Givet will seek Rovers talks
9:13am Friday 6th July 2012 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
GAEL Givet will be seeking talks about his Blackburn Rovers future today – although the club look set to hold firm on his contracted ‘relegation pay cut’.
The popular Frenchman is keen to remain in East Lancashire this season, despite the club’s drop into the Championship, but will look to renegotiate his contract before pledging his commitment.
The 30-year-old fans favourite is one of a number of Rovers players who has been forced into a drastic pay cut after Premier League relegation, understood to be in the region of 50 per cent, due to a clause in their contracts.
Givet’s French representative has already indicated the no-nonsense defender would be seeking an exit if that clause was enforced – but stressed the player hoped an agreement could be reached.
Rovers believe Givet could play a key role in the club’s bid to earn an instant top flight return and are hopeful they can persuade the defender to remain in East Lancashire.
They are unlikely though to move too much away from from his current terms, knowing a compro-mise with one player would lead to the rest asking for the same.
Givet is still contracted to the club but Rovers’ global advisor Shebby Singh has already admitted they won’t be able to keep ‘unhappy players’.
Givet reported back for pre-season training at Brockhall yesterday as Steve Kean’s squad were put through their annual physical ‘tests’.
They will depart for a training camp in Austria on Sunday, where new signings Nuno Gomes and Fabio Nunes will join up for the first time.
Meanwhile Rovers are still in dialogue with Sporting Lisbon as they look to bring energetic midfielder Adrien Silva to Ewood Park.
The 23-year-old former youth international has told Portuguese press he is happy to stay at Lisbon but Rovers have far from given up the chase.
It is believed the player would still be open to a move to Ewood Park but agreement has to be reached with Sporting, with discussions ongoing.
Rovers see Silva as the perfect midfield foil to new signing Danny Murphy but, if their efforts failed to materialise, they would look elsewhere for a box-to-box midfielder.
Meanwhile it is understood Rovers are close to appointing former defender Colin Hendry onto the coaching staff, after weeks of talks.

On the other hand Gael may feel that the demise of BRFC is down ultimately to one man (SK), has he had a pay cut???
Yes, he has signed a contract; but when he did SK was possibly not the manager then, and then according to Venkys their 'charter' was 'Top 10 Prem, no problem. Keans declaration was: relegation, no chance.
I would say he has a reasonable case for complaint. As does the support.
Given the consequence's of the club caving in to his demand's, it could on the other hand be seen as a sign of intent by the support i.e. we (Venkys) are willing to pull out all the stops to come good on our promises.

Wouldn't it be nice if they spent some money and shown some ambition to get back to the Prem instead of another year of cost cutting.
Where's this "Substancial budget" that Kean talked about only a week or two ago ?
"Buisness almost done" and they've spent nowt again.

Givet would be invaluable to Rovers in the championship...his experience and determination to win are key factors as to why Rovers should do all they can to reach a compromise with him on salary. Let Givet go and we would have to replace him and that wouldn't be easy as there don't seem to be that many good defenders (who can play CH or RB) available.

One thing I will say is that Rovers need to play hard ball to get the best money for want away players like Olsson and Formica, it seems everyone is looking into bargain basement purchases for top drawer players - Venkys need to stay firm and make it clear that if clubs want our good players - they better have the money to stump up for them as we're not about to just give them away either.

It's 'give and take' that is the order of the game, and for that you need experienced nous in who you are selling against who you are buying.

It seems from my perspective that all the money is going on an inflated management structure when the business end suffers just so the owners can get their cut, the onlt solution is to not bring henry on board, and if they have to, some else must go, slash the management positions pay by half or get rid i.e. Kean should only be allowed to claim job seekers and work less than 16 hours a week to allow him to do so, cos theres better managers on the dole.....

Looking at BRFC in particular, in this respect, does anyone know the details of Kean's remuneration package and how much of a reduction he has taken due to relegation? After all, it is entirely due his incompetence that we find ourselves in the Championship. It seems that players contract details are fairly common knowledge but not the manager's. It would be appalling if Kean has retained full salary.

i don't really buy this 'fall out with kean' assertion. there was a period when he was not picked, sure, but every player goes through that. given the statements he has made about wanting to stay, i would imagine he's quite happy with everything apart from the potential pay cut.
from the club's point of view, you can see the risk of negotiating with givet then leading to a whole load of new negotiations. But maybe they need to accept it's partly a consequence of the lack of attention they paid last year which contributed to our relegation, and they should therefore take it on the chin.
looking at the squad though, it's hard to think the investment in a player with proven ability and commitment would not be a worthwhile investment at this point.

agement skills.
As for Colin, I just hope he doesn't get sucked in to all the BS spoted by the "manager" and remembers where his loyalties lie...us fans who have worshipped him as a true legend. We all have memories of him...mine was FMC and an away game at Everton in the Championship season when he was a true braveheart, theowing his body on the line and inspiring his fellow defenders.

Hendry is god although god spelled backwards is dog !
One former and one present hero. I know which I prefer to continue that tradition but the 'Odious One' & others will no doubt not move an inch on the terms for Givet, and we will be left with the latter adding to the circus already complete with all fools.
I happened to see G. Handley yesterday briefly driving by in his rather large car with arm casually hanging out of the window merrily whistling away with not a care in the world. I wondered to myself if he knew something I didn't and maybe he was the potential new lynchpin in filling the void left by Givet ? Trained and nurtured by he who has have no grace and, along the way those that have fallen from grace ! Which all summed up descends into an utter disgrace.
Run by drinkers, gamblers forfeiting payments, caste system shysters.
That milord is the case for the prosecution.
What say ye in defense ?
Givet must stay although I seriously doubt that will be the case ?

Givet would be invaluable to Rovers in the championship...his experience and determination to win are key factors as to why Rovers should do all they can to reach a compromise with him on salary. Let Givet go and we would have to replace him and that wouldn't be easy as there don't seem to be that many good defenders (who can play CH or RB) available.
Give Givet his Euros...
We all complained bitterly that the club was 'rudderless' and needed some structure after they emptied all the offices (almost) at Ewood last season - well now we have some communication and some structure.
We do need to give this structure a chance albeit I do not include our 'manager' in that...
Anyway we should have enough 'incomings' from the sales of Robinson, Olsson and Dann to cover the wages of all our players for this season.

Givet signed his contract under the last regime when we would never have forseen this bunch of clowns in charge, it is common knowledge Murphy and Gomes are on big money so why not pay Givet what he is asking afterall we need defenders and it would be cheaper to pay him a few quid than replace him with a nobody,Givet is everything we will need in the championship.

In my opinion, he is in the top three for our club in the last twenty-odd years along with Shearer and Tugay (sorry, four with Friedel). His management record isn't great by any stretch and I'm not sure about his coaching ability, but if all that he does is bring some grit and determination to the defence that tightens it up, then it's a worthwhile move. What happened outside of football, on the back of a terrible event, doesn't (or shouldn't) come in to it. I'm pretty sure he has to come to terms with it himself as the man that he is.
And there are signs that improvements in the structure of the club are coming about (accepting the disgraceful way it was dismantled in the first place). 'Kean Out' is a given for me and I haven't renewed, so don't come back with any of the usual c**p.
Having said that, does anyone know if there is a link or what the reason is that most of our signings happen to be Portuguese? Serious question.

What makes him think he can do anything to redress his inadequacies. The first think the fans should have expected from him was an apology for his failures last season. Unfortunately we will not get one as he doesn't think he has failed, just that all the other teams were a bit luckier.

Why are so many people turning into Fester all of a sudden.
What is there to be positive about? We are a shambles, the management structure full of parasitic toads and only further failure on the pitch to look forward to.
Jesus wept wake up! After the transfer window closes our squad will be weaker than ever and we shall be brushed aside.
I can already hear the Brilliant One making his excuses "Its early days, we can learn from this, Hull are a good team" "Well Leeds are seasoned Chamionship contenders, I have a young team" "bottom at Christmas is not a disaster, we have a winnable match at Bristol coming up"
Non attendance is the only thing that will change things.

for me, it doesn't need to be any more complex than that. of course, we would all have liked the last 18 months to have been very different, but it is not. there will be very little venkys can do to stop me supporting the club in the normal way. it doesn't for one moment mean i need to trust them with my money, like them or anything else.

I can't understand for one minute the attitude of some towards Colin Hendry.
This on the basis that all that I have read/heard over 'the loan' is factual.
Colin, as a player, will always be remembered by me as a 100%er. But, his personal life is another issue, as sorry as I am for the loss of his wife.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) life does not begin and end at the gates to Ewood/Brockhall.
Any wrongdoings in life generally should be answerable to, irrespective.

I am unable to cast aside how we fans have been ill-informed, ignored and disrespected since the takeover.
Without going over all the old issues, there is not much that convinces me that this club is going in the right direction and why? because we have no plan, no agenda. We cannot see where we are going.
There is no common 'goal' to bind us together. Why? Because nobody (Shebby apart) has tried to talk to us, involve us. John Williams was universally popular because of his open, transparent approach. In his place we have a wall of silence. Nobody to say why certain decisions were made and what their purpose was. Because of that silence, rumours start of sinister deeds that therefore gain credibilty and support.
That the Action Group can present a 400 page dossier to the EPL and the FA, supported by a host of local leaders and politicians, that is now under investigation only serves to suggest malpractice.
And still no-one says sorry for the mess we are in.
I remain positive though, that one day those individuals who are protecting their own interests will eventually leave and we will pick up the pieces.

Undertstand the Rangers one and assuming supporting Kean is another. Is the move to City the third? Not sure that at the time it wasn't the right thing for him to do. Can't remember the circumstances though, so happy to be put right.

I can't understand for one minute the attitude of some towards Colin Hendry.
As for your response to the Portuguese link, well, that was just a schoolboy response.

After last years disasterous attempts at defending we are desperate for some quality defensive coaching and none better than someone who still bleeds blue and white and has a wealth of experience.
Colin Hendry would be a most welcome addition to the coaching staff.
The anti-Venky cry is old hat now, they are here, learning quickly from their mistakes and will still be here for some time to come, so instead of wasting your time knocking the club and what it is now trying to put right, use your energy in getting behind the club and aim for a quick return to the big time.
If the proverbial 'worm' is now turning for the better in India. It's about time!
Actions speak louder than words though and to suggest that the "anti-Venkys" cry is old hat now is utterly ridiculous.
It would be rather like a loyal wife welcoming back her husband after he has had a string of affairs, and then naively thinking everything's ok and all is forgotten.
They have a great deal more to prove in every area of how they run the club BEFORE the majority of fans will consider a reprieve.
If Venkys have learned their lesson and are wanting to prove themselves (and I think there has been a shift in their attitude - only time will tell how much and how well!). Don't they realise that the REAL catalyst for change would be finding a replacement for Steve Kean and issuing Kean his P45?
Maybe, just maybe..... they've been down that route already but have realised that after their abysmal showing over the past couple of years in charge, any decent manager with credentials and/or a growing career in management sees Rovers as soiled goods.
Who knows what their plan is....
For me it's a simple calculation....if the cost of keeping a quality player like Givet (who is a known quantity and assuming he wants to stay AND give it his all for the club) is less than that of bringing in a simlar replacement and their is a budget for the same. Then let him stay. But it then begs the question, who could you get of a similar standard and who would want to come?
I suppose it's also the domino effect of what happens if he does stay at Rovers though...can they afford to do the same with other players....and what happens if the roll of the Promotion dice doesn't go their way. Damned if you do damned if you don't. Who'd want to own a football club eh?...lol
PS Do we know how many other senior players have similar clauses in their contracts?

That the Action Group can present a 400 page dossier to the EPL and the FA, supported by a host of local leaders and politicians, that is now under investigation only serves to suggest malpractice.
And still no-one says sorry for the mess we are in.
I remain positive though, that one day those individuals who are protecting their own interests will eventually leave and we will pick up the pieces.
.
Current thinking is - we sign a couple of players and put a spin on all the remaining good ones leaving and stick Agnew and Shaw out for a bit of a PR onslaught and fans will cave in and buy season tickets regardless of Kean.
.
Well I think on this occasion the fans have had enough and can see through this more than a Keanocchio comment and most will not buy ST's. Agnew as good as admitted on radio this week that only 10% of fans will buy ST's regardless and the majority of the rest have to be won over.
.
We know where he could start to achieve that but have the MD and OD got the authority to sack kean? Probably not.
.
Hold out blues and keep that ST cash in your pockets becasue under 5,000 sold brings shame on these people and the site of 20,000+ empty seats will embarass them.

The one thing that unites us all, is an unchanging attitude demanding that kean has to go! Lets not fall into the trap of listing names and organisations at the end of every posting, we all need to do whatever it takes to keep the focus on removing Kean and appointing a football manager instead. In all honesty, I know little enough about Shebby singh, I accept that the Venkys are naive, know little about football and been duped by others with financial self-interest. The facts are that the signings we have recently made are pretty good and genuinely seem to be aimed at a real promotion attempt. I do not credit Kean with any of these signings, they more likely stem from singh and others. Every time we bang on about Anderson, Venkys, kentaro et al, we take the focus off the one individual that should take the blame for what happens on the pitch.... I would still like to see the whole sorry bunch out of our club, but the one who should be called to account immediately, if not last year, is steve Kean; I tell you what, please respond to this post by telling me which past Rovers manager was so disrespected, mistrusted, and utterly loathed, more than our present excuse for a manager. I can't think of one, and every time he stands, like some dementing weeble, on Rovers pitch, he shows utter contempt for those serious supporters who also give to the club week in, week out whilst all he has done is take, take, take! We should all be roaring KEAN OUT every chance we get. This is the finest rallying call I've seen on here for a long time. Bombard the Rovers board with Kean Out emails, take out newspapr adverts, chant it at all games, either inside or outside the ground. Stand outside kean's house and shout it! The message WILL get through, eventually.
Reluctance to become involved in seeking his dismissal is apathy. At the beginning of the Second World War, American apathy led to six million deaths before their eventual involvement. Do you wish to see the club dead on its feet before doing something?
The contiued rallying cry of Kean Out! is essential to create a momentum that will, eventually, be acted upon. Silence will imply acceptance and victory for the naive owners and their incompetent lacky, Kean.

I can't understand for one minute the attitude of some towards Colin Hendry.
There is a new structure being implemented at Ewood, alas, it is a flawed and weak alternative to the strong and successful administration under John Williams. The second rate Shaw and Agnew are purely the Venky's Patsy's and will take the rap for whatever happens to the club this next season.
I cannot, I'm afraid, agree with your views on Colin Hendry. As a player he was exceptional, in both performance and inspiration. He has suffered tremendously in his personal life since then but some of it has been of his own making. Borrowing, what to most folk, are huge amounts of money to settle gambling debts, then turning to verbal abuse of those friends kind enough to trust you, when unable to repay that debt, is not the gritty determination I wish to see instilled in our young defenders.
Football is high profile with public and prviate lives intertwined.
Sad to say, his appointment would not be the rehabilitation into football that he seeks, nor the panacea sought by Rovers fans.

1. How is booing the team when they score helping the cause (game v swansea I think)
2. For the last 2/3 seasons the vast majority of fans were after salgado being dropped he was yet you complain.
3. If kean was sacked who would come in with fickle fans like glen mullin (who stated that the club would be in administration dec 2011 (still waiting for it too happen)
4. Most fans wanted rid of big sam (reap what you sow)
5. No one wants to but the club of venkys
6. If you dont want to renew your season tickets good dont keep ya money let the people who want to go and watch a game of football with a pint and a pie enjoy it without you lot being morons at the game it helps noone.
