Turf Moor skipper McCann a Welsh target

BURNLEY captain Chris McCann is a target for Swansea City, the Lancashire Telegraph understands.

The South Wales club are looking to strengthen all areas as they prepare for a second season in the Premier League, after manager Brendan Rodgers last week turned down the opportunity to hold talks with Liverpool about the vacant manager's job at Anfield.

And they have highlighted midfielder McCann, right, as a player who would fit a footballing philosophy that drew admirers in only the club’s third ever spell in the top flight, and first since 1983.

Burnley have activated a clause in the 24-year-old's contract to see it through to next summer, following an injury-free campaign.

After barely playing in the Clarets' Premier League season and having their return to the Championship largely written off in 2010/11 by a succession of serious knee problems and a health scare, McCann confirmed a complete recovery by being an ever present in the league last season.

Now the 24-year-old Dubliner – a product of the Turf Moor youth system – could be being lined up for a move for the first time in his career after being monitored by the Swans.

Rodgers has made Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson a prime target on the strength of last season's loan spell, in which he scored seven goals in 17 appearances.

A bid was turned down earlier this month by parent club Hoffenheim, who are believed have valued the former Reading midfielder at around £8.2million.

The 22-year-old, who has told the German club he wants to quit the Bundesliga for a prolonged stay in the Premier League, has also been watched by Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United.

But even if Swansea were successful in securing Sigurdsson's signature, Rodgers still expects to have funds to spare to build on his squad, after being offered assurances by chairman Huw Jenkins that he will be backed in the market.

“We'll have money it's about where that money goes - whether it be on one player and a few other signings or if it goes on three or four players,” said the Swansea boss, who I understand would be looking at a £2million spend to secure McCann.

“The most important thing is identifying the right types and if they are available it will give us a great chance.

“I really think from a player's perspective this has got to be a real attractive place to play football.

“Players will get well paid here and they will come to a club that's growing all the time, where success is a philosophy and players like to play our way.

“It's an attractive club it's just getting the right players for the right money.

“I've got no doubt the club will do everything they possibly can to help me get the players I want.”
