FULL TIME: Charlton Athletic 1 Blackburn Rovers 1
4:54pm Saturday 29th September 2012 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
DICKSON Etuhu had given Blackburn Rovers the perfect start to life without Steve Kean but the East Lancashire outfit had to settle for a point at The Valley.
The Rovers midfielder fired the visitors into a 16th minute lead but Charlton levelled on 27 through Johnnie Jackson.
Eric Black was taking charge of first team affairs after Steve Kean quit as Rovers boss last night.
Charlton started the brighter of the two sides but it was Rovers who took the lead, after a flowing passing move on 16.
Jordan Rhodes passed the ball to Nuno Gomes who slipped it to the marauding Etuhu. The midfielder took one touch in the penalty area before firing the ball in at the near post.
Leon Cort then headed over for the hosts, with Salim Kerkar having earlier fired a low shot just inches past the post.
Charlton were level though on 26, after Rovers thought they had escaped through Paul Robinson's penalty save.
Jackson had his spot kick, after Leon Cort was controversially adjudged to have been pushed in the area, saved by Robinson's legs with the ball scrambled half clear.
But the Rovers stopper was left flailing at the subsequent cross from Lawrie Wilson and Danny Green's strike was turned in by Jackson's head from close range.
Green was then inches away from giving the hosts the lead, firing against the post from 18 yards and twisting his way through Rovers' defence.
Bradley Orr came to the visitors' rescue on 40, blocking Jackson's strike at the far post.
Charlton were almost ahead soon after the break as Robinson did well to claw Cort's header off the line, after Kerkar's corner had caused chaos.
The hosts again went close on the hour mark as Kerkar's free kick is headed goalwards by Michael Morrison only for Wright-Phillips to deflect it over.
Nuno Gomes then volleyed over the bar for Rovers and Rhodes headed wide from Jason Lowe's cross late on.
Robinson ensured Rovers kept hold of the point as he tipped Wright-Phillips' overhead kick over the bar.

Heard that Rovers have been in touch with Spurs already about Sherwood and also talked with Harry Redknapp separately. Either one would be OK but would prefer Harry or even both! No one else in the frame at the moment....not even the obvious ones like McCarthy or Curbs.
Neither of whom would not be right for us......ok for championship but no good in the prem.

Was probably his last game for rovers. I'm not saying who as he was just having a conversation with his mates and I was listening in. Today's game - for a team that knows each other well .. we had arguments over who takes throw ins, Scott dann taking free kicks (straight to them time after time or out for a goal kick). I was around a load of Charlton fans and quite rightly were saying .... Rovers should smash them, but they didn't as it was blatant they weren't bothered. I thought Christmas had come early last night but the reality is the club isn't together and whoever comes in has one hell of a challenge on his hands. Against Bristol I saw us outplayed for the most part and win, today I saw us outplayed and draw. A solid, tried and tested manager is what we need. ASAP.

Would prefer an experienced pragmatic manager - McCarthy or even Benitez might consider it. Harry wouldn't move up here. Wouldn't mind sherwood (he's highly rated at spurs) but NOT shearer. He's not cut out to be a manager. Or how about Tugay and Salgado??

Dont know how much truth is in that, my mates brother is a chef there and text her to tell her. We need an experienced manager and not another coach who thinks they can do the job. I hope everyone gets behind the team at the Wolves game we desperately need a big home win.
Its Steve Keans birthday tomorrow, he got a massive present off the Rovers fans - two fingers!!!!

He especially mentioned looking forward to working under Shebby Singh.
He's good with foreign owners as well due his huge cultural intelligence.
I think he will be a good appointment. When does he start >?

Nor do I think inexperienced ex-Rovers favourites such as Sherwood, Tuggy or Flitty are the way forward. Above all, the club needs stabilising and fast. Unknown quantities are not the way to do that.
Shearer also falls into that category. I also doubt he'd leave his comfy pundit chair and the same goes for Curbishley.
McCarthy and Souness are probably smarter suggestions I've read, and of the two I'd probably prefer Souness. McCarthy looked a bit helpless and almost defeatist when Wolves were struggling in the Prem. I know a fair few Wolves fans who weren't happy with his lack of tactical nouse when under the cosh. Both could work out pretty well though.
I think we'd be better off with the likes of Lee Clarke (now taken), Simon Grayson, Aidy Boothroyd or similar types. Managers that have proven their worth in the lower leagues and would most likely jump at the opportunity to manage us.
Some may question "who'd manage us under the Venky circus," but it's judged relative to what's already on their table. We've been an established Premier League club, we've spent 8mil on one player, we've still got quality in our squad that most teams dream of.
It's not without its risks, Ince would be a good example of the suggestions i've made, but on the flip-side Hughes is another. With the backing of the fans, I think there's a good chance a relatively young, focused and previously successful manager would do well.

Also, Murphy, Dann, Orr and Etuhu give the ball away much more than Rochina does, Rochina is just an easy target in that respect.
Rochina scored more goals than Hoilet last seaon if you compare minutes played, in fact, Hoilett only score 2 goals more but played almost every game.
Maybe players like Rochina and Formica should just go as they are talented players and their confidence levels will only be damaged by management who feel more physically solid players who give the ball away more often with less attacking ability will perform better. Eric Black Out!
In my view we need atleast 3 players with strong tecnical ability playing. This could be Nunes, Gomes and Rochina and with Formica as backup, supporting by two solid central mid-fielders (who don't slow them down too much).
