Ewood spirit is priceless, says Blackburn Rovers defender Salgado

MICHEL Salgado insists Blackburn Rovers can defy the financial odds against Chelsea on Sunday after claiming Sam Allardyce is building ‘a spirit’ at Ewood Park that money can’t buy.

Rovers’ Spanish defender is expected to make his fifth straight Premier League start at home to the title-chasing Blues on Sunday, and the former Real Madrid man believes things are heading in the right direction.

Salgado accepts any dreams of qualifying for Europe this campaign have now disappeared from Ewood Park but, with points still needed to guarantee safety, already has his eye on qualifying for the Europa League next time round.

He said: “We are heading the right way. If we work hard, why not Europe after next season? We have tough games ahead and the most important thing is to get safe first. Two more wins probably, then we will have the confidence to get more and more.

“That can help the future. Maybe not this season for Europe because it is far away but for the next season if we play with the same squad and maybe improve –depending on the money I suppose.

“That is very important also because you have six teams who are two steps ahead of us with regards money. It is very difficult to get them but in football maybe more important than money is confidence and the team morale.

“That is very good here and so if we build on what is growing here why not surprise a few people next season and finish high up the table.”

Eyebrows were raised when the 34-year-old was brought to Ewood from Madrid earlier this season and early impressions left the home faithful far from convinced they had got the ‘right man’.

But, with another year left on his current deal, Salgado insists it is crucial to have more experienced players in a squad having left his critics eating their words in recent weeks.

He said: “I think it is very important to have the mix of youth and experience we are building. "I think we have many very good young players that are growing up and need the advice of the old players.

“They are having a great season and we have three or four ready to play in big teams. Europe is perhaps a bit much this season but why not next season?

“We are building a great team for the future. We can build the platform now. "These games coming up are important to build a team for next season. That is very important in the games that are left.”

Should be an interesting game on sunday, we have looked pretty tight at the back (at home) and Chelsea are not in the best of form with a few off-field problems as well. Just hoping they dont start to take their foot off the gas now we are almost safe because we need all the money we can get, cant see much investment coming in the summer with the club being for sale, just hope that some of the younger players that have been doing so well in the youth cup can make the step up, a new Dunn or Duffer would be nice. Champions league next year lol.

Does anyone know whos injured for Sunday, Could do with resting Dunn for the dingle trip give Basturk a go. Heard Grella's coming back but they say that at least once a month then hes out again, hope hes not on a long contract could do with getting shut, prediction 2-2

Grella, Dunn and Reid are injured. I haven't looked it up, but I don't think Ladbrokes would take the bet.

Grella should be nicknamed Okey Kokey! In Out, In Out.
.
I assume its another game with no sign of Basturk? Anybody know the story with him....will he ever play?
At least Dino Baggio got a cracker at Elland Road.

Somebody's up for a backlash after what Mourinho did to them. looks to me like a 5-1 drubbing for you lot. Then after next week at the Turf another tubbing, your going to need some spirit I'd say 90% proof.

Don't give me any stick for encroaching on your site, it's the way LET set it up when you click on football, makes it so you can't resist like the Woefuls do, on the Burnley site. :-))))) LOL

Yes but that's what proper banter is all about isn't it? Not vitriolic, fould language outbursts. But, as the saying goes "Takes one to know one!"

Speaking of going on to other fans sites, any ideas about what's happened to GAYzer? He's been very quiet lately and to be perfectly honest I miss his rants.

I & all Claret fans know the feeling about away games all too well. On your side we also have to contend with somebody in our defence, be it Carlisle, Mears, Caldwell or Jensen suddenly getting the Father Christmas feeling and I don't mean kissing the balls under the mistletoe :-((( Oops sorry - mis-spelling, now I'll have hasslem picking me up :-))))

Nelsen, Givet, Grella, Robinson, Jacobsen all out injured.

Di Santo inelegible.

Samba and who at centre back? Andrews? Jones? Move Chimbonda into the middle and shove Ollson at Left Back, Emerton Right?

I do think we can take something from the game but i'd feel a lot more comfortable with either the admiral or Givet fit.

Security word: long-blow... ooo matron.

VC, I really don't get the Jensen situation, to me he looks to be at fault for about 1 in 3 of the goals you concede. Why is it that Coyle didn't look to replace him, that could have kept you up? (serious question, banter apart...after all, you are the enemy!!)

Beats me about Jensen, he is popular with most Burnle fans so i must think I'm an exception. I've gone on long enough about a) He can't control his area b) Can handle crosses (flaps at them) c) Can't claim a ball d) Poses too long with ball, then very high long kick up field to come straight back pressurising a shaky defence. On + side he has stopped a few penalties but you expect this with a big keeper which is what must keep him as 1st choice. We took on Penny after an appeal for work permit (only been given one chance) now relegated to 3rd coice because we have Weaver. Judas & Laws preference for him baffle me especially how he has said he wishes to go to Portugal at end of season. Enemy??? Whose an enemy?? No such thing, just a supporter of an arch-rival team. Time we brought a bit of tranquility & common sense to our rivalry

Personally, im not to bothered about sunday.Realists like myself know that we just have to keep the score down it's damage limitation and defeat is inevitable. On the other hand Brum and Burnley are games we should be taking points from and six points is not beyond us.How good would it be to coming off Turf Moor sunday week not only with the 3 points but knowing we had just secured our Premiership status against our arch rivals.

Jeppo - re Jensen.
.
Tonight is Sport Relief it features Sportsmen and Women in comedy moments. Jensen has been given an hour.
.
As to why managers persist with him. First in the search for truth you have to eliminate everythnig that is impossible So,
1) Is he any good? - NO
2) Has he got any potential? - NO
3) Has he got a telepathic understanding with his defence - NO
4) Does he have the occaisional magic game - NO
5) Is he worth £millions - NO
.
So, we have got rid of the impossibles. What we have left, no matter how improbable has to be the Single Universal Truth:
.
There we have it he has managed to get hold of an incriminating DVD of Kilby and Flood with a Donkey (a bit like what happened with Freddie Shepherd on his Spanish trip). This guarantees him 1st team selection every week.
.
Duff
At least £80k per week probably £100k per week if Newcastle's Accounts are to be believed. Fulham £150m in debt will probably pay it. We won't.
Home is in Surrey.
Who says we didnt try to buy him?
Who says he wanted to come?
He is not with us - deal with it.
I am disgusted that we didnt sign Eto.

It was quoted on here previously Jeppo - I have no idea if its true - but Grabbi was on 30k+ I know that! The main point was we should have got Duffer because we knew he had qualities the current squad don't have. I would have been happy with 25 to 30 games from him but he is / will be well past that for Fulham.
.
But I take it you accept the ticket idea was well in advance of your trip - check with the LET sports editor if you want confirmation. It did include many meetings /emails etc with JW and his team. Sadly it was the 18K, 17K and 13K gates against Citeh, Wigan and Fulham that finally triggered some action. It could and should have been 5 years earlier.

should be a good game tomoz. if the crowd get behind the lads and we don't concede early we have a chance.

Seems like ages since I watched a game! Then 4 come all at once! What I did like about the spurs game was the bench -very attack minded

Morst says...
9:05am Sat 20 Mar 10

Jeppo re other page - The Truth - John Williams did not understand the BRFC fan base. He resisted any price cuts to increase gates and the result was an empty stadium with a poor atmosphere and a club facing the death knell to quote Jack Walker with a B/End ticket £400 - where would we be now with the recession etc -8 or 9 thou ST's? Instead we now have 19,200 and more walk on fans.
.
He finally realised I was right - simple as that so accept it. Ask Andy Neild or Paul Plunkett of the LET if you want independent confirmation of the meetings / emails that were swapped at the time.
.
I would not send the club bankrupt because I am an Chartered Accountant by trade and would ensure we had a business plan just as the Walker Trust do. Within that plan I would have found the money for Duffer and not Salgado. And it would have been a superb decision!!
.
Look Jeppo - the only real dispute we seem to have is you like Big Sam and I don't like his football. So lets just accept that now and leave it eh? Post our views and leave it at that?

I think Fulham was the lowest crowd that season but if I am wrong fair enough. Pretty 100% sure Citeh was 18k and Wigan 17k though for two Lancs derbies? If prices had stayed £400+ since 2007 we would have dipped down to 8 or 9K ST's but instead we have doubled it?

You saw the potential in Kalinic but Sam saw it first.
You wanted to keep lazy Benni and used the arguement because he was skillful Sam wanted him out.
You then used the ludicrous arguement that Sam wouldn't have played Dalgliesh because he liked to play his football on the ground.
You coined the term Bolton football and held it in such little regard you gave away your ticket because you couldn't watch such rubbish but continued to watch on TV.
Give us some reasoned arguement thats not based on your dislike of Sam.
