Blackburn Rovers new guy Gomes faces 'biggest battle' at Ewood Park
10:16am Thursday 5th July 2012 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
NEW BOY Veteran striker Nuno Gomes
SHEBBY Singh insists Nuno Gomes has the desire to succeed in the “biggest battle of his life” – as Blackburn Rovers look to conclude most of their summer business before the weekend.
Rovers’ global advisor is adamant the signing of former Portugal striker Gomes is not a gamble and believes the veteran will add vital experience to their Premier League promotion push.
Gomes, who turned 36 today, joins Danny Murphy, Leon Best and young Portuguese winger Fabio Nunes, who signed a three-year deal yesterday, as Rovers’ new boys this summer and Singh is happy with the progress made so far.
Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva is believed to still be a top target for Rovers, as the player looks to negotiate his release from his current employers, with Singh admitting business is now nearly done - ahead of today’s return to pre season training.
He said: “We have signed Danny Murphy, Leon Best, Nuno Gomes, and Fabio Nunes. These four are already here to start pre season.
“We hope we can conclude the one more signing that we want by the end of the week, maybe then we will look for one more player but we want our plans in place for the weekend.
“You never can say never because something exceptional might come up but I would say I only expect two more players to come in, at the most, and that will be it before January. I am hopeful one of these will be before the weekend.
“We have to have almost concluded everything by this weekend because we want everyone to start pre-season training together.”
Rovers want Silva in England for talks tomorrow as they look to land their man.
Eyebrows have been raised at Rovers giving Gomes a two-year deal but Singh has quickly played down talk of his signing being a risk.
He insists the player turned down more lucrative offers to start his Rovers adventure and believes his desire, despite having played at the top level for most of his career, will be there for all to see.
“It is a big signing, like Danny Murphy was for us,” he said.
“We see Nuno Gomes playing in the withdrawn striker role, linking the midfield and striker, with his ability and experience to hold the ball up.
“We know it is going to be hard and fast and that is where players like Danny Murphy and Nuno Gomes become very important.
“When the rain is pelting down, and it becomes very hard, we know Danny and Nuno will help the younger lads through. We know Danny Murphy won’t shirk the responsibility and we know Nuno will not shirk the responsibility.
“Nuno turned down offers from Australia, the MLS and the Middle East, after chats with myself and the manager. That speaks volumes of his desire.
“He could have gone to sunnier climes, where there was more money available, but he wanted to come to the most difficult league in the world to get out of. That desire he has expressed is very, very important.
“Of course there were more lucrative offers on the table for him for an easier life but he has come because he has a desire to succeed in what could be the biggest battle of his entire career.
“We don’t see it as a gamble. We are not expecting 20 goals from him. Having a player of his experience and stature can only help the likes of Ruben Rochina, Mauro Formica, David Goodwillie and Leon Best.”
Discussions are expected with a number of the club’s want away players as they return for pre season today, as a few look to renegotiate their contracts after enforced pay cuts.
Martin Olsson and Steven Nzonzi both want to quit Ewood, while Paul Robinson’s future is also still uncertain. Argentinian outfit River Plate are understood to be interested in Mauro Formica but have yet to make contact with Rovers.

That's the 'ins' almost done.
The important bit is now the 'outs'.
It is hard to say whether all of our known 'wish for outs', will actually leave. Due to Rovers agreeing, clubs actually coming in for them, or a change of heart by the indvidual.
Will Shebby be able to entice one or two to stay? Its hard to say.
Will Kean still in charge be the 'stumbling block'? Reduced salary is certainly an issue.
I certainly think Shebby will be 'checking the pulse' of the support toward these signings, and so far there are some that have got the 'itch' back to return. Can't criticize them for that, its a very hard habit to shake off.
However, for myself the proof is in the pudding, as I have heard all this before (but from Kean) . Time will tell whether Shebby truly is a 'new broom'.

Let's see what happens. Not convinced anything changes with Kean still in charge.

How can Blackburn Rovers have a fresh start without clearing the most incompetent part of the club. If the players are allowed to play and don't have contract issues or mysterious injuries we'll have a decent season.

Come on Mr Cryer - 'OUR GLOBAL ADVISER' - we must be a laughing stock with titles like this - we are a small Lancashire Town and did have a great well run Club until these idiots arrived on the scene along with their second rate Manager - this is just more idiotic 'hot air' from people full of their own self importance.
OUT WITH KEAN VENKYS AGNEW SINGH
And Mr Cryer it would appear from your script that you have fallen into the trap of believing their garbage!!
In all that he 'issues' it will go through the editor to be proof read.
Since the debacle of he who must not be named the LT editing will still be a bit of a minefield.
It would be a very brave man who put a downer on every individual capture, before they have even laced their boots up. This despite what each individual, including AC think of the guy.
In the background wheels are turning with respect to Venkys (mis?)handling of BRFC, so I think its best that we just let that proceed to its conclusion, and what will be will be.
We will soon be finding out how are 'new dawn' is shaping up. I, like yourself do not harbour great hopes, based upon past performance, but lets wait and see.

Lets not kid ourselves, if we polled all Rovers fans and asked them whether they believe that Kean owns a share of Rovers, i think the emphatic answer would be "YES".
All we can hope for then, is that if Shebby is as good as his word, if results don't go our way quickly, that he pushes the shining one upstairs behind a desk.

I still think if we had signed 2 good full backs in the last close season instead of playing the pensioners Salgado and Givet (Centre half not full back) at full back we would never have been in relegation trouble. We were cruising 1-0 up against Fulham away, another soft goal given away because of a full backs mistake changed the game and we lost yet another game we should have won.

I do not feel somehow that are squad will not adapt easily to the Championship as the other managers in there are experienced guys who have their teams fully organised. We have Portugese,Argentinia
ns and Spaniards who may have more technical qualities but will they count for anything on a cold winter's day at Hull?We also have the bald one who really needs to go back to training college and re learn tatics and coaching as he tended to lose matches we had already won by making stupid substitutions last season.

What does Shabby actually 'advise' on? Its laughable that a guy who probably can't even name half the clubs in the Championship and who has no right to even talk about English football having never had any experience of it is in a position to tell Rovers supporters what is happening and hold an influential role at BRFC. The sooner this clown follows Kean out the door the better.
I don't want to listen to what some muppet from Malaysia has to say about MY football club. Singh has shown he has no morals by taking the money and changing his mind over Kean. I want to hear what the man himself has to say. Still waiting for that apology Steve.

Our club has been attacked by an incompetent individual and management consortium to which no apologyor sign of remorse for their actions has been forthcoming.
We should not grace them with our presence until they have done the decent thing and acknowledged the fact and dismissed the key person for our demise.
Only then would the true process of reconciliation begin.
Moral integrity and fortitude is required in these testing of times.
Don't relent even under the temptations that they are so obviously trying to put in out way.
To actually show the personal qualities required has proven beyond them and I include certain senior players of responsibility within the club as well.

Apart from Weasel Kean, who claims to have invented, designed and built the bath himself, after (of course) he discovered water and the entire concept that Spiderman wouldn't theoretically be able to get himself out of the aforementioned bath.
But then Kean is an alcoholic, a criminal and a liar.
And most depressingly, his job title suggests that he is the manager of our football club (even if the reality shows that he's nothing more than a massively overpromoted bibs & cones man).

Always in the past (since the forties I think) Rovers and Preston fans have either dug-up or buried coffins depending on when one of the teams got relegated or promoted. Seems the Preston fans caused some problems after the 'celebrations' at their latest burial after last seasons relegation. (The burial is in the 'cellar' of local BB pub)
However the good news is that some Rovers fans and a Preston councilor got together and arranged for the Rovers coffin to be taken across to Blackburn and on the 22nd July it will be taken in a short procession from the Fox and Hounds to the Aqueduct where the Rovers 'burial' will take place amid many pints and much commiserations.
Unfortunately the usual floats and band etc will not be able to be included due to the busy road etc...but at least we can keep one Rovers tradition going.

Do we need a "global adviser"? To advise on what ? Surely we need a "how to get out of the Championship adviser" someone with experience of doing the job in hand.
Do Venkys and Shebby seriously think that the world is longing for news about a provincial club which has sunk to absolute lows on and off the field ?
Kean's thin credentials were that he had played in the Portuguese lower division and coached some unsuccessful clubs and now Shebby... man of the match against Shrewsbury. Talk about inspiring respect in the dressing room and fear in the opposition.
Three Portuguese who've never played in England doesn't inspire much hope.
Shebby alas will find it easier to get out of the Championship than he thinks - but in the wrong direction.
Bottom half of the division at best by Xmas and the shame of being below Burnley, I predict.

Just read that due to Police objections we can't have the historic and traditional 'coffin burial' ceremony at Bamber Bridge this year.
The intrigue as always wanted me to go attend one of these.
Grand tradition. Good dignity.

Shebbys comments confirm my beliefs that you shouldnt even TALK anout BLACKBURN unless:
1) you were born within 3 miles of the ground
2) you live in the town
3) you work in the town
4) you con other towns to bring EXTRA money into the town
5) you wifes from the town
6) you have a pure Blackburn accent
7) you have attended 95% of home fixtures, 50% of away, and 50% of reserve fixtures over 50% of your life
8) you drink at least 25 pints a week, in the town
9) Pies are your main form of food
10) you have never voted for the Conservatives
11) you have more than 3 dodgy addresses so you can open more betting accounts with more free bets!
12) your not called Jerome, Nathanial, Timothy, Gurtrude or Trevor!

Murphy is 35 and Gomes 36 so that tells me you are going backwards and have no vision for the future.Best you can hope for is to reach the top 10 but squad wise you are well behind Bolton-who will walk the league- Wolves Leicester Cardiff Birmingham and with Forest being taken over by the Kuwaitis that will be the top 6 done and dusted.
Wolves = LOL S*it
Leicester= scrapping the barrel with that one
Cardiff= playoffs just
Birmingham= S*it
Forest= your having a laugh aint ya with that one

Two has beens, two youngsters and Best who we have actually spent a couple of million on and some short sighted Idiots think all`s well In the garden!! Just like you say 12m for Samba, probably Olssen, N`zonzi, and a couple more will move on besides Hoilett, which will bring in a few more million, and we are supposed to believe they have turned a corner, another corner to taking this club to It`s knees and a bumper pay day for the parasites who own and run the club. Biggest scam yet In my opinion. For those choosing to stay away, good on you, for those who carry on going down to Ewood, your choice, but don`t let this shower fool you any longer. I`ll be back once Kean, Anderson, Singh, Venky`s and any other parasite that Is In with them sod off. Love Rovers, hate the parasites that are eating away at Jacks legacy.
Well £2M net spent and the transfers are nearly done! Samba money (£12M) went where again?
What happens to the money if Nzonzi, Robinson and Olsson are sold?
