Kilby: New chairman must be part of the Clarets’ ‘social fabric’

BARRY Kilby believes the next chairman of Burnley Football Club will be a natural successor.

The 63-year-old is set to step down from a role he has held for 13 years in May, after revealing he is battling cancer.

He has confirmed, however, he will retain his shares and remain on the board. And he feels the new chairman will be picked from one of the club’s other four directors.

Operational director Brendan Flood, Clive Holt, Mike Garlick and newest director John Banaszkiewicz are like Kilby all Burnley fans, and are all options to succeed Kilby.

And he feels that is a tradition that should be maintained at Turf Moor.

“I prefer clubs that are run by people who are part of the social fabric of the club. Not people who have to look on a map and find out what they’re buying,” said Kilby, who has overseen two promotions, four managerial appointments and one season in the Premier League.

“We’re all Burnley fans. The club is in our DNA, if you like.

“We’re a tight group.

“Out of the four (other directors) I would presume that a new chairman will be elected.

“I think it will come from within. It’s not like a chief executive. The directors represent the share-holders, the shareholders elect the directors and the directors elect the chairman. It’s not a club like Preston where there is one big dominant shareholder that says ‘this is the chairman’. It has to go through those democratic processes. There’s nobody absolutely dominant that can say this, that or the other.”

And Kilby is hopeful the club can continue the progress it has made over his 13-year stewardship.

“I think we can. I hope so, yes,” he said.

“It’s got a good board of directors and I think we’re in good shape as well.

“I’d like to think we can progress next season.”

Asked if he felt he would still have a role to play, Kilby added: “I certainly hope so, obviously I’ll have to see how the health goes, but I’ll still be a director and I hope I can contribute to the wellbeing of this club.

“It’s been a big thing in my life, obviously, and enjoyable in the main.

“There have been ups and downs, the adrenaline - it’s a big thing to say ‘we’ve got to step down from this’.

“It’s purely a duty thing and time. I’ve realised that I can’t carry on doing it.

“I’ll step down at the end of May as chairman but I’ll still be a director of the club.

“I hope (the input) is valued. I’ll play as big a part as I’m asked to and can.”

We have got to be very, very careful what happens post-May.

The new chairman needs to be a Burnley fan and have the best interests of the club very close to his heart.

There were a lot of people who said he should have spent more money to keep us up. However, the premiership is not the be all and end all and Mr. Kilby realized this.

It was disappointing to go down but we're now in a better position than then. The team is young and exciting, the manager is fantastic and there is genuine optimism around the club and the town.

Let us not make the mistake of believing ourselves to be bigger than we are and overreaching like some of our supposedly "bigger" neighbours who, when they are relegated, are going to wish they had had a chairman like Barry Kilby.

BURNLEY Youth beat Premier League WBA 2-1 away to progress to the last 8 of the FA Youth Cup.

Your atrocious rag is clearly unaware that the game took place unlike Wovers game v Stoke which you reported in detail.

Well said, gudari. As one who remembers the Bob Lord days and the way we felt as our better players were sold I now appreciate that with the following we have, however committed they undoubtedly are, we do not have the resources to match the wealthier clubs and will always be a selling club whichever division we are playing in. Any chairman with the interests of the club at heart will have a difficult task of balancing player sales with league position and whoever takes the job will need both the support and the prayers of the fans.
Thanks Mr. Kilby for a splendid job and please try to ensure that your successor is as committed.

You say we are predominantly a selling club, and we are, but I firmly believe that this does not preclude us from enjoying a prolonged stay in the Premier League. There are a number of clubs of similar size, support and traditions as Burnley who are currently in the top flight; Stoke, Bolton, Wigan, QPR, Fulham, Swansea, Norwich and some other club nearby whose name escapes me. Just because we balance the books doesn't mean we can't harbour ambitions to re-establish ourselves in the top tier.

A big WAVE to all my Burnley CHICOMANICS!

I'll be back soon to get you all bouncing in the isles at Turf Moor, my last visit was a SMASH HIT, and the nice Mr Flood is putting together another EXTRAVAGANZA to get you rocking again!

I'm headlining (naturally) but so far he's also booked the creme de creme of the Claret A list!

There's that bloke off the Safestyle UK adverts, that chav bint who ran the Raoul Moat Facebook page ('eeeeees a ledge-und in ower family) and that Big Issue seller who sings 'Big big big issue' to the tune of Jingle Bells at Christmas.

There are more TOP acts to be confirmed, so stayed tuned for more Chico updates!

On a separate note, while I was at Gawthorpe yesterday, that nice Mr Howe was showing me some stretches, and he offered to show me one called a 'reacharound'.

I declined as I was already a bit tired, but can anyone tell me what he meant?

Take care my Claret SUPERFANS, and I really do mean, take care!

Along with Gudari's comments (and in the absence of Vintage and one or two others), sensible and reasoned comment.

Would that be Stoke CIty and Norwich City who both average over 25,000 home support? (to our 13,000) or Wigan and Fulham both subsidised by multi millionaire chairman on a vanity trip? or Bolton who are £100m in debt?
Perhaps the only club that is remotely comparable is Swansea and I think there is a good arguement to say that they have the potential to be much bigger that we can be!

Exactly what I thought, don't find myself agreeing with to much being said by bfc fans.
Nice to hear someone putting there brain into action, before putting there mouth into gear.

Putting football banter to one side, I wish mr kilby all the best in his fight against cancer.
