SAM Allardyce believes El-Hadji Diouf is getting better with age – but admits the controversial winger needed Rovers’ young guns to get him back on the Premier League track.
The Senegalese international has been one of Rovers’ shining lights at the start of this campaign, following an impressive pre-season, with Allardyce putting his new lease of life down to him ‘feeling the pressure’.
Diouf looks set to continue his budding partnership with compatriot and namesake Mame Biram Diouf at Manchester City on Saturday, either side of lone striker Nikola Kalinic, as Rovers bid to shock the Premier League’s big spenders.
He has been a regular in Allardyce’s side for the majority since being reunited with his former Bolton boss in January 2009 but ‘Big Sam’ claims a spell out of the side might have been the spark he needed.
After a bright start to life at Ewood Park, Diouf started to have less of an impact but, after being dropped for a period last season, he has responded to the challenge of Rovers’ emerging youth in style.
“I think he has been here a long time now and perhaps he got a little bit cushy thinking his place was safe,” said Allardyce.
“Then though lots of young lads started playing really well and put everybody at senior level under a lot of pressure, that is where we hold our biggest hope again this year in terms of improvement.
“We have to hope our younger players keep getting better and the older players have to kick on because transfer wise we are very limited indeed. We showed that by signing two players one on loan and one on a free.”
Diouf arrived in the Premier League back in 2002 when Liverpool signed him from Lens for £10m but he failed to live up to expectations, scoring just six goals in 80 appearances.
He then became a crowd favourite during a four-year spell under Allardyce at Bolton, but the Rovers boss believes some of his play has developed since then.
“He has stepped up his quality of play,” said Allardyce.
“It comes more regularly and more often. You could see by the strength of the player how he has developed over the past few years.
“He has always had the ability to beat a player but he has got a little bit quicker now.
"Now he has added that speed as you saw for our goal against Arsenal.
“He accepted a really good pass from Chris Samba and used his strength and ability and pace to get past the defender and pick his head up to provide a ball for Mame to score.”

I've been supporting the Rovers since 1975, I remember climbing through the turnstyle bars in the old Blackburn end for free, sure it was 75p to get at that time, in if my mind serves me right, and 10p for a programme. I have 2 kids and got season tickets for both of them until we moved to Canada in 2005. Guess Rovers were just not for them even though I tried my best. The girl supports Newcastle and my son Man Utd, as for me always the Rovers.

Probably spent more money Following the Rovers than you dream about. From attending all the away games in the old 3rd division on the G.P.O coach in the late 70s/80s (remember them days) Admittedly it was free at home in those days sneaking inbetween the turnstyle bars in the Blackburn end, or climbing the fence at the corner of the old riverside near the Darwen end. Eventually got paper rounds delivering to Paul Bradshaw (Leyburn Rd), Don Martin (Just off Brookway) and Paul Round (Brookway) so started paying the 30p child admission, how times have changed. Went to Trelleborg on a coach for our 1st European adventure that was great fun, even though we lost to part timers. Also held away season tickets via the away travel club until 2004-2005 season. Missed 3 games that I can remember at home since god knows when, due to being in hospital (Deby county) and both my children born on matchdays (Plymouth and Oldham) see even remember them. People move away from Blackburn and the UK for reasons, and mine was to make a better life for my Children. Do I still love Blackburn and the area? you bet I do, born there, raised there and will be burried there one day. Traitor no!!! should see my home it's a shrine to Blacburn, Darwen and Blackburn Rovers.

Oh and makaveli96....We got burgled 3 times, had my car stolen in Blackpool. Had my car windows smashed in the highercroft area to get my CD player and CD'S twice, both whilst watching the Rovers. All this hurt for drugs, so maybe people have had enough of the Crime, are they traitor's? Fair enough it's not just in the UK, but living here in the countryside we feel safe enough to leave the doors open and property outside like it used to be there, 5 Years so far and nothing touched.

Makaveli, you realise not one of the Rovers players live in Blackburn? There is a big difference between loving the club you have grown up supporting and loving the town you have grown up in! Also, if only people from the town were to support the club, the attendance would be even more pathetic!
