Greeks fall short of Formica asking price as Flamengo join the race
9:29am Tuesday 24th January 2012 in Football
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers are asking for at least £3.5million for Argentine playmaker Mauro Formica – with Olympiakos’ attempts to get the 23-year-old on the cheap set for failure.
The Greek giants are understood to be ready to pay Rovers £2.5million for him in the summer, first taking him on loan until the end of the season.
Brazilian outfit Flamengo also yesterday joined the race for the in-demand Formica and are ready to attempt to sign him permanently now.
It is believed that Olympiakos want to pay Rovers £400,000 now as a loan fee for Formica.
It is also understood that Rovers wanted it in writing that Olympiakos would make it a permanent switch in the summer should the club suffer Premier League relegation.
Sources close to Olympiakos have confirmed negotiations have started between the clubs but Formica would only be allowed to speak to them once a deal in principle was agreed.
Formica arrived at Ewood Park from Argentinian club Newell’s Old Boys for £3.5m in January 2011 and, after a slow start, has established himself as a regular in the first team squad.
The player has made more appearances than anyone else in Rovers’ squad this season but, with Steve Kean’s transfer budget severely limited this month, Formica’s sale could provide more scope for adding significant signings.
Rovers boss Kean would be reluctant to allow any of his current squad depart Ewood Park this month as he continues his attempts to add a midfielder and full back before the transfer window shuts.
Formica was reported by media in Argentina last month as stating his desire to quit Ewood Park and return home to be closer to one of his daughters.
A move to Greece would not help with that but, with his brother Lautaro playing in the Greek Superleague at Asteras Tripolis, sources close to Formica have indicated he would be interested in the move.
Rovers though would demand getting their money back having seen the player grow in confidence in the Premier League over the past few months.
He has spent the last couple of games on the substitutes bench but, scoring in a second half cameo against Fulham, has proved a valuable squad member.
It is understood Olympiakos were still some way off meeting Rovers’ demands last night as the midfielder’s future continues to hang in the balance.
Rovers will continue their attempts this week to bolster their squad ahead of the closing of the transfer window next Tuesday, with a centre midfielder and a right back a priority.
Venky’s Brazilian fixer Joao Souza will be in England until the transfer window closes to help efforts to strengthen, although linked midfielder Richarlyson, from Atletico Mineiro, is unlikely to sign.

Don't sell Formica, he's one of the few good, deserving members of our squad. If he continues to develop he could be in our midfield for years. Great technical ability and finally starting to adjust to the Prem.

Here's this happy camp we're always being told about! The "family club" as Dunny agrees we used to be.
I wonder who the agent would be, should Formica move for the second time in just over 12 months...?
As Russ says we'd be better off getting rid of Roberts, Grella, Goulon etc.
And as for wanting to be near his brother - remember when we signed Julio Santa Cruz to persuade Roque to stay? Could try that again? Oh no wait...

Seems barmy to me that we (supposedly) paid £3.5m for him (and no doubt some lovely juicy agent's fee) and now we are looking to get rid of him for £3.5m.
.
So, we bought a player with potential for £3.5m and slowly he has developed into a half decent player and regular in the team and now he is worth what we bought him for twelve months earlier.....summat don't add up....no doubt summat to do with player ownership/registrati

all things considered, it's probably the case that both sets of fans have a point, but should perhaps temper their protest with a bit of realism. whilst the press should try not to cause such a deliberate stir. then again, that doesn't sell newspapers, does it.
not wanting to get all philosophical about it, but it's all becomming a bit of a pantomime nowadays. :)

"They're not real fans"
"How dare they 'abuse' their manager that way" (er, abuse? 'Kean out')
"They should support the team and the manager. Who knows what may happen if they get behind him?"
" fans are the worst in football"
"I've never in all my life seen such abuse of a manager"
"What do want exactly? Do they expect to win the league? Lolz!"
"I hope that succeeds now and shoves it in the faces of all the fans who have never supported him".
Have I missed any?
Oh, wait. None of this will apply to the Arsenal fans I guess? Silly me. I should have remembered, all the scousers got a free pass to. For their GENUINELY out of order Roy Hodgson abuse after THREE GAMES.
Yep. "You'll Never Walk Alone.."

But hey, us Rovers fans are the worst fans in football right. "Kean out". I mean, wow, who ever criticises a manager for 5 wins in 31 (or whatever the terrible record was at the time).

I'm not sure that the Venkys are taking loads from the club, but neither are they providing investment. The Indian article points to folk who do not understand English football, who came up with a business model which has so far not worked and who now are doing nothing because they don't know what else to do.
The best plan at present seems to be hoping that no offers come in for the team players and then carrying on in Feb with what we've got.

If we're selling him for the same price as we bought him, less then a season after, then it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out someone's making a few bob out of this.
And where is Kean's "not for sale" statement? He clearly rates Formica as he's our most featured player this season. All very very suspicious IMO.

Really? For legal purposes I won't call it a lie, I'll just say he was misconceived.
The club are desperately trying, but unlikely, to get back the £3.5 million they paid for him
- to say nothing of the agent's fee.
Well, Mr Anderson, perhaps you can get ‘considerably more’ for Formica – and repay the fat fee that Venkys thought ‘was normal’.
Having said that, Formica has adjusted to the Premier League and is now an asset to the squad. He covers an incredible amount of ground, doubles up in defence, links play – and scores goals.
I, too, am astonished he is for sale and the club are devaluing him by haggling at £2.5million. He should not be for sale – full stop. But certainly nowhere near that price.

This is madness, plain and simple. We supposedly bought Formica for "the future." He has been "groomed" for a year. He has been one of Rovers most consistent and regular players this season. He has adapted to the Premiership. And we are now planning to sell him FOR THE SAME AMOUNT we paid for him? Then what? Replace him with an untried and untested Brazilian who will take time to settle and adapt to British football. And all in a relegation season? And Kean is going along with this? So Formica wants to leave the club? So does Samba? And we are forcing him to honor his contract? Nothing makes sense at Ewood any more. The lunatics are clearly running the asylum.
Venkys never in it to spend money.
Taken advice on how to run a club on the cheap.
Got global exposure for their (core) brand on the cheap.
Players, like bank notes are pretty much worthless (to owners and agents) until they move.
Formica is wanted, so him moving makes money (especially for the agent).
On the blocks: Samba.
Grella, Roberts, Rabeiro, Anderson etc. are not. So no money to be made there.
To dispatch would mean paying off, but that means spending money, so its a no-no.

Whats wrong with letting Formica go? We need to strengthen in other areas and raise cash to do so. So who do we sell? Samba? no Hoillet? no Formica? why not? Not many of our players are wanted by other clubs. As for people going on about getting rid of Grella, Roberts and that, who would take them off our hands??
a) He has very good technical ability (see his goal against Fulham) and has recently started to show some real promise as a PL regular. He's already our most used player this season.
b) He will only get better and is "one for the future" as Kean likes to say. He could potentially be in our midfield for years to come.
and c) why would our sodding asking price be £3.5m? So after paying all of the agents fees to get him we're going to let him go for the SAME price? That's just plain idiotic.
If we're going to sell him at essentially a LOSS after only playing 20ish games for the club. What's the bleeding point of buying him in the first place?
Overall though I just like the lad, and think on a pure football level it's a mistake to let him go when our Premier League lives are at stake. Who we going to replace him with for £3.5m who's any better?

Formica is not a player to them, he is a commodity who will be bought and sold without any thought about how that affects Rovers as a team.
Venkys blundered into an ill advised venture, as someone notes above, IF footie is to take off in India, a shrewd business person there would buy into United, Liverpool, Spurs etc.
It's clear Venkys have learnt the lesson and are pulling out, presumably asset-stripping was always a backstop to get the cash back and that's what they are doing. It could still all go belly up with acute cash flow crises which lead to bankruptcy.
As to Harry, he may be affable and a good manager, but he's still ugly face of this quick fix, easy money attitude which is ruining football in this country.

So what do we do next? We sell him for what we paid for him!
Make no mistake under our sad and pathetic under resourced owners every single player is for sale. The only reason that Samba is still here is that he **** of Mrs The great I am by daring to put in a transfer request, just like we as fans have **** her off by questioning her choice of Steve Kean as Manager, after all she does know much more about the game than any of us!!

How can any true fans look at what has not happened in this transfer window linked in with kean looking to accept bids for formica without feeling a raging anger that these muppets are killing the club. If the economic times of india are correct, venkys do not use a board of directors, just a general manager who liases directly with insanity head office in india. That being the case kean must be in favour of letting formica go if the right price comes along, we are possibly only keeping samba because outside bids were 'too low'. Where are the much needed players that kean said we were going to get in order to assure premiership survival, he said he was going to play his cards close to his chest.. all he has managed to achieve is developing a resemblance to mr bun the baker. God help the Rovers, because kean and the venkys won't

We need to concentrate not only on putting pressure on Venkys to get out, but also providing them with an option - and that is where the Blackburn Football Charitable Investment Fund comes in!
Momentum is growing fast for this initiative - read the latest developments!!!!

Of course there is no money....and we are not (of course) going to see all those experienced "bodies" ("player,s" to you average Manager/Coach) Kean as spoken about, arriving early January.
Now selling Formica !! (the brightest light of all the players brought into the club during the Venky saga).
Plus they continue not to speak out about their future involvement with the club....amazing, the saga becomes more silly by the week..a comic opera indeed !!!

There is a basic mistake in how some of the well-meaning but naive fellow fans on here look at what is going on at Rovers. Seen from a footie perspective none of their dealings make sense, but Venkys and Anderson are not interested in Rovers as a football club, they are interested in Rovers as a business opportunity. For Anderson it's win-win, the more transfers, deals the more fees he gets. Rovers are a gold mine for the spivs.

You have to detatch yourself from the 'supporter mentality' and look at it as a business. Likewise, players are employees (in their minds) and commodities (in Venkys).
Once you do that, it starts to make some sense. It may not be pallitable, to the supporter, but thats reality.
As for Andersons involvement - he's an agent........end of!
