Blackburn Rovers close in on Toon striker Best

KEAN KNOWS BEST Newcastle striker Leon Best takes on Rovers at Ewood Park last season KEAN KNOWS BEST Newcastle striker Leon Best takes on Rovers at Ewood Park last season

BLACKBURN Rovers resumed talks with Leon Best’s representatives yesterday as they look to finalise a deal for the Newcastle striker and fend off interest from rival clubs.

Rovers have already agreed a fee with the Magpies for the Republic of Ireland international, understood to be in the region of £3m, and will be eager to complete the transfer quickly amid interest from Premier League sides Southampton and Norwich.

Rovers met Best’s agent yesterday as further discussions were held over personal terms for the 25-year-old.

Southampton are said to have been weighing up a bid to take the forward back to the south coast, after starting his career at St Mary’s in 2004.

Saints, however, do already have fierce competition in the striker department after boss Nigel Adkins recently added Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez to a front line containing Rickie Lambert and Billy Sharp.

Norwich have also been linked following the appointment of Chris Hughton - the manager who took Best to Newcastle from Coventry two years ago.

But Steve Kean also knows Best, having worked with him during a spell as assistant to Chris Coleman at Coventry, and Rovers are still believed to be in pole position to complete a deal.

Rovers want to bolster their strike force, with Yakubu set to complete a £1m move to Chinese side Guangzhou R&F because of a relegation exit clause in his Ewood contract, and are likely to be able to offer the striker regular football – albeit in the Championship.

Kean is also due to lose attacking option Junior Hoilett this summer as the Canadian opts to move elsewhere at the end of his Rovers deal.

Best has scored 10 Premier League goals since joining Newcastle but has found himself further down the pecking order at St James’ Park following the arrival of Demba Ba and then Papiss Cisse.

He has made seven appearances for the Republic of Ireland since 2009, qualifying for the country through his mother’s side of the family, but was overlooked by Giovanni Trapattoni for the squad for Euro 2012.

If Rovers were able to complete a deal he would become the club’s second signing of the summer after midfielder Danny Murphy, who finalised a two-year deal with the club on Monday following the end of his contract at Fulham.

I think Kean being manager also spoils things quite a lot - having thought about it long and hard.

There are no rational reasons to give Kean another chance. All excuses used up. It's been a disaster and there was no fight from the team to stay up. I will never forget Spurs away with no goal attempts and Wigan at home was little better.

I lived in Coventry while Best was there and watched them a fair few times... and he was awful! He's improved at Newcastle but a lot of that has been down to the service he has had from midfield - Jonas, Barton, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Cabaye... Bit better than our midfield will be next season, even with Danny "The Saviour" Murphy! You don't see Best scoring brilliant individual efforts a la Cisse.

Just a reminder of Kean and Best's time at Cov;
- Kean's final season, finished 19th in the Championship with a goal difference of -17 (at the time this was Cov's worst season in 45 years)
- That followed Coleman/Kean first season at Cov where they finished 17th with a -11 goal difference
- The season after Kean left they finished one place higher than the previous season (18th) but had a goal difference of just -4
- Best's final full season at Cov (again with Kean as coach) he scored 4 goals in 35 appearances (ironically Scott Dann scored 4 in 35 for Cov in this same season!)

I know Stevie likes his stats, so I hope he reads and appreciates that research!

This is the Venky's... no rational thought has been shown yet... They now adding players to build a team to get back in the prem. But before they sold off, drove out, or refused to play them, we had a prem league team.. Mid table when Kean took over... And to be honest I think that if the Venky's bought the worlds top 20 players, with Kean as manager, Rovers would still lose...

I'm amazed that players with other options are even considering coming to play for Kean. He must be paying them well over the odds. What happens to the deceitful charisma that must be evident to players who he has worked with in the past as opposed to what we see when when he speaks in public? Do these players appriciate that they will be playing in front of 6000 home fans. Suppose they don't care. Just look forward to the away gamesand keep on taking the money.

Why keep giving different timescales that the owners should consider then? The excuses ran out almost a year ago now.

The only man to be given a chance should be Shebby Singh and he has only a few weeks to tell us why he hasn't come out and shouted "Kean Out" from the rooftops. The only way the club can go forward is to remove this man completely. ASAP

Convince yourself all you like, I did it last year, and the year before, things ALWAYS look good. Until you watch them on the pitch, until you see slaphead Kean stood on the sideline, saying NOTHING, just stood, starring into thin air, licking his lips....

Then you realise, no matter who we sign, we've still got the most inept manager in the history of man at the helm.

It just gets worse! Why is this guy in charge? Dropping down a division was painful but at least I thought Kean would be sacked! I don't wish Rovers to drop again before Venkys make a decision.

Does Singh work for Kean or Kean for Singh? The only positive I can see is that Venky's have realised there are problems and put Singh in charge to sort them out. Singh has already gone on record saying Kean should go, so if Rovers do not perform hopefully he has the mandate to sack him.

Couldn't keep listening to Shebby on Radio Lancs. Had to switch off. What a clown! He talked about watching the Rovers last season Well some of us have watched the Rovers for nearly 60 years and in all that time have never seen such mismanagement. Even the likes of Iley, Ince and Kidd were 200% better than Kean and that is saying something.
We have been down in the depths of the divisions but had teams that at least knew what they were doing. At times last season when we needed goals he took off his best strikers. He knew our defence was weak so didn't play his best defenders. His idea of a midfield was pathetic. He threw games we should have won and finally his best idea was to go through a game with not a shot on goal.
Could I just say to Shebby, Get him out of Ewood as soon as possible and you will be an instant hit with the fans. Probably nominated for the freedom of Blackburn.

There are no rational reasons to give Kean another chance. All excuses used up. It's been a disaster and there was no fight from the team to stay up. I will never forget Spurs away with no goal attempts and Wigan at home was little better.
yes, but the reality of the situation is that kean is still the manager. so saying that all excuses have now been used up is a bit of a moot point, but i think we all agree with it in principal.
i'm sure he will argue, rightly or wrongly, that he has been hampered somewhat by the situation. for example, he may well have wanted to play salgado in some of those relegation games, but not had the option available to him. there are also the suggestions that certain players have been brought into the club that he didn't really ask for or want, although i don't think this was ever really proven.
personally, i think he has proven himself to be tactically quite poor, but i'm sure he would try and make the case none the less.

With 5000 season ticket holders, might I say 325 sold in the Darwen end,,Crowds of approx 8000 at best, then the only thing these guys are coming for is cash,,which is good as it shows the penny is slowly dropping with Venkys that they have to spend money,,however Kean has already lost them millions and they aint gonna get rid of him,,god knows what level he will take us to before they see the light and sack the useless sod.

2. Sign as many players or be linked before 10 July 2012.

4. From 11 July Sell as many big earners as possible.

5. From 11 July Steve can continue spouting.

This is on very good information,

Whats the relevance of the 10/11th July 2012 ??????
Assuming the last question is rhetoric, but if not DON'T BUY SEASON TICKETS. Especially after the 10th.

Bit better than our midfield will be next season, even with Danny "The Saviour" Murphy! You don't see Best scoring brilliant individual efforts a la Cisse.

Just a reminder of Kean and Best's time at Cov;

I know Stevie likes his stats, so I hope he reads and appreciates that research!
well Mr keanokio nothing changes do,s it worst season in 45 years ,but at least your consistant BLESS.

Why couldn't he play Salgado? Ok the Venky's may have had to pay him a few grand more, but wouldn't it have been worth it to save the millions they have lost by benig relegated? False economy to me.

There are no rational reasons to give Kean another chance. All excuses used up. It's been a disaster and there was no fight from the team to stay up. I will never forget Spurs away with no goal attempts and Wigan at home was little better.
what other choice is there(rationally as you say), and i never said give him another chance but i think the venky's have
Why keep giving different timescales that the owners should consider then? The excuses ran out almost a year ago now.

The only man to be given a chance should be Shebby Singh and he has only a few weeks to tell us why he hasn't come out and shouted "Kean Out" from the rooftops. The only way the club can go forward is to remove this man completely. ASAP
did you say give shaby a chance you obviously didnt hear him on radio lancs last night getting a right mauling from GRAHAM LIVER who may i say sometimes works on the station but that didnt stop him from asking proper questions are you looking ANDY CRYER ,ho and by the way shaby did say kean should be sacked just a month ago but of course that was befor venkys employed him as a CLOWN

Haven`t been on the site for some time and haven`t been to Ewood since before christmas, for obvious reasons but felt I needed to share my thoughts that what we are watching is farce of the highest order.

Fer nigh on three score years `ave been a Rover’s supporter
Over the years, some tears, joy, and friendship, they brought
Yet few wor the times that I felt despair
Until a certain person was ensconced there.

He's ta'en our life's troubles and doubled em,
-He's lied to everyone and yet the media were dumb
No joy could we find in even a win at United
He’d be so steeped in lies that we felt blighted.

His claim wor that he would bring us football of the highest order
Rovers would be feasting with fans from every European border
But Rovers fans knew from the start
He lack any of the qualities required especially a heart.

An' them that know him, I ask you Shabby, tek heed,
fer he will bring you down, it is part of his creed.
But ah'm gradely fain that now I know
That it is not a tragic play but a comedy show.

When I lived in Singapore for six months in 2006 I used to watch Premier League Football on Star Sports...with their "expert" pundit Shebby Singh.

I can tell you for a fact that (back then at least) he knew less than your average man in the pub about English football! I hope he's done PLENTY of research since then (but somehow I doubt he has).

As for Murphy, let's give him a chance...what he may have lost in pace he more than makes up for in footballing brains. My Fulham supporting friends are gutted he's left them.

Kean Out. COYB.

He wouldn't be allowed to ask those questions on Radio Rovers, its obvious awkward questions are censored.

I stopped listening to Radio Rovers last season as I couldn't bear to listen to the loaded questions to Kean before and after every game, I prefer to listen to a radio station with a balanced view.

Sounds like Best is already in the bag.

Singh can't fire Kean and he can't recommend his dismissal until he's been under his management and failed. It's like any other job you take on, you can't walk in and fire those you perceived to have done a bad job without giving them a chance to prove whether it was external affluences that caused the bad performance or their own incompetence.

We need to settle down a bit and let the season start. If after a few games, he is still failing, Shebby will start feeling the pressure and we will see whether he's really "in charge" or not. It is unfair to cast judgement on him as an employee/manager whose just started the job.

Graham Liver did a good job to make him nervous about answering, but the ONE question that needed asking that nobody has the guts to answer is:

"Is Steve Kean Unsackable?"

I would have asked him: "You have said everyone has a clean slate, but everyone is on trial.

If Steve Kean fails to perform this season, will you recommend his dismissal, or is he as some are suggesting, unsackable?"

I think it is difficult for any Rovers fan to comment about the Championship standards as it is a long time since we saw them

I think Best would be a good signing but I get the feeling he will go to Norwich if they sell Holt .

Big question - if we sign him who will put the ball on his head ?

"Even the likes of Iley, Ince and Kidd were 200% better than Kean and that is saying something" notice all these Managers are 4 letter words !

Just listening to that interview between Singh and Liver, it appears that possibly the questions were not loaded, maybe shebby told Liver it was an open interview and that he could ask anything, but when he realised what he had done, and reality set in that it was going to be as easy as commentating, he was on the back foot, I suppose that won't happen again, a bit cocky if you ask me, cut out of the same mould as Kean. The think about talking about fottball with kean and the those ppl at the hotel is quite dangerous in the fact that everyone has opinions but only those who have experience sucess and can see how sucess can be achieved should be the only one asked, i.e. not kean (he has never suceeded at anything) or possibly the hotel staff either, to really its the blind leading the blind!

Well! 4 letter words....that will cut Kean's replacement down, only those with 5 or more to be eligible. Seem like a plan. Let's make a list.

We have NOT signed Best yet, remember last year, Beckham Ronaldo, and even if he is fool enough to sign we all need to keep an eye on the exit door at Ewood, no player under contract will be allowed to leave until the ST early bird has finished, THEN watch them all go,

Yak and Hoilett we know about,

Nzonzi, Olson,Robinson, Givet,and Dann(hopefully) Rochina, and Formica

What are we left with, all the bench warmers form last season like Goodwillie and Robiro? and the invisible one on a long contract (MA)

Thats when all the fans who have bought ST will realise again the have been hoodwincked.

Never mind see you all at Accy Stanley (shouting Kean out)and Ipswich (shouting Kean out) and hopefully not long before we are back at Ewood when and only when this clown has been sacked, NOT before!!!

Kean Out

democracy? - Its a private company and the "democracy" is in their boardroom!

Debate? - do you have a debate with the owners of your local cinema? Do you harang them because the manager isn't playing the films you want? Do you organise marches and demonstrations because you don't like the popcorn?

God Midas where did that come from, I take your point that it's "there" company, but they are running a business and we the fans are the customers, and if the product is rubbish we won't buy it or watch it and that is where we are at at the moment, the owners are doing what they think is right and the customers are leaving in there drives, next stop because the owners are so arrogant and won't listen to any one except a bunch of liars that's in the inner circle will nO doubt be another relegation battle, as we all know the Problem is mainly Kean and until he is removed we have this Mexican stand of between the owners and the fans, who will win remains to be seen but at least they don't have my money to waist as I am staying away from Ewood until this lot get it sorted!

Moral Integrity and Fortitude

Our club has been attacked by an incompetent individual, and management consortium to which no apology or sign of remorse for their actions has been forthcoming

We should not grace them with our presence until they have done the decent thing and acknowledged the fact and dismissed the key person for our demise.

Only then would the process of reconciliation begin.

Moral fortitude is required in these testing of times.

Don't relent even under the temptations that they are obviously going to try to pass our way.

To actually show the qualities required has proven beyond them and I include certain players of responsibility within the club as well.

Why couldn't he play Salgado? Ok the Venky's may have had to pay him a few grand more, but wouldn't it have been worth it to save the millions they have lost by benig relegated? False economy to me.
my point being it may not have been his choice. pure speculation, of course, but these boards are full of that

Like that. No apology or remorse for where they have put us.
.
I support your sentiments.

I think Kean has got it right for once getting Murphy and Best we just require the defence to be shored up and another stiker and we are in a position to challenge.
Sacking Kean after these purchases will ensure we are promoted so come on desai tell shabby to get rid.

100% correct ,, but it wont happen Kean is loved by Venkys, hated by the Fans.. but they own the club and in India they rule by force not democracy or debate,, we will loose 2 - 0
democracy? - Its a private company and the "democracy" is in their boardroom!
.
Debate? - do you have a debate with the owners of your local cinema? Do you harang them because the manager isn't playing the films you want? Do you organise marches and demonstrations because you don't like the popcorn?
.
You are a customer.
If he didn't play the films i wanted , I'd go somewhere else....
Customer's always right

ed at the news we're going to sign this brilliant forward. First Murphy, now Gomes, and here's hoping we get Leon Best as well. All we need to do is get Colin Hendry back into the fold and this club will start to motor up that table and get promoted.
.????.???? The Mighty Weetabix....to paraphrase...WHO IS SHE? WHO IS SHE? What a plant! Kean must be getting desperate to find someone with the brain the size of a peanut. Nobody in their right mind can put positive spin on anything this shower do. Any player that joins this circus is just looking for a pay off.
