Sligo keen for quick decision from Accrington Stanley

SLIGO Rovers are hoping for a quick decision from Accrington Stanley over their interest in Paul Cook – but the Reds remain keen to take their time before choosing a new boss.

Stanley requested permission to speak to current Sligo boss Cook late last week after contact was made between the two clubs, but they are in no rush to make a decision over whether they want to appoint the 44-year-old.

The Reds still regard Cook as a back-up option after telling caretaker manager Leam Richardson that the job will be his if he continues to impress in temporary charge.

Stanley do not want to make any decisions before Saturday’s home match against Oxford, and may indeed opt to give Richardson further games after that to prove himself, even if Sligo are keen for a swift resolution to the situation.

Cook returned to his native Liverpool at the weekend after news of Accrington’s request became public, with the decision made that it would be difficult for him to attend Sligo’s pre-season friendly against Galway on Saturday.

Sligo’s 2012 season starts on March 2 and the Irish club want to know if Cook will be leaving in case they need to make plans for a replacement ahead of their first match of the campaign.

You've got to understand Sligo's point of view here really, if their in pre-season they'll be wanting any speculation over their manager's future resolved as quickly as possible. Which is a disappointment really, because it sounds like this could be the end of our interest in Cook if it becomes a matter of Sligo proposing a deadline for a deal being made; which they probably will. In my humble opinion he is one of the stronger candidates whose application has become public knowledge, in fact for me he would be the beast appointment we could make.

However given the current situation it's only fair now to give Richardson a crack at securing the job full-time and it seems that this is the option the board are most likely to want to pursue. I just hope the motive isn't to save any Coleman and Proctor cash towards a new stadium...

I cant see Stanley stumping up in the region of £30k in compensation even if they have received compo from Rochdale and the sale of Proccy. Its only 3 months ago a number of staff where made redundant and others on substantially reduced hours. My feeling is they will give it to Leam until the end of the season and decide on a permanent manager then.

Can understand where Sligo are coming from but the last thing Stanley need is to be rushed into this decision & I hope they don't bow to any pressure they may be put under - the main thing our lads need right now ia consistency & even though I think Cooky may be an option, it is a while since he was at Stanley & we weren't playing the style we are now back then.
My vote would be for Leam to carry on till at least the end of the season & if that means we have to end our interest in any of the applicants, so be it
