Blackburn Rovers defender: We all need to help out strikers

CHRIS Samba insists the burden of easing Blackburn Rovers’ fire power woes lies on the whole squad’s shoulders – rather than expecting the strikers to carry the full weight of responsibility.

All the talk this summer has been on Sam Allardyce’s efforts to add to his strike force ahead of the new campaign and, while accepting a new face would be beneficial, Samba believes they all have a part to play.

The search for a striker back home continues with a second bid believed to have been submitted for their number one target.

Rovers are understood to have an initial bid rejected for their target, but negotiations are continuing as Blackburn refuse to give up on their man, whose identity they are keeping secret for fear of scuppering the move.

In Australia, Rovers’ 18-year-old defender Phil Jones headed home his first senior goal in Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to AEK Athens in the Sydney Festival of Football as their summer preparations continued.

It was only their second goal in their last four pre-season matches, including successive defeats in Australia, and with only two wins against non league opposition to their name so far, concerns are growing among the Rovers faithful.

The presence of just two senior strikers in Allardyce’s ranks at the moment, the injured Nikola Kalinic and Jason Roberts, is doing little to ease any worries but Samba believes everyone can help to solve their apparent goal shyness.

Samba said: “Last season I think the defence should be quite happy with what we achieved.

"Between myself, Gael Givet, Ryan Nelsen and Martin Olsson, I think we got more than 10. That is a good thing.

“We have to keep improving though. I had a couple of big misses as well so I can improve on that.

"We have to look up and put the ball in the back of the net.

“It is a good feeling to score goals and helping the team to win games should be enough motivation. We can all do better in front of goal.

"The forwards help us defensively and we need to help them going forward.”

Samba has improved his own goal tally each season so far at Rovers, finishing last campaign with four, while defensive partner Ryan Nelsen matched his exploits last time around.

Samba believes though there are still improvements to be head, claiming the midfielders and defenders need to up their own tallies for the new campaign.

“The best thing is if the defenders and midfielders score goals and the strikers score even more,” he said.

“I think if we all scored one or two goals more we would climb a couple of positions in the table.

“Every time you go on the pitch you think you can do something more, more goals, more clearances.

"It is important you remember the year before and how we had a difficult start and we will look to correct this.

“We know our strikers work very hard for the team and we work very hard for them.

"Sometimes the way we play means it is important we score from other positions.

"David Dunn showed that last season and we all have to do what we can.”

We can only hope!

I do hope yes. However I have never seen him play, so once again my logic is ridiculous. . . . think its more of a case of not wanting to sign the other dross we have been linked with and the fact that he is Croatian so he can 'bond' well with Kalanic.

I reckon the big man fancies another stint up front myself ;-)

I dunno about you mate but I loved it when Christophe went upfront. I was dying for him to score and I went to West brom last home game of the season (Tugays farewell) and Samba nearly scored a scorcher!

I agree, he always looks dangerous and likes a shot whenever possible. What about the screamer at Spurs away a few seasons ago!
Well he's an option anyway, shame he hasn't a brother so we could have one at each end!

Samba's screamer against the spuds a few years back was one of my favourite ever Rovers goals. Absolutely loathe that lot so to beat them in the 94th minute with Christophe scoring a goal like that was fookin awesome!!!

why the hell would we want JO!!! have you lot gone nuts - would rather have donkey heskey than that load of turd JO, 2 seasons in prem, 1 with city and 1 with everton, not got 2 goals to string together - 1 word......cr@p and wouldnt be born again at rovers either. Jelavic all the way for me

Are you mental? Jo didn't cost 11 million for nothing and his goal scoring record before city was unreal. He's only 23 and one good season with us could mean selling him on for another sizeable fee just as we did with Bentley and Santa Cruz. Not cutting it at City don't say much because Robinho couldn't and despite what people say he is still class. But you'd rather have Heskey.... 32 years old, scored less goals than Jo in the past 3 seasons and will retire at the end of his contract so... no return for our money. You're mental.

Some of us oldies can remember Fred Pickering who started out in a defensive role and then became quite a useful centre forward scoring lots of goals in the 1960's but later being transferred to Everton as BRFC were becoming strapped for cash maybe history can repeat itself with Jones or Samba ???? - so long as they don't have to get transferred for the same reasons.

silly talk of putting Samba back up front, he's a big lump and good but only in a severe emergency.
we will sign Jo in the next few days, appar a bid of 1million was rejected and we have gone back with another one

Apparently the striker we have bid for is Jelavic according to various football websites, Blackburn Rovers & Glasgow Rangers have both had bids rejected and both clubs are battling it out for the Croatian striker.

was a sarcy comment - meaning that i dont rate JO in the prem, some players just dont cut it, i.e. shevchenko, edgar david etc.

world class players but not in prem

Is Fred Pickering still alive and working out? If so, might be worth a gamble on a pay-per-play deal.

Jo is still young enough to make it. The pressure on players to perform immediately at big-spending teams like Chelsea and City means there is no time for a player to bed in to a new culture or team. At Rovers, Jo could "fly under the radar" - especially if he doesn't cost much.
*
Let's face it - we are not going to get a world-class forward who is the finished article on our budget. The next decision is whether to go for someone with lots of experience (like a Heskey-type) or someone who hasn't "done it" yet, but is younger and could yet turn it around and in the future potentially make us a nice profit.
*
For me, Jo is ahead of the other rubbish mentioned so far this summer (Heskey, Beattie, Harewood, Piquionne, etc.)
*
As for the defence helping out with more goals - I think Samba and Nelsen's returns were pretty good. And whilst I admire Samba's attempts at taking heat off the strikers, at the end of the day it is their primary job to score goals. Imagine where we could have been if even just one of our forwards had got into double-figures last season?

Someone in our price range!
Newcastle United, Stoke City, and Blackburn Rovers are all interested in Bayern Munich reserve striker Deniz Yilmaz, according to reports from Germany.

In a recent interview with Bild, the 22-year old explained that he spoke with first team coach Louis van Gaal, and "he told me that it would be hard for me to get into the first team".

"I have not made any progress at Bayern. I still have a contract to 2011, but they plan to use me in the third division," he added.

"I could get a professional contract from another team."

His statements have left the Premier League trio on high alert. Previously, German side Bochum had been interested in securing the services of Yilmaz, but after being relegated they will have a difficult time matching the Premier League's allure.

Yilmaz scored 13 goals for the Bayern reserves last year, and could leave Munich for as little as €1 million (£835,000).

I expect two strikers to be signed, one we'll pay a fee for the other on loan, how good the loanee is will depend on freeing up wages i.e. getting Zurab through the door.If Grella goes for a couple of million maybe a midfielder as well.

Ive seen Samba play live a couple of time. I was amazed at his sheer physique : around 6ft 5inches and 14 stone . Given that bulk its remarkable how quick he is acroos the ground. Ive never seen a physical specimen like that in football: bit like Jonah Lomu the All Black rugby union player who burst onto the scene in the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa.
