Town extended their unbeaten run to six matches but were left ruing the string of chances they missed in Tuesday’s game.
They dominated the second half with their slick passing play but despite creating a host of chances they could only score once.
Manager Ben Hall said: “We were excellent, particularly in the second half when some of the passing and moving was of the highest quality.
“We created 11 chances and converted one which is obviously why we didn’t travel home with a maximum return.’’ Town welcomed back Shaun Clough and Stewart Airdrie into the starting line-up and should have gone ahead after 35 seconds when a great cross picked out Spencer Jordan who put his header wide of the goal.
Squires Gate took the lead after nine minutes when a long ball caught the Town defence napping and Scott Harries came in at the far post to tuck the ball under Billy Carrington’s body to score.
Town kept plugging away for the equaliser, Airdrie fired a fierce shot straight at the keeper from just outside the area, then a mix up in the Gate defence led to Airdrie pulling the ball back from on the goal line to Robbie Smith who blazed his shot over the bar.
Town were dealt a blow when Airdrie suffered a reoccurrence of the hamstring injury and he was immediately replaced by Paul Barrett.
Town started to pile the pressure as they searched for the equaliser. Smith played the ball square to Jack Overson who was now beginning to get forward more, his shot from 25 yards was tipped over the bar by Beesley.
From the resulting corner the ball ended up at the feet of Smith on the right side of the penalty area.
He curled his shot over the defence but it hit the bar and rebounding to safety. A minute later Smith had his reward.
The ball was half cleared just outside the Gate penalty area and he made no mistake, cracking a great shot into the back of the net giving Beesley no chance.
