in players and then trying to play a system,they should have been bought with the system in mind.I know you are not responsible for bringing players in (WHO IS) but you have got to utilise what you've got it's called being a manager.
A poster the other day printed out the tem that beat Burnley 5-0 last time we were in the championship,that squad would have murdered the present squad,so let's hope we can get a manager who can get the best out of what we've got or we are in trouble.
It's Ole Gunnar for me,if not I'd give Shearer a chance,He must have picked something up from Kenny and Ray .

This is the best squad I have had the odious ones final view on this current squad.

If it's one thing we have not had from management for two and a half years is a big dose of REALISM

Let's not let blind loyalty to the cause deflect us from the FACTS.

We have a desperately poor slow ponderous back 5 (including Robo now who is mis judging flight of crosses) even slower midfield if
Murphy Pederson Etuhu are playing
that's 8 out of 11 players.

No wonder they are all so keen to play deep for fear of being shown up by the ball played in behind.

Task of the new manager therefore is huge. To honestly get more out of some of these current players I think is nigh on impossible.

Age no longer on their side
Skills reactions are slowed up

Is it a figure head with a brilliant back room team with great tactical and nurturing skills (sherwoods role at Spurs)
Is there a manager that encompases all what is needed in one person.

What a stupid statement to come out with and admit that your messing about with an 8 million striker asking him to do rediculous things and ruining his normal game. Are you trying to ruin him before you leave. I think you should pay compensation if ruin his game. Just give him the service that he needs and he will score. You have been keeping all the players that could help him on the bench. You have shown beyond doubt that you will not make a good manager and it looks like you are worse than the fella who has just left. Please don't apply the job you should know yourself that you are not up to it.

The guy is clueless - even Kean showed that our strikers could score for fun in this division - the trick is to find the right balance - proper defensive setup which still gives you a system that allows to create chances for your strikers.

Under EB his system is so negative and sterile that JR, NG or C K-R have never had a chance between them but unlike EVERY Rovers fan who has watched any of the last couple of games he is too blind and too arrogant to see the problem - just like his mentor and mate, the previous moronic incumbent of our managerial hotseat.

Surely SS, the Venky brothers and that stupid cow in her ivory tower back in downtown Pune can see through this guys waffle - they've had 18 months practice with hearing Kean speaking tripe on a daily basis so they should be used to it by now !!

Yes, I think everybody is saying the same more or less. We need a manager who can motivate, have good staff to work on fitness, coaching etc, and a figure head to attract players. It is a difficult time ahead for whoever comes in so a good track record is also very important in my opinion. Benitez, OGS (but apparently hes said no), Schuster, Curbishley, Shearer (but only if he has good coaches). Hey! That's not a bad lot to choose from!

Benitez...unproven in this situation, Schuster (unproven in English football), Curbishley...out of work for too long and god knows why people keep mentioning his name, Shearer....no nonsense...would lift morale of the club and put bums on seats...work well with Rhodes, or Mick McCarthy...no nonsense..(proven to get clubs promoted).

Why has black even opened up a debate about Rhodes. Absolutely no one blames the strikers for Saturdays performance. All black has done here is put pressure on Rhodes. He has also made a similar comment about kazim Richards. Kazim Richards worked his socks off on Saturday.MR BLACK, IT WAS THE MIDFIELD!!!!!

Burnt out no wonder running around on your own up front for ninety minutes with no service and a midfield incapable of supporting him,they pay eight million for him and then ask him to play a role totally alien to his style of play it beggars belief,top coach and tactician don't make me laugh.we sold Kalinic who used to play this thankless task and he used to have a half decent team to support him and he still found it difficult.This management team is bloody useless I don't think they could set up a formation to save their lives,god knows where we are going

Everyone who went against Wolves saw that Murphy was having a stinker.

Most of us think Dunn is a little too old/slow for a 90 mins but he can still play the odd decent ball. So with 15 mins to go why didnt Black sub Murphy with Dunn?

We only used two subs in the whole game so in mho it was worth a punt.

Ok, I'm only a pensioner and what do I know about being a football manager? But I think I know about life to say Black and Hendry are not suitable people for the jobs they hold.

I know it's not our best team on paper but I seriously think that there are players who seem to think there's no competition for their place. Also, as well as reverting to a 451 it can also change to 442 without the need for substitutions. I'd keep Kazim-Richards on the right and play Rochina just off Rhodes' shoulder.

Here's praying we make a solid permanent appointment soon! Black's comments are ludicrous. Blatantly obvious that if you haven't got the players to play a system the system needs to change short term to suit the attributes of the players at your disposal. Not ideal but surely preferable to going with an option that is destined to fail, moaning about it and knocking the confidence of the team in the process! Why do we have to put up with this ineptitude!
