Steve Kean sets his own targets at Blackburn Rovers
STEVE Kean insists he has set his own targets at Blackburn Rovers – after rubbishing reports that failure to win at Bristol City tomorrow will spell the end of his Ewood Park career.
The Rovers boss has been dogged by rumours surrounding his future for the past 21 months and, despite yesterday being nominated for the Championship manager of the month, was subject to more speculation surrounding his position.
A national newspaper yesterday reported that Kean would be dismissed if Rovers dropped points in any of their next three matches after being set a pre-season target of 16 points from the first seven games.
But Kean is adamant the only target he has been given is his own, promotion, and believes the club are on course for a return to the Premier League.
He said: “I haven’t been set a target. We set our own targets, we know what it is going to take to win the league and that is what we are trying to do.
“We know, looking at the fixture list, it is a tough one but we are on course at the minute to get promoted with an average of two points per game.
“We are sitting in an automatic promotion position going into a tough game against Bristol City and then two home games.
“There is one target and the target is to get promoted.”
The Lancashire Telegraph understands owners Venky’s have high expectations this campaign, with global advisor Shebby Singh ready to advise his bosses to pull the trigger at any signs of their promotion bid coming off the rails.
No specific points target has been given to us though and, when asked if he would be sacked if Rovers did not win on Saturday, Kean replied: “I have never heard that.
“If we win on Saturday we are not going to promoted there and then, if we draw or lose we are not not going to get promoted. I think we have made a great start against some good teams.
“I don’t know where that type of comment comes from. I would like someone to put their name to it because then it would be easy to argue the toss.
“We are getting on with it. We are getting on with it as a club, the owners, the directors, the staff and the supporters. Everyone.”
Meanwhile Kean has revealed out of favour winger Simon Vukcevic could be heading out on loan imminently, having struggled to make an impression at Ewood.
The Montenegrin international has hardly played at Rovers since being signed in August 2011, with Kean admitting he might move on in search of regular football.
Kean said: “He has been a great lad, has trained well every day, it is just there have been other players in front of him and done well.
“There is a lot of competition in the wide areas. I know in international games he has played just behind the striker but we have a lot of players who can play there as well.”

I feel abit sorry for him. Another Goodwillie - not been given a fair crack of the whip. Why buy them Kean if not use them. Oh, I get it, you have no say on who plays! Forgot that you are still a coach with a managers title!

During his first season at the club, Vukčević made little impact in helping the club survive the Premier League season due to a lack of appearances. Vukčević only appeared 10 times in the season and only mananged to score 2 goals. It was rumoured that Vukčević had contract issues midway through the season. This meant that he did not make a single appearance after 7 January 2012.

Yes we are second in the league but this down to good fortune two draws both in which we were leading in, The Leeds game enough should of been evidence enough that the Venkys to replace him 2-0 up to go 2-3 behind and to happy with a point.
Hull game we should of been two or three goals up at half time and got lucky against a very good Leicester side.
Venkys will not see a return for their investment at Blackburn Rovers until they close the circus that is Steve Kean’s management of team affairs and reopen the football club that Jack Walker, John Williams and Tom Finn helped turn into the best run club in the country. More Kean means less revenue from gates and sponsorships and advertising.
I find it sickening that club chose not to continue the WEC partnership just because their MD is involved with BRSIT

Who would target 2 points per game!? NO-ONE. He's made these "targets" all thoughout his managerial career (all 2 years) and thier always pathetic points targets that we never meet. What a looser targeting 2 points per game in the championship.

Tomorrow I go down to Bristol to watch my beloved BRFC, and I will give you no credence at all just the shirt and the badge will suffice.
Your a nonsense of the highest order.

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that something underhand has happened re. Vukcevic. Perhaps if Kean had played him from time to time we might have accumulated more points last season.

You'll notice the Vietnamese national manager and Venkys guest of honour is a certain Henrique Calisto, who by pure coincidence was the manager of Academica Coimbra when a certain Steve Kean pitched up there in 1988.
You might also notice the date of the event - June 2010 - months before Venkys took over Rovers.
So there we have a link Venkys-Calisto-Kean months before the takeover.
I won't go into any more detail but I've also been told that Calisto's son is a Portuguese football agent...

Ironically in the week Steve Kean was named as a candidate for the N Power Championship manager of the month his job is under the utmost scrutiny.
Steve Kean faces a defining week as Blackburn boss with one eye on the top of the Championship table and the other on his future at Ewood Park.
The clubs Indian owners Venky’s told Kean before the start of the season that he needed a minimum of 16 points from the opening 7 games to keep his job.
Even though Blackburn are second in the table with 8 points, and unbeaten in their first 4 matches, sources close to the Rao family indicated this week that the ultimatum remains.
That means Kean (pic above) must win his next 3 games in the space of 6 days – away to Bristol City on Saturday and at home to Barnsley and Middlesbrough next week – or face the sack.
This is further evidence that Kean is losing the support of Mrs Anuradha Desai, the family matriarch who has saved him from the axe twice already.
The owners have backed him by spending upwards of £15 million to bring in 12 new players this summer, un heard of in today’s N Power Championship, but it is understood that they remain unconvinced by Blackburn’s struggling performances.
They also accept that the decision to keep the unpopular manager has hit the club financially.
Attendances have dipped well below 14,000 – the lowest at Ewood Park for almost 20 years – with thousands of fans refusing to return until Kean goes.
Season ticket sales have also been hard hit.
It also understood major sponsors have withdrawn their support for the club and two potential shirt sponsors have pulled out of deals because of the on going turmoil.
Gates are expected to fall further whilst Kean is in his job.
This highlights the folly of not sacking Kean following relegation from the Premiership and starting a fresh with a new manager. Another disastrous decision by the Venky’s.
Reg.
Footnote:
It is believed that the story has been leaked from Ewood Park by Brother Ventkatesh Rao who is anxious to see the back of Kean. Ventkatesh leaked a similar story in May telling Australian test cricketer Brett Lee that Kean was about to be sacked.
Lee put the news on his Twitter page and Mrs Desai in her annoyance at the breach of confidence by Ventkaesh reversed the decision. Let us hope that is not the case this time.
