RAMSBOTTOM United clinched a ‘cup’ double over Brigg Town thanks to Gary Stopforth’s second half strike.

Stopforth scored direct from a corner to dump the Evo-Stik League First Division South side out of the FA Vase – just weeks after knocking them out of the FA Cup.

And the Rams could be joined by Clitheroe in the next round after they scored a dramatic late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Northwich Victoria.

It was Ramsbottom’s first foray in to the FA Trophy and they made sure it didn’t stop at the first attempt thanks to Stopworth’s bizarre goal.

After a goalless first half, Stopworth scored one proved to be the winner when his in-swinging corner in the 51st minute evaded everyone and go straight in.

Brigg will be glad to see the back of Ramsbottom having lost 3-0 to them in the FA Cup last month. There was plenty of drama at Northwich Victoria as stand-up skipper Jack Higgins kept Clitheroe’s Trophy hopes alive.

Adriano Rigoglioso gave the Evo-Stik League Division One South side the lead on the stroke of half time.

But Clitheroe mounted a spirited second half fightback and Higgins rose to head home a Danny Bell free kick to force the replay.
